What the Bible Says About Women in Ministry
The Bible records many faithful women whom God used to accomplish His purposes.
Women:
- taught children and families (2 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:14–15)
- taught younger women (Titus 2:3–5)
- shared the Gospel (John 4:28–30; Matthew 28:7–10)
- prophesied (Acts 2:17–18; Acts 21:9)
- served alongside Paul in ministry (Romans 16:1–7; Philippians 4:2–3)
- and faithfully supported Jesus’ ministry (Luke 8:1–3).
These passages demonstrate that God values women and gives them meaningful opportunities to serve His kingdom.
The Qualifications for Pastors and Elders
The New Testament gives qualifications for elders, also called overseers or pastors.
First Timothy 3:1–2 says:
“If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…”
Likewise, Titus 1:5–6 gives similar qualifications.
Many Christians understand these passages to teach that the office of elder or pastor is reserved for qualified men because the qualifications consistently describe a male officeholder.
Others believe these passages describe the typical leaders in that culture and do not permanently exclude women from serving as pastors.

Others believe Paul was addressing a specific situation in Ephesus involving false teaching and disorder, making the instruction specific to that context.

There Is No Clear Example of a Female Pastor
The New Testament records many faithful women serving God.
However, it does not clearly identify a woman as serving in the office of elder or pastor over a local church.
Some point to women such as:
- Phoebe (Romans 16:1–2)
- Priscilla (Acts 18:26)
- Junia (Romans 16:7)
as evidence for female pastors.
Others respond that these women faithfully served in ministry but were not described as elders or pastors.
Because these passages are interpreted differently, Christians have reached different conclusions.
Men and Women Are Equal Before God
The Bible clearly teaches that men and women have equal value before God.
Genesis 1:27 says:
“So God created man in his own image… male and female created he them.”
Galatians 3:28 says:
“Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Both men and women:
- bear God’s image (Genesis 1:27)
- receive salvation through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9)
- receive spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7)
- and are called to serve God’s kingdom.
The discussion is not about value but about how certain passages should be understood regarding church leadership.
Keep Christ at the Centre
The question of female pastors is important because it concerns how believers understand and apply scripture.
However, this discussion should never distract Christians from the Gospel.
Every believer is called to:
- love God
- love others
- proclaim the Gospel
- make disciples
- and faithfully serve Christ.
Whatever conclusion someone reaches, it should come from careful study of God’s Word and a sincere desire to obey Him.
