What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs?

This is one of those questions that comes up a lot:

👉 Did God create dinosaurs?
👉 And if He did — why doesn’t the Bible clearly mention them?

It can feel confusing, especially when you’re trying to line up what the Bible says with what we know about the world.

So let’s go through it simply and clearly.

👉 Yes — if God created all things, then He created dinosaurs

The Bible says:

• God created everything in heaven and on earth
• All living creatures were made by Him

That means:

👉 Dinosaurs, like every other animal, would be part of God’s creation

Why the Bible Doesn’t Mention Dinosaurs Directly

This is where people get stuck.

The Bible does not use the word “dinosaur” — but that doesn’t mean they weren’t created.

Here’s why:

1. The Bible speaks in categories, not specific species

In Genesis, it describes:

• “living creatures”
• “beasts of the earth”
• “great sea creatures”

👉 Not individual animals like we list today

Some of these categories could include creatures we now call dinosaurs

2. The Bible’s purpose is not to list every animal

The Bible is not trying to:

• catalogue every species
• explain natural history in detail

👉 Its focus is:

• God
• salvation
• humanity’s relationship with Him

That’s why it also doesn’t mention things like:

• kangaroos
• penguins
• or countless other animals

Are There Creatures in the Bible That Sound Like Dinosaurs?

Some people point to descriptions like:

• Behemoth (Job 40)
• Leviathan (Job 41)

These are described as:

• powerful
• massive
• beyond human control

Some believe these could refer to dinosaur-like creatures or other large animals

👉 But the Bible does not clearly label them as dinosaurs

So we don’t build doctrine on that — we just recognise the possibility.

When Did Dinosaurs Exist?

This is where different views come in.

Christians don’t all agree on the timeline:

• Some believe dinosaurs lived alongside humans
• Others believe they existed long before humans

👉 The Bible does not give a clear timeline for dinosaurs

What it does make clear is this:

👉 God created all living things
