How do I deal with doubt?
September 1, 2025
Why do I keep falling into the same sin?
September 1, 2025There are times when you can feel close to God, and there are other times when He can seem very far away.
You may still pray, read your Bible and go about your normal life, but something feels different. Perhaps you do not feel God’s presence like you once did, or maybe you have been through something painful and you are wondering where God is. You might even be questioning whether you have done something that has caused Him to leave you.
If you are feeling far from God, you are not alone. Many people go through seasons where their relationship with God feels different from what it once was.
The good news is that feeling far from God does not necessarily mean that God has moved away from you.
Sometimes our feelings change even when God’s character has not changed. There can also be times when sin, distraction, disappointment or simply the difficulties of life affect the way we experience our relationship with Him.
The answer is not to give up.
When you feel far from God, turn toward Him.
Does Feeling Far From God Mean God Has Left Me?
Not necessarily.
One of the first things we need to understand is that our feelings are not always an accurate measure of God’s presence.
There may be days when you feel deeply connected to God and other days when you feel nothing at all. God has not changed simply because your emotions have changed.
Hebrews 13:5 — God Will Never Leave You
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
God’s promise is not based on how strongly we feel His presence.
He promises not to leave His people.
That means you should not automatically assume that God has abandoned you just because you are going through a spiritually dry season.
Why Do I Sometimes Feel Far From God?
There can be many reasons for feeling distant from God.
Sometimes we have allowed sin into our lives and we know that something needs to change. Other times we may be overwhelmed, exhausted, grieving or distracted by everything happening around us.
There can also be seasons where God feels quiet even though we are genuinely seeking Him.
The important thing is to be honest with God about what is happening rather than pretending everything is fine.
Psalm 42:5 — Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.”
The writer of this Psalm was struggling emotionally.
He did not pretend that he felt wonderful. He acknowledged what was happening inside him and then reminded himself to hope in God.
That is something we can learn from.
You can tell God honestly when you feel distant from Him.
Talk to God Honestly
If you feel far from God, start by talking to Him.
You do not need to pray the perfect prayer or use impressive words. Tell Him what you are actually feeling.
You can say, “God, I feel far away from You. I don’t understand why, but I want to be close to You again. Please help me.”
God already knows what is in your heart.
Psalm 62:8 — Pour Out Your Heart Before God
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
You do not have to hide your emotions from God.
If you are angry, tell Him. If you are confused, tell Him. If you are disappointed, tell Him. If you feel numb, tell Him.
Being honest with God is not disrespectful.
It is part of having a genuine relationship with Him.
Go Back to God’s Word
When God feels distant, one of the best things you can do is return to Scripture.
Our feelings change, but God’s Word does not.
Psalm 119:105 — God’s Word Gives Direction
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
You may not always know why you feel spiritually distant, but Scripture gives you somewhere solid to stand.
You do not have to read several chapters every day if you are struggling to concentrate. Start somewhere manageable and actually think about what you are reading.
Read a Psalm.
Read one of the Gospels.
Read a few verses and ask God to help you understand them.
The goal is not to turn Bible reading into another task you feel guilty about completing. It is to spend time listening to what God has already revealed.
Spend Time With God Even When You Do Not Feel Like It
One of the hardest things about spiritual dryness is that you may not feel motivated to pray or read your Bible.
This is where faith becomes important.
We do not only seek God when we feel close to Him. We seek Him because He is God and because we need Him.
Jeremiah 29:13 — Seek God With All Your Heart
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
Sometimes the feelings return after we begin seeking God again, but we should not make feelings the goal.
The goal is God Himself.
You are not trying to manufacture an emotional experience. You are learning to trust Him even when you cannot feel what you wish you could feel.
Ask God to Show You What Is Happening
If you feel distant from God, it can be helpful to ask Him to show you whether there is something in your life that needs to change.
Maybe there is a sin you have been holding onto.
Maybe you have been spending all your time focused on other things.
Maybe you are carrying unforgiveness, bitterness or resentment.
Maybe you have simply become spiritually exhausted.
Psalm 139:23–24 — Search My Heart
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
This is a powerful prayer because it does not assume that we already understand the problem.
We can ask God to show us what we cannot see for ourselves.
