Why do bad things happen to good people?

Why Do I Still Struggle Even Though I’m a Christian?
August 19, 2025One of the hardest things a Christian can experience is praying for something with all your heart and then feeling like God did not answer.
Maybe you prayed for healing, but the person you love is still sick. Maybe you prayed for your marriage, your family, your finances or a difficult situation to change, but nothing seems to be getting better. Perhaps you prayed for something for months or even years and eventually started wondering, “God, are You listening to me?”
If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone.
The Bible is full of people who prayed, waited, questioned God and wondered why He had not answered them yet. Scripture does not tell us that every prayer will be answered in exactly the way we want. Instead, it teaches us that God hears His children, that He cares about what we bring to Him and that His understanding is greater than ours.
Sometimes God answers with yes.
Sometimes He answers with no.
Sometimes the answer is wait.
And sometimes, we may not understand the answer at all until much later.
That can be difficult, especially when we desperately want something to change. But an unanswered prayer does not mean that God has stopped listening, stopped caring or abandoned you.
Does God Hear Our Prayers?
Before we look at why God may not answer a prayer in the way we expected, we need to remember something important: God hears us.
When we pray, we are not speaking into an empty room and hoping that someone might be listening. God knows us, sees us and hears the prayers of His people.
Psalm 34:17 — The Lord Hears His People
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
God hears the cries of His people.
That does not mean He will always remove the trouble immediately. The same Bible that tells us God hears our prayers also shows us people who cried out to Him while continuing to wait.
God hearing us and God answering in the way we want are two different things.
Why Doesn’t God Always Give Us What We Ask For?
Sometimes we approach prayer as though God’s role is to give us whatever we ask for if we have enough faith.
But prayer is not about getting God to do what we want.
Prayer is about bringing our hearts, our needs and our desires before God while trusting Him with the outcome.
Jesus Himself showed us this when He prayed before going to the cross.
Matthew 26:39 — Jesus Prayed for the Father’s Will
“And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
Jesus asked the Father for the cup of suffering to be taken from Him.
Yet Jesus also surrendered His own desire to the Father’s will.
This is an important part of Christian prayer. We can be completely honest with God about what we want while still trusting Him enough to say, “Your will be done.”
Sometimes God Says No
There are times when God does not give us what we ask for.
That can be incredibly painful, especially when we believed we knew exactly what would make things better.
But God sees things that we cannot see.
We only see the present situation. God sees the beginning, the middle and the end. We see what we think will make us happy, while God knows what will ultimately accomplish His purposes in our lives.
Isaiah 55:8–9 — God’s Ways Are Higher Than Ours
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
This does not mean that our pain does not matter to God.
It means that there are times when we simply cannot understand why God has allowed something to happen.
A “no” from God does not mean He does not love us.
Sometimes the very thing we are asking God to give us, change or remove is something He knows would not be good for us in the long run.
Sometimes God’s Answer Is Wait
Not every unanswered prayer is a no.
Sometimes the answer is simply not yet.
This can be one of the hardest answers to receive because waiting can feel like silence.
We may wonder how long we are supposed to wait or whether God has forgotten what we asked Him for.
But throughout Scripture, God’s people often had to wait for His promises to be fulfilled.
Psalm 27:14 — Wait on the Lord
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Waiting does not mean doing nothing.
It means continuing to trust God while we do not yet have the answer we are hoping for.
Sometimes God is working in circumstances we cannot see, preparing something we are not yet ready for or changing things in ways we do not understand.
God May Be Working While You Are Waiting
One of the hardest things about waiting on God is that we usually cannot see what He is doing.
We pray from our limited perspective, but God sees the whole picture.
Think about Joseph in the Bible. His brothers sold him into slavery, and for years his life looked as though it was going in completely the wrong direction.
Yet God was working through those circumstances.
Eventually Joseph was placed in a position where he could save many people from famine.
Genesis 50:20 — God Can Bring Good From What Was Meant for Evil
“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”
Joseph could not see God’s plan while he was sitting in a pit or serving as a slave.
He had to live through years of circumstances that probably made very little sense at the time.
Sometimes our unanswered prayers are like that.
We may not understand what God is doing while we are in the middle of it.
God May Be Doing Something in You While You Pray for Something Around You to Change
Sometimes we pray for God to change our circumstances, but God begins by changing us.
We may pray, “God, change this situation,” while God is teaching us patience, faith, forgiveness, wisdom, courage or dependence on Him.
That does not mean God will never change the situation.
It means that our relationship with Him is more important than simply getting the outcome we want.
Romans 5:3–5 — Trials Can Produce Endurance and Hope
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
God can use difficult seasons to develop things in us that could not have developed in exactly the same way during easier seasons.
That does not mean we should want suffering.
