What Does The Bible Say About Long Hair
March 24, 2025Did God create dinosaurs?
Yes. If God created all things, then dinosaurs were part of His creation.
The Bible does not use the modern word “dinosaur,” but that does not mean dinosaurs are inconsistent with the Bible. The word dinosaur was not coined until the nineteenth century, long after the biblical books were written.
The Bible teaches that God created the heavens, the earth, the sea and all kinds of living creatures. Dinosaurs, like every other animal that has ever existed, would therefore ultimately belong to God’s creation.
However, there are still important questions Christians ask.
When did dinosaurs live? Does the Bible mention them? Could Behemoth or Leviathan have been dinosaurs? Did dinosaurs live alongside humans?
The Bible does not answer every one of these questions directly, so we need to distinguish between what Scripture clearly teaches and interpretations that Christians have developed from the biblical text.
Quick Answer: Did God Create Dinosaurs?
Yes. The Bible teaches that God created all living creatures, so dinosaurs were part of God’s creation.
The Bible does not specifically use the word “dinosaur,” and it does not give us a detailed scientific history of dinosaurs.
Some Christians believe dinosaurs lived alongside humans, while others believe dinosaurs lived millions of years before humans.
The Bible itself does not provide enough information to establish a precise dinosaur timeline.
What Scripture does clearly teach is that God is the Creator of all things.
Genesis 1:24–25 — God Created the Animals
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”
The Bible describes God creating different kinds of land animals.
It does not attempt to provide a complete list of every species that has ever existed.
Dinosaurs therefore do not present a problem for the biblical teaching that God is the Creator.
Why Doesn’t the Bible Mention Dinosaurs?
The simplest answer is that the Bible was not written as a catalogue of every animal species.
Genesis gives us a broad account of God’s creation rather than a modern biological classification system.
For example, Scripture does not specifically mention many animals that we know exist today.
The absence of a particular animal’s modern name does not mean that animal was not created by God.
Genesis 1:20 — God Created Living Creatures
“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.”
God’s creation included an enormous variety of creatures.
The Bible’s purpose is not to provide a scientific encyclopaedia containing the name of every species.
Its central purpose is to reveal God, His relationship with humanity, the problem of sin, and His plan of salvation.
The Word “Dinosaur” Wasn’t Used in Biblical Times
This is an important point.
The word dinosaur is a relatively modern term.
The biblical writers did not have the scientific classification system that we use today.
Therefore, we should not expect to find the word “dinosaur” in Genesis, Job, Psalms or anywhere else in Scripture.
This is similar to asking why the Bible does not use many modern scientific or zoological terms.
The Bible was written in ancient languages and within ancient cultures.
What matters is what Scripture teaches about God’s creation.
Colossians 1:16 — All Things Were Created Through Christ
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
Paul makes an enormous statement here.
All things were created through Christ and for Christ.
Dinosaurs therefore do not sit outside the biblical account of creation.
If dinosaurs existed, they were part of the created order.
Did God Create Dinosaurs Before Humans?
The Bible teaches that God created animals before mankind.
In Genesis 1, land animals are created before Adam and Eve.
Genesis 1:25–27 — Animals Were Created Before Humanity
“And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
According to the Genesis creation account, animals existed before human beings.
However, this passage does not tell us which specific animals existed at which point in geological history.
That is why Christians have different interpretations concerning the age of the earth and the timeline of dinosaurs.
When Did Dinosaurs Live?
The Bible does not give us a specific date for when dinosaurs lived.
This is an area where Christians hold different views.
Some Christians interpret Genesis in a way that leads them to believe dinosaurs lived relatively recently and may have lived alongside humans.
Other Christians believe the earth is much older and that dinosaurs lived millions of years before human beings.
These positions involve different interpretations of Scripture alongside scientific evidence.
It is important not to present one particular dinosaur timeline as though the Bible explicitly gives us that timeline.
Genesis 1:1 — God Created the Beginning
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Whatever conclusions someone reaches concerning the age of the earth or the timing of dinosaurs, the foundational biblical claim remains the same:
God is the Creator.
Did Dinosaurs Live With Humans?
This is one of the most debated questions.
