The Danger of Loving Money: Finding Contentment in Christ
January 11, 2025Bible Verses For Endurance
January 15, 2025Music can affect people deeply.
It can:
- influence your thinking
- affect your emotions
- shape your mindset
- strengthen certain desires
- and impact your spiritual focus
That’s why many Christians start asking questions like:
- “Is secular music sinful?”
- “Can I enjoy music without harming my relationship with God?”
- “How do I know what music is affecting me negatively?”
The Bible does not give a list of forbidden music genres.
But it does teach something important:
👉 What you continually fill your mind with matters.
So this is not really about legalism or trying to control every song.
It’s about wisdom, discernment, and protecting your spiritual life.
⚡ What To Do Right Now
- Pay attention to how certain music affects your thoughts and behaviour
- Remove music that constantly pulls you toward sin or darkness
- Stop treating entertainment like it has no spiritual influence
- Fill your mind with things that strengthen your faith instead of weakening it
- Ask God for wisdom and discernment about what you consume
👉 Not all music affects people the same way — but all music influences people somehow
What the Bible Says About Music and Influence
The Bible actually speaks positively about music in many places.
Music was used for:
- worship
- praise
- celebration
- encouragement
- and thanksgiving.
For example:
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…” — Ephesians 5:19
The Bible also shows David using music skillfully, and the Psalms are filled with songs and worship.
So music itself is not evil.
The real issue becomes:
👉 what the music is feeding inside you.
The Bible repeatedly teaches people to guard:
- their heart
- their mind
- and what influences them.
Philippians 4:8 says to think on things that are:
- true
- pure
- lovely
- and good
That means Christians should think carefully about:
- lyrics
- messages
- attitudes
- and how music affects them spiritually.
How to Enjoy Music Wisely as a Christian (Practical Steps)
1. Pay attention to the fruit of the music
Instead of obsessing over labels or genres, ask:
- What does this music produce in me?
- Does it pull me closer to God or further away?
- Does it feed:
- anger
- lust
- pride
- darkness
- rebellion
- hopelessness?
Jesus taught that fruit reveals what something produces.
What to do:
- Be honest about how music affects your mind
- Notice patterns in your thoughts and behaviour
- Remove music that consistently harms your spiritual life
👉 Entertainment is not spiritually neutral when it constantly feeds sin
2. Stop becoming consumed by music
Music itself is not supposed to become an idol.
Anything can become unhealthy when it controls:
- your thoughts
- your emotions
- your identity
- or your focus more than God
What to do:
- Keep balance
- Make sure music is not replacing time with God
- Stay aware of what dominates your attention
👉 Good things become unhealthy when they begin controlling you
3. Use discernment instead of legalism
The Bible does not provide a complete list of:
- acceptable genres
- instruments
- rhythms
- or artists
This is where wisdom matters.
Some Christians become extremely fearful about all non-Christian music.
Others ignore spiritual influence completely.
Neither extreme is healthy.
What to do:
- Ask:
- “Is this drawing me toward sin?”
- “Does this affect my relationship with God negatively?”
- Pray for discernment instead of following fear or guilt alone
👉 Wisdom usually matters more than rigid rules
4. Fill your life with music that strengthens your faith too
The Bible repeatedly connects music with:
- worship
- encouragement
- thanksgiving
- and truth.
Christian music can:
- encourage you
- refocus your mind on God
- strengthen faith
- and help renew your thinking
What to do:
- Spend time listening to worship and biblically grounded music
- Use music to help focus on God
- Fill your environment with truth regularly
👉 What you repeatedly listen to shapes your thinking over time
5. Guard your heart without becoming fearful
Some people become anxious and afraid of every song.
But Christianity is not meant to become fear-driven.
The goal is not paranoia.
The goal is wisdom and spiritual health.
What to do:
- Avoid obsessive fear over every small thing
- Stay grounded in scripture
- Let the Holy Spirit guide your convictions
- Focus on staying spiritually healthy, not obsessively restrictive
👉 God calls believers to wisdom, not constant fear