It means God can use even difficult circumstances to grow us.
What If You Have Prayed for Healing?
This is one of the most painful areas of unanswered prayer.
You may have prayed for yourself or someone you love to be healed. You may have believed God could heal them, and you may have trusted Him completely, only to see the sickness continue.
The Bible absolutely teaches that God can heal.
But Scripture does not teach that every person who prays for healing will receive physical healing immediately or in this life.
Paul himself prayed about a painful problem and asked God to remove it.
2 Corinthians 12:8–9 — Paul’s Prayer Was Not Answered the Way He Wanted
“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul prayed three times for the problem to be removed.
God did not give Paul the answer he wanted.
Instead, God gave him grace to endure it.
This is important because it shows us that an unanswered prayer does not necessarily mean that someone lacks faith.
Paul was a faithful servant of God, yet God allowed something painful to remain in his life.
An Unanswered Prayer Does Not Mean You Do Not Have Enough Faith
Sometimes Christians are told that if their prayer was not answered, they simply did not have enough faith.
That can leave people feeling ashamed and confused.
But the Bible does not support the idea that every unanswered prayer is caused by a lack of faith.
Paul had faith.
Jesus had perfect faith.
Yet both experienced situations where the outcome was different from what they initially desired.
Faith does not mean believing that God must give us exactly what we ask for.
Faith means trusting God even when He does not.
Jesus Understands What It Feels Like to Ask and Wait
Jesus knows what it is like to pray with deep emotion.
Before His crucifixion, He knew exactly what was coming. He asked the Father whether there was another way, yet He ultimately surrendered Himself to the Father’s will.
Luke 22:42 — “Not My Will, But Thine, Be Done”
“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”
Jesus understands what it is like to bring a desperate request before God.
So if you have prayed through tears, you are not praying to a God who does not understand.
Jesus understands.
Sometimes We Ask for Something That God Never Promised
This is another important part of understanding unanswered prayer.
The Bible contains many promises from God, but not every desire we have is a promise God has made.
For example, Scripture promises that God will never leave His people. It promises salvation through Christ, forgiveness for those who repent and believe, wisdom when we ask Him, and His presence through our trials.
But the Bible does not promise that every Christian will have a healthy body, a perfect marriage, financial wealth, a trouble-free life or that every person we love will live as long as we want them to.
1 John 5:14 — We Can Pray According to God’s Will
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:”
The phrase “according to his will” matters.
Christian prayer is not about forcing God to fulfil our wishes.
It is about bringing our requests to Him while trusting His will.
What If God Has Not Answered Yet?
If you have prayed about something and nothing has changed, do not automatically assume that God has said no.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting Him.
Keep bringing the situation before Him.
Jesus encouraged His followers to continue praying rather than giving up.
Luke 18:1 — We Should Always Pray and Not Give Up
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”
There may be times when you feel tired of praying because you have asked for the same thing so many times.
God understands.
You can tell Him that.
You do not have to pretend that waiting is easy.
You can come to God honestly and say, “Lord, I am struggling to keep believing. Please help me trust You while I wait.”
What If God Says No?
A “no” from God can hurt deeply.
Sometimes we understand why later. Other times, we may never understand it in this life.
That does not mean there is no purpose behind it.
God knows what we cannot know.
Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust God Instead of Leaning on Our Own Understanding
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Trusting God does not mean that we understand everything He does.
It means we trust Him even when we do not.
That is what makes faith faith.
God Can Use an Unanswered Prayer for Good
Sometimes we look back years later and realise that the thing we desperately wanted would not have been good for us.
Maybe God closed a door because He was protecting us.
Maybe He delayed something because we were not ready.
Maybe He allowed us to walk through a difficult season because it would eventually lead us somewhere we never would have gone on our own.
We may not always see the reason.
But we can trust that God is able to work through every part of our lives.
Romans 8:28 — God Works All Things for Good
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
This verse does not say that everything that happens is good.
There are painful things that are genuinely painful.
Instead, it tells us that God can work all things together for good.
He can take something we never would have chosen and still use it for His purposes.
God Is Not Punishing You by Not Answering Your Prayer
If you have prayed and nothing has changed, it can be tempting to think that God is angry with you.
You may wonder whether you have done something wrong or whether He is withholding the answer because you are not good enough.
Remember that our relationship with God is not based on our ability to earn His love.
We come to God through Jesus.
Romans 8:38–39 — Nothing Can Separate Us From God’s Love
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
An unanswered prayer does not mean that God has stopped loving you.
His love is not measured by whether you received the answer you wanted.
God’s love was demonstrated most clearly through Jesus.
What Should I Do When God Hasn’t Answered My Prayer?
Keep talking to Him.
