Money itself is not evil.
The Bible never says:
- having money is sinful
- working hard is wrong
- or providing for yourself and your family is bad
But scripture does repeatedly warn about something else:
👉 the love of money.
When money becomes:
- your security
- your identity
- your main goal
- or what controls your decisions
it can slowly pull your heart away from God.
Many people spend their lives chasing:
- more success
- more possessions
- more status
- more comfort
thinking it will finally satisfy them.
But the Bible teaches:
👉 real peace and contentment are not found in money — they are found in God.

- Be honest about what controls your heart most
- Stop basing your worth on money or success
- Thank God for what you already have
- Ask God to help you develop contentment
- Use money wisely without making it your master
👉 Money is a tool — not your source of peace, identity, or security
What the Bible Says About Loving Money
The Bible gives strong warnings about greed and the love of money.
1 Timothy 6:10 says:
“For the love of money is the root of all evil…”
Notice:
👉 the verse does not say money itself is evil.
It says:
👉 loving money causes many kinds of spiritual problems.
Why?
Because the love of money can lead people toward:
- greed
- pride
- selfishness
- dishonesty
- anxiety
- envy
- and spiritual compromise
Jesus also warned:
“Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” — Matthew 6:24
This means:
👉 eventually, something becomes your master.
The Bible teaches believers to trust:
- God over wealth
- eternal things over temporary things
- and contentment over endless chasing.
How to Avoid Loving Money (Practical Steps)
1. Be honest about what you trust most
Many people trust money more than they trust God.
They believe:
- money will guarantee safety
- success will bring peace
- possessions will create happiness
But money cannot provide:
- salvation
- lasting peace
- purpose
- or eternal security
What to do:
- Ask yourself honestly:
- “What do I rely on most emotionally?”
- Bring financial fears honestly to God
- Remember that security ultimately comes from Him
👉 Money can help practically, but it cannot replace God
2. Learn contentment
One reason people become consumed by money is because they never feel satisfied.
The world constantly teaches:
- “You need more”
- “You are behind”
- “You’ll be happy when you finally get enough”
But the Bible teaches contentment instead.
What to do:
- Thank God regularly for what you already have
- Stop constantly comparing yourself to others
- Focus on needs before endless wants
Philippians 4:11 says:
“I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”
👉 Contentment protects your heart from greed
3. Don’t build your identity around success
Some people become consumed with:
- status
- achievement
- appearance
- wealth
- or recognition
But your value does not come from financial success.
Your identity should be grounded in God.
What to do:
- Stop measuring your worth by money or possessions
- Remember that earthly success is temporary
- Focus on becoming spiritually rich, not just materially rich
👉 A person can look successful outwardly while being spiritually empty inwardly
4. Use money wisely instead of selfishly
The Bible encourages wisdom and stewardship.
Money itself can be used for:
- good
- generosity
- helping others
- and meeting needs
What to do:
- Spend responsibly
- Avoid greed and reckless decisions
- Be generous when possible
- Use what you have wisely
👉 Wise stewardship honours God
5. Keep eternal things first
The danger of loving money is that temporary things slowly become more important than eternal things.
Jesus repeatedly reminded people that earthly possessions do not last forever.
What to do:
- Prioritise your relationship with God
- Focus on spiritual growth
- Remember that life is bigger than possessions and status
Matthew 6:33 says:
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God…”

- compare yourself constantly
- or build your life entirely around wealth
You need to:
- trust God

Over time, something begins to happen.
👉 Greed loses some of its control
👉 Comparison weakens
👉 Peace grows stronger
👉 Contentment becomes deeper
And instead of being consumed by constantly needing more…