Some Christians believe that dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time.
Others believe dinosaurs became extinct long before humans appeared.
The Bible does not explicitly say:
“Dinosaurs lived alongside humans.”
Nor does it explicitly say:
“Dinosaurs became extinct millions of years before humans.”
Therefore, we should be careful about claiming certainty where Scripture does not give it.
The important biblical truth is that both animals and humanity ultimately belong to God’s creation.
Psalm 24:1 — Everything Belongs to God
“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
Whatever the precise timeline, dinosaurs do not challenge the biblical teaching that the earth belongs to God.
Does the Bible Mention Creatures That Sound Like Dinosaurs?
There are two creatures that are frequently discussed when people ask about dinosaurs in the Bible:
Behemoth in Job 40
and
Leviathan in Job 41.
Some Christians believe these descriptions could refer to dinosaurs or dinosaur-like creatures.
Others understand them as descriptions of known animals, poetic imagery, or extraordinary creatures.
The Bible does not explicitly call either one a dinosaur.
That distinction is important.
Was Behemoth a Dinosaur?
Job 40 contains a remarkable description of Behemoth.
God describes Behemoth as an exceptionally powerful creature.
Job 40:15–17 — Behold Behemoth
“Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.”
The phrase “he moveth his tail like a cedar” is one reason some Christians believe Behemoth may have been a dinosaur.
A large dinosaur with a powerful tail can certainly bring the description to mind.
However, the passage does not use the word dinosaur.
Some interpreters identify Behemoth with a hippopotamus, elephant or another large animal, while others believe the description does not fit any known modern animal particularly well.
We should therefore present the dinosaur interpretation as a possibility rather than a certainty.
Behemoth Was Created by God
Regardless of exactly what Behemoth was, God makes one thing clear.
“I made” it.
Job 40:15 — God Created Behemoth
“Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.”
The purpose of the passage is not primarily to identify an extinct animal.
God is demonstrating His power and wisdom to Job.
Behemoth is an example of a creature far more powerful than Job could control.
If Behemoth was a dinosaur, then dinosaurs would simply provide another remarkable example of God’s creative power.
Does Behemoth Have a Tail Like a Cedar?
This is one of the most interesting details in the passage.
Job 40:17 — Behemoth’s Tail
“He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.”
Some readers find it difficult to associate this description with a hippopotamus because a hippopotamus has a relatively small tail.
A large dinosaur with a long, powerful tail appears to fit the imagery more naturally.
However, the exact meaning of the ancient description is debated.
We should therefore avoid saying:
“Behemoth definitely was a dinosaur.”
The Bible does not explicitly tell us that.
A more careful conclusion is:
Behemoth may possibly describe a creature that resembles a dinosaur, but Scripture does not identify it as one.
What About Leviathan?
Leviathan appears in Job 41.
It is described as an extraordinarily powerful creature that humans cannot easily capture or control.
Job 41:1 — Can You Capture Leviathan?
“Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?”
The description that follows is one of the most unusual passages in the Bible.
Job 41:18–21 — Fire and Smoke
“By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.”
Some Christians have suggested that Leviathan could be a dinosaur or another prehistoric creature.
Others believe the passage is poetic imagery describing a terrifying sea creature.
Again, the Bible does not say:
“Leviathan was a dinosaur.”
We should not make that claim as though it were explicitly taught in Scripture.
Could Leviathan Have Been a Dinosaur?
It is possible that Leviathan describes a creature unlike anything alive today.
It is also possible that the description uses dramatic poetic language.
The Bible gives us insufficient information to identify Leviathan with certainty as a particular extinct species.
What we can say confidently is that Leviathan is portrayed as a creature of extraordinary power.
Job 41:10–11 — God Is Greater Than Leviathan
“None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.”
This is the most important part of the passage.
God’s purpose in describing Leviathan is ultimately to reveal His own greatness.
If human beings cannot control Leviathan, God can.
If Leviathan is powerful, God is greater.
Does the Bible Say Dinosaurs Were Dragons?
Not directly.
Some ancient descriptions of dragons may remind modern readers of dinosaurs.
The Bible also uses words that are translated as serpent, dragon or sea creature in different passages.
