How Do I Pray When I Don’t Know What to Say?
September 1, 2025
Why Should I Pray If God Already Knows Everything?
September 1, 2025Have you ever wondered, “Does God actually hear everyone’s prayers?”
Maybe you have prayed to God when you were desperate, even though you were not sure where you stood with Him. Or perhaps you have wondered whether God hears the prayers of people who do not believe in Him.
It is a really important question because the Bible gives us both comfort and a warning.
God is not distant from humanity. He created us, He knows us and He invites us to seek Him. The Bible even tells us that He is near to those who call on Him in truth.
At the same time, Scripture also makes it clear that our relationship with God matters. God cares about the condition of our hearts, the motives behind our prayers and whether we are willing to turn toward Him.
So, does God hear everyone’s prayers?
God certainly knows every prayer that is spoken, and He invites everyone to call upon Him. But the Bible also shows that there is a difference between God hearing a person’s cry and having the close relationship with God that comes through faith and reconciliation with Him.
God Is Near to Those Who Call on Him
One of the most comforting things about God is that He does not tell us we have to become perfect before we can come to Him.
He invites people to seek Him.
You do not have to have everything figured out before you pray. You do not have to know the right words. You do not even have to understand everything about Christianity before you call out to God.
Psalm 145:18 — God Is Near to Those Who Call
“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
God is near to those who genuinely seek Him.
That means if you are reaching out to God because you want to know Him, need His help or are asking Him to forgive you, you do not need to be afraid that He is ignoring you.
God Wants People to Come to Him
God’s invitation is not only for people who already know Him.
Throughout Scripture, we see God calling people to Himself.
The Gospel is offered to everyone, and anyone who calls upon the Lord can be saved.
Romans 10:13 — Everyone Who Calls on the Lord
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
That word “whosoever” matters.
God does not say that only certain people are allowed to call on Him.
The invitation is open.
If someone who has never followed God turns to Him sincerely and asks for forgiveness and salvation, they are not praying into an empty room.
God hears.
Does God Hear the Prayer of Someone Who Does Not Believe?
This is where we need to be careful with our wording.
The Bible does not teach that God is unaware of the prayers of unbelievers. God knows everything, including every word that is spoken and every thought in a person’s heart.
In fact, Scripture gives us examples of people seeking God before they fully understood who Jesus was or what salvation meant.
God can absolutely draw someone toward Himself through prayer.
A person may begin by saying something as simple as, “God, if You are real, please show me.”
That prayer can be the beginning of a relationship with Him.
God wants people to seek Him.
Acts 17:27 — God Is Not Far From Us
“That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.”
God is not far away from the person who is genuinely searching for Him.
But the Bible Also Says That Sin Can Hinder Prayer
There is another side to this question that we should not ignore.
The Bible teaches that the way we live and the condition of our hearts can affect our prayers.
This does not mean that God refuses to hear anyone who has ever sinned.
If that were true, none of us could pray.
We are all sinners, and we all need God’s mercy.
The issue is different when someone knowingly holds onto sin, refuses to repent and has no desire to follow God while expecting God to simply give them whatever they ask for.
Psalm 66:18 — Sin Can Become a Barrier
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”
The word “regard” here carries the idea of cherishing or holding onto sin.
God is not asking us to be sinless before we pray.
He is asking us to be honest with Him.
If we know something is wrong and we are deliberately choosing to cling to it while refusing to turn toward God, that affects our relationship with Him.
God Wants Us to Come to Him Through Jesus
The greatest reason prayer matters for Christians is that Jesus has made a way for us to come into God’s presence.
Sin separates us from God, but Jesus came to reconcile us to Him.
Through Christ, we are not approaching God as strangers trying to convince Him to listen.
We can come to Him as His children.
Hebrews 4:16 — Come Boldly to God
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
That is an incredible invitation.
Because of Jesus, we can come before God with confidence.
We do not have to wonder whether He wants us there.
He invites us.
God Hears the Prayers of His Children
The Bible repeatedly tells us that God listens to those who belong to Him.
1 Peter 3:12 — God’s Ears Are Open to His People
“For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”
God cares about the prayers of His people.
