- What does God think about it?
The Bible never directly mentions masturbation.
However, it does clearly teach about:
- lust
- sexual purity
- self-control
- holiness
- and honouring God with our bodies.
Because masturbation is ordinarily accompanied by lustful thoughts or sexual fantasy, most Christians conclude that it is inconsistent with God’s call to sexual purity.

Does the Bible Mention Masturbation?
The Bible does not specifically mention masturbation.
Because of this, scripture never directly says:
“Masturbation is a sin.”
However, the Bible does speak clearly about the thoughts, desires, and attitudes that often accompany it.
When answering this question, Christians should base their conclusions on the Bible’s clear teaching about sexual purity rather than on assumptions or tradition.
Jesus Condemned Lust
One of the clearest passages relating to this topic is found in Matthew 5.
Jesus said:
Matthew 5:27–28 says:
“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
Jesus taught that sin begins in the heart.
Although the physical act of masturbation is not mentioned, lust itself is clearly identified as sin.
Because masturbation ordinarily involves lustful thoughts or sexual fantasy, many Christians conclude that it is inconsistent with Jesus’ teaching.
God Calls Believers to Sexual Purity
The Bible repeatedly calls Christians to pursue holiness in every area of life, including sexuality.
First Thessalonians 4:3–5 says:
“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.”
God’s desire is for believers to honour Him with both their bodies and their minds.
Sexual purity involves far more than avoiding outward acts of immorality.
It also includes our thoughts, desires, and motives.
Practice Self-Control
Self-control is one of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Rather than allowing desires to control us, God calls believers to submit every area of life to Christ.
First Corinthians 6:12 says:
“All things are lawful unto me… but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
Whether the temptation involves sexual sin or something else, Christians should not allow any desire to master them.
Honour God With Your Body
The Bible teaches that believers belong to Christ.
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
First Corinthians 6:19–20 says:
“Ye are not your own.
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”
Every decision we make should reflect our desire to honour God.
When considering any behaviour, believers should ask:
“Does this glorify Christ?”
What About the Story of Onan?
Some people point to the account of Onan in Genesis 38 as a passage about masturbation.
However, the text says Onan was judged because he deliberately refused to fulfil his family responsibility by giving offspring to his deceased brother’s wife (Genesis 38:8–10).
The passage does not specifically teach about masturbation.
For that reason, it should not be used as the primary argument when discussing this topic.
God Offers Forgiveness and Freedom
Like every other sin, lust can be forgiven through Jesus Christ.
If you have struggled with lust, pornography, or masturbation, you are not beyond God’s grace.
When we confess our sins and turn to Him, He forgives us and helps us grow in holiness.
First John 1:9 says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.”
God does not simply forgive.
He also transforms those who trust Him.
How to Pursue Sexual Purity (Practical Steps)
1. Guard your thoughts
Sin often begins in the mind.
What to do:
- Reject lustful thoughts
- Fill your mind with scripture
- Focus on what is pure

2. Depend on the Holy Spirit
You do not have to fight temptation alone.
What to do:
- Pray daily
- Ask God for strength
- Walk in obedience
👉 God gives believers power to overcome temptation.
3. Remove temptation
Avoid anything that encourages lust.
What to do:
- Limit harmful media
- Stay accountable
- Make wise choices online
👉 Wisdom helps protect purity.
4. Practice self-control
Grow in spiritual maturity.
What to do:
- Develop healthy habits
- Spend time with God
- Learn to say no to temptation
👉 Self-control is evidence of spiritual growth.
5. Receive God’s grace
Do not remain in guilt.
What to do:
- Confess your sin
- Accept God’s forgiveness
- Continue following Christ