However, we should not automatically equate every biblical reference to a dragon with a dinosaur.
Biblical language and modern scientific categories are not identical.
Psalm 148:7 — Great Sea Creatures
“Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:”
Depending on the Bible translation, the Hebrew word used here may be translated in different ways, including creatures associated with the sea or dragons.
This does not establish that the Bible is describing dinosaurs.
It does, however, demonstrate the Bible’s repeated emphasis on God’s authority over even the most powerful creatures.
Why Did God Create Dinosaurs?
The Bible gives us a broader answer to this question.
God created the world for His glory.
Creation displays His wisdom, power and greatness.
Psalm 19:1 — Creation Declares God’s Glory
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
The enormous size and diversity of dinosaurs can actually deepen our appreciation of creation.
Some dinosaurs were enormous.
Others were relatively small.
Some had extraordinary physical features.
Their existence reminds us that the natural world contains an astonishing variety of life.
For Christians, that variety ultimately points back to the Creator.
Dinosaurs Do Not Challenge God’s Creation
For some people, dinosaurs seem to create a conflict between Christianity and science.
But the existence of dinosaurs does not contradict the basic biblical teaching that God created the world.
The question of when dinosaurs lived is a separate question from who created them.
A Christian can believe that God created dinosaurs while having different views about the age of the earth and the precise timeline of their existence.
Psalm 104:24 — God’s Wisdom in Creation
“O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.”
The Bible celebrates the incredible diversity of God’s creation.
Dinosaurs can be considered within that larger picture.
What Happened to the Dinosaurs?
The Bible does not tell us exactly how or when dinosaurs became extinct.
We therefore should not claim that Scripture gives a detailed explanation of their extinction.
There are various scientific theories concerning dinosaur extinction, but the Bible’s focus is elsewhere.
Romans 1:20 — Creation Reveals God’s Power
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”
The biblical emphasis is on what creation reveals about God.
The existence of extinct creatures does not change that.
Did Noah Take Dinosaurs on the Ark?
This question is connected to the debate about whether dinosaurs lived alongside humans.
Some Christians who believe in a young-earth interpretation of Genesis believe dinosaurs were present before the Flood and that some may have been preserved on Noah’s Ark.
Others believe dinosaurs lived millions of years before humans and therefore do not place dinosaurs within the biblical Flood account.
The Bible does not specifically say:
“Noah took dinosaurs onto the Ark.”
Nor does it give a detailed list of every animal species that entered the Ark.
Genesis 6:19–20 — Animals Enter the Ark
“And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.”
The passage describes animals being preserved according to their kinds.
Whether particular dinosaurs were included depends on how someone understands the chronology of Genesis.
This is an area where Christians can disagree without changing the central Gospel.
Did Dinosaurs Become Extinct Because of the Fall?
The Bible teaches that death and corruption entered the human experience through sin.
However, Scripture does not give us enough detail to say exactly how the Fall affected every species that has ever lived.
Romans 8:20–22 — Creation Groans
“For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
The Bible teaches that creation has been affected by the Fall and looks forward to future restoration.
But it does not specifically explain the extinction of dinosaurs.
We should therefore avoid presenting a particular dinosaur extinction theory as a direct biblical teaching.
What Does the Bible Teach About Creation?
Whatever view someone takes concerning dinosaurs, the Bible’s foundational teaching about creation is clear.
God created.
Creation is not independent of Him.
Human beings are not the ultimate authority over the universe.
Genesis 1:1 — In the Beginning
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
This is the foundation.
Before discussing dinosaurs, fossils, extinction or geological timelines, the Bible begins with God.
God is the Creator.
Does Believing in Dinosaurs Mean You Have to Reject the Bible?
No.
The existence of dinosaurs does not require someone to reject Scripture.
The Bible never says that only the animals we see alive today were created by God.
In fact, Scripture explicitly teaches that God’s creation is far greater than what any individual generation can observe.
Psalm 90:2 — God Is Before Creation
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
God existed before the world.
Dinosaurs did not create themselves.
Humanity did not create itself.
Everything ultimately depends upon the Creator.
What Can We Say With Confidence?
There are several things we can say confidently from Scripture.
God created the heavens and the earth.