He sees them.
He listens to them.
He is attentive to them.
This does not mean that God gives Christians everything they ask for. It means that we have a real relationship with Him, and He invites us to bring our requests before Him.
Does God Always Answer Prayer?
Hearing a prayer and answering it in the way we want are not the same thing.
You can pray sincerely and still not receive the answer you hoped for.
Sometimes God says yes.
Sometimes He says no.
Sometimes He tells us to wait.
Sometimes He answers in a way we did not expect.
That does not mean He did not hear you.
1 John 5:14 — We Can Have Confidence in Prayer
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.”
Notice that John says “according to his will.”
Prayer is not about getting God to do whatever we want.
It is about bringing our desires to Him while trusting His wisdom and His will.
What If I Prayed and Nothing Happened?
This is where things can become really painful.
You may have prayed for healing and the person was not healed.
You may have prayed for your marriage and the relationship still fell apart.
You may have prayed for your finances, your children, your future or something you desperately needed, and you may still be waiting.
It is easy to think, “Maybe God didn’t hear me.”
But silence does not mean God was not listening.
Sometimes we do not understand what God is doing while we are in the middle of it.
The Bible tells us that God’s understanding is far greater than ours.
Isaiah 55:8–9 — God’s Ways Are Higher
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Not receiving the answer we wanted does not mean our prayer was ignored.
God may be working in ways we cannot yet see.
What If I Feel Like God Isn’t Listening?
If you have been praying and feel like God is silent, please do not assume that means He has abandoned you.
There are seasons when God feels very close, and there are seasons when He feels distant.
Our feelings can change, but God’s character does not.
Sometimes we need to continue seeking Him even when we do not feel anything.
Jeremiah 29:13 — Seek God With Your Whole Heart
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
God wants us to seek Him sincerely.
That means prayer is not just about getting an answer.
Sometimes the greatest thing God is doing through prayer is drawing us closer to Himself.
What If I Have Never Prayed Before?
If you have never really prayed before, you can start now.
You do not need special words.
You do not need to know how Christians are “supposed” to pray.
Just be honest.
You could say something as simple as:
“God, I don’t know if I have ever really known You, but I want to. Please forgive me, help me and show me who You are.”
God is not impressed by complicated prayers.
He cares about your heart.
God Hears the Cry of Someone Who Turns to Him
One of the most beautiful things about Scripture is that God repeatedly responds to people who turn toward Him.
The thief on the cross had very little time left, yet he turned to Jesus.
Luke 23:42–43 — Jesus Responded to the Thief
“And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
The thief did not have time to prove himself.
He simply turned toward Jesus and believed.
Jesus answered him.
That tells us something important about God’s heart.
You do not have to clean yourself up before you come to Jesus.
You come to Him, and He begins His work in you.
Does God Hear Everyone’s Prayers?
So, what is the biblical answer?
Yes, God knows every prayer and every cry. He is not unaware of what anyone says to Him. He invites all people to seek Him and promises that those who genuinely call upon Him can be saved.
At the same time, Scripture teaches that there is a difference between simply speaking words toward God and having a relationship with Him. Sin, wrong motives and a refusal to turn toward God can hinder prayer.
For those who belong to Christ, there is a beautiful assurance that God is not distant.
He is our Father.
We can come to Him.
We can talk to Him.
We can bring our fears, our needs, our failures and our hopes to Him.
And when we do not know what to say, we can still come.
Psalm 34:17–18 — God Is Near to Those Who Cry Out
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
If you are wondering whether God hears you today, keep talking to Him.
You do not have to pretend.
Tell Him what is hurting.
Tell Him what you are afraid of.
Tell Him what you need.
If you have never given your life to Him, tell Him that too.
God already knows what is in your heart.
And He is inviting you to come closer.
Through Jesus, we do not have to stand far away wondering whether God wants us to speak to Him.
We can come to Him.
And when we call on Him sincerely, we can trust that He hears.

Thank you for taking the time to share these Scriptures. There are certainly many passages throughout Scripture that teach us about prayer, faith, repentance, obedience, and seeking God’s will. I appreciate you adding these verses to the discussion. God bless you.