You do not need perfect words. You do not need to pretend that you are not disappointed. You can tell God exactly how you feel.
Read His Word and remind yourself of what He has already promised.
Ask Him for wisdom rather than only asking Him to change the circumstances.
Surround yourself with godly people who can encourage you when your faith feels weak.
And most importantly, do not walk away from God simply because you do not understand what He is doing.
Philippians 4:6–7 — Bring Your Requests to God
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
God invites us to bring our requests to Him.
That includes the prayers that have not yet been answered.
What If I Am Angry With God?
You may even feel angry with God because of an unanswered prayer.
If that is where you are, you do not have to hide it from Him.
The Bible contains many prayers from people who were confused, grieving and desperate. The Psalms are filled with people crying out to God and asking Him why He seems distant.
God already knows what is in your heart.
It is better to bring your pain honestly to Him than to pretend everything is fine while quietly walking away.
Psalm 13:1–2 — David Asked God Why
“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”
David was honest with God about how he felt.
Yet he did not stay there.
By the end of the Psalm, David was still choosing to trust God.
Psalm 13:5–6 — David Chose to Trust
“But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”
You can bring your questions to God and still choose to trust Him.
God Has Not Forgotten You
If you have been praying for something for a long time, it can begin to feel as though God has forgotten you.
He has not.
God sees what you are going through.
He knows what you have asked Him for.
He knows the tears you have cried and the prayers you have whispered when you did not even know what else to say.
Psalm 56:8 — God Sees Our Tears
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
God sees the tears that other people never see.
Your prayers matter to Him even when you cannot yet see the answer.
Sometimes the Answer Is Different From What We Expected
One of the hardest things about prayer is that we often have a very specific picture of what God’s answer should look like.
We may pray for God to restore one relationship, but He may lead us into a different relationship.
We may pray for one particular opportunity, but God may close that door and open another.
We may pray for God to remove a struggle, while He gives us strength to walk through it and uses it to develop something deeper in us.
We may pray for immediate healing, while God brings healing gradually or ultimately gives complete healing in eternity.
God’s answer may not always look like the answer we imagined.
That does not mean He has not been working.
God Is Still Good When the Answer Is No
This may be one of the hardest lessons in faith.
It is easy to praise God when He gives us exactly what we wanted.
Trusting Him when the answer is no requires something deeper.
We have to believe that God is good because of who He is, not simply because of what He gives us.
Psalm 100:5 — The Lord Is Good
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
God’s goodness does not change when our circumstances change.
He was good before the prayer.
He is good while we wait.
And He is still good if the answer is not what we hoped for.
What If I Never Understand Why?
There may be prayers that you never understand the answer to in this life.
That can be difficult to accept.
But Christianity does not require us to understand everything God does.
There are things about God that are far beyond our understanding.
Romans 11:33 — God’s Wisdom Is Beyond Us
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
We may not understand God’s ways, but we can know God’s character.
We know that He is faithful.
We know that He is good.
We know that He loves us.
We know that He sent Jesus to save us.
And we know that He promises to never leave His people.
Those truths can hold us when we do not have an explanation.
Your Unanswered Prayer Does Not Mean God Is Silent Forever
If you are waiting for an answer right now, I want to encourage you not to give up on God.
Maybe you have prayed the same prayer hundreds of times.
Maybe you are exhausted from waiting.
Maybe you are beginning to wonder whether God even heard you.
Keep bringing it to Him.
You do not need to know what God is doing in order to trust Him.
Isaiah 40:31 — Those Who Wait on the Lord Will Renew Their Strength
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Waiting can be painful, but waiting does not mean God is doing nothing.
Sometimes the waiting itself becomes part of how God strengthens our faith.
Why Didn’t God Answer My Prayer?
There may not be one answer that explains every unanswered prayer.
Sometimes God says no because what we are asking for is not His will. Sometimes the answer is wait because the timing is not right. Sometimes God allows us to walk through something because He is doing a deeper work in us. Sometimes He answers in a way we did not expect.
And sometimes, honestly, we simply do not know.
But we can know this: an unanswered prayer does not mean an uncaring God.
God hears you.
He sees you.
He knows what you need.
He knows what you have been praying for.
And He is still with you.
If you are waiting for an answer today, keep praying. Keep seeking God. Keep reading His Word. Keep trusting Him even when you cannot see what He is doing.
You are allowed to tell God that you are hurting. You are allowed to ask Him questions. You are allowed to cry.
Just do not let an unanswered prayer convince you that God has abandoned you.
Sometimes God’s answer is yes.
Sometimes it is no.
Sometimes it is wait.
But whatever the answer is, we can hold onto the God who hears us, loves us and promises that He is working for the good of those who love Him.
And even when we cannot understand His answer, we can still trust His heart.