God created living creatures.
Animals existed before humanity according to Genesis.
The Bible does not use the modern word “dinosaur.”
The Bible mentions unusual creatures such as Behemoth and Leviathan, but it does not explicitly identify Behemoth or Leviathan as dinosaurs. There is also no precise timeline for dinosaurs in the Bible.
These distinctions are important because they allow us to take Scripture seriously without claiming that the Bible says something it does not actually say.
What Does the Existence of Dinosaurs Tell Us About God?
Dinosaurs can remind us of the incredible scale of God’s creation.
Some were enormous, some had remarkable physical characteristics.
Some existed for millions of years according to the conventional scientific timeline.
And today, we know them primarily through fossils.
Yet none of this makes God smaller.
Job 12:7–10 — Creation Points to God
“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this?
In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.”
Creation itself points toward its Creator.
Dinosaurs can be part of that testimony.
Their existence can lead us to wonder at the complexity, variety and power of God’s creation.
Should Christians Be Afraid of Questions About Dinosaurs?
No.
Christians do not need to be afraid of honest questions.
It is perfectly reasonable to ask:
- When did dinosaurs live?
- Were dinosaurs on Noah’s Ark?
- Was Behemoth a dinosaur?
- Was Leviathan a dinosaur?
- Did dinosaurs live alongside humans?
- How do fossils fit with the biblical account of creation?
- How should Christians understand scientific evidence?
Some questions can be answered with considerable confidence.
Others require interpretation.
And some simply cannot be answered from Scripture.
That is okay.
Deuteronomy 29:29 — God Has Not Revealed Everything
“The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
There are things God has revealed.
There are also things He has not revealed.
We do not need to pretend that Scripture answers every scientific question in order to trust it.
The Bible’s Main Message Is Bigger Than Dinosaurs
It is easy for a discussion about dinosaurs to become entirely focused on fossils, timelines and scientific theories.
But the Bible’s purpose is much greater.
The Bible tells us:
Who created us.
Why humanity is separated from God by sin.
What God has done to save us.
Who Jesus Christ is.
Why Jesus died and rose again.
And how God will ultimately restore His creation.
John 1:3 — All Things Were Made Through Christ
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
Jesus Christ is not separate from the story of creation.
The One who came to save humanity is also the One through whom all things were made.
Bible Verses About God Creating All Things
If you want to study what the Bible says about God’s creation, these passages are especially helpful.
Genesis 1:1 — God Created the Heavens and the Earth
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
God Created the Animals – Genesis 1:25
“And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”
Genesis 1:31 — God Saw That His Creation Was Very Good
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
Psalm 19:1 — Creation Declares God’s Glory
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 104:24 — God Made All Things in Wisdom
“O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.”
Colossians 1:16 — All Things Were Created Through Christ
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
John 1:3 — Nothing Was Created Apart From Him
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
Revelation 4:11 — God Created All Things
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
Final Thought
So, did God create dinosaurs?
Yes.
If dinosaurs existed, then they were part of God’s creation just as every other living creature is.
The Bible does not use the modern word “dinosaur,” but that should not surprise us. Scripture was not written to provide a complete catalogue of every species that has ever existed.
Some biblical creatures, particularly Behemoth in Job 40 and Leviathan in Job 41, have descriptions that some Christians believe could refer to dinosaur-like or prehistoric creatures. However, the Bible does not explicitly identify either creature as a dinosaur, so we should not present that interpretation as certain.
The Bible also does not give us enough information to establish exactly when dinosaurs lived or precisely how their existence fits into every detail of Earth’s history.
But we do not need to know every detail to know the most important truth.
Psalm 96:5 — The Lord Made the Heavens
“For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.”
Dinosaurs do not make God less powerful.
They do not make the Bible less meaningful.
And they do not need to be something Christians fear.
Instead, they can remind us just how extraordinary God’s creation is.
The God who created the enormous creatures that once walked the earth is the same God who created you, knows you, loves you, and calls you to know Him.
Romans 1:20 — Creation Reveals God’s Power
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”
The dinosaurs may be extinct.
But the Creator is not.
God remains the Creator, and all creation ultimately points back to Him.