If He reveals something that needs to change, do not run away from Him because of it. Bring it into the light and ask Him to help you deal with it.
If You Have Sinned, Confess It to God
Sometimes we feel distant from God because we know there is something between us and Him that we have not dealt with.
If you have sinned, confess it.
Do not spend weeks hiding from God because you feel ashamed.
1 John 1:9 — God Forgives and Cleanses
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God already knows what you have done.
Confession is not about giving God information He does not have. It is about honestly acknowledging our sin and turning back toward Him.
God’s response to genuine repentance is forgiveness.
Repentance Means Turning Back to God
Repentance is not simply feeling guilty about what we have done.
It means turning away from sin and turning back toward God.
Acts 3:19 — Repent and Turn to God
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”
If something in your life is pulling you away from God, you do not have to continue down that path.
Turn around.
It may take time to change certain habits, but the direction of your heart matters. Keep choosing God and keep bringing your struggles to Him.
Do Not Let Shame Keep You Away From God
One of the worst things we can do after sinning is allow shame to convince us that we cannot come back to God.
You may think, “I have messed up too many times.”
Or perhaps you think, “God must be disappointed in me.”
But Scripture tells us to come to God for mercy.
Hebrews 4:16 — Come to the Throne of Grace
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Notice that we are invited to come to the throne of grace.
God does not tell struggling people to stay away until they have fixed themselves.
He tells us to come to Him for mercy and grace.
Remember What God Has Already Done for You
When you feel far from God, it can help to remember what you already know to be true.
God created you.
He loves you.
Jesus died for you.
Christ rose again.
God offers forgiveness.
The Holy Spirit works in believers.
These truths do not become untrue simply because you are having a difficult spiritual season.
Romans 8:38–39 — Nothing Can Separate Us From God’s Love
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Your emotions may tell you that God is far away.
The Gospel tells you that His love is not dependent on your emotional state.
Remember That God Is Near to the Brokenhearted
Sometimes feeling far from God is connected to pain.
When we are hurting, we can wonder why God has allowed something to happen or why He has not intervened in the way we hoped.
That pain can make God feel distant even when He is not.
Psalm 34:18 — God Is Near the Brokenhearted
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
God does not turn away from people simply because they are hurting.
In fact, Scripture repeatedly shows us that He draws near to the brokenhearted.
If you are hurting, you do not have to hide that pain from God.
Bring it to Him.
Do Not Compare Your Relationship With God to Someone Else’s
Sometimes we feel far from God because we look at other Christians and think they seem much closer to Him than we are.
Someone else may pray confidently, talk about hearing from God or seem full of joy while you are struggling to feel anything.
That comparison can make you feel as though something is wrong with you.
Galatians 6:4 — Examine Your Own Work
“But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”
Your relationship with God is not supposed to be measured by comparing yourself with another Christian.
God is working in your life.
Your journey may not look exactly like someone else’s, and that is okay.
Keep Going Even When You Feel Nothing
There may be seasons when you pray and feel nothing.
You may read your Bible and not experience the same excitement you once did.
You may worship and wonder where that sense of closeness went.
Do not assume that this means you should stop seeking God.
2 Corinthians 5:7 — We Walk by Faith
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Faith means trusting God even when we cannot see everything clearly.
Sometimes we have to keep walking even when we cannot feel the same closeness we experienced before.
That does not make your faith fake.
It can actually become an opportunity to learn how to trust God’s character rather than depending entirely on your emotions.
Worship God Even in a Dry Season
Worship is not only something we do when life feels good.
We can worship God because of who He is, even when our circumstances are difficult.
Habakkuk 3:17–18 — Rejoicing Even in Hard Times
“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
Habakkuk was not pretending that everything was fine.
He was looking at difficult circumstances and choosing to trust God anyway.
Sometimes worship is simply saying, “God, I don’t understand what You are doing, but I still trust You.”
Spend Time Around Other Believers
God did not intend for Christians to walk through life completely alone.
When you feel spiritually distant, withdrawing from everyone can sometimes make things even harder.
Hebrews 10:24–25 — Do Not Forsake Gathering Together
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Other believers can encourage you when your own faith feels weak.
This does not mean that every church or every Christian community will be perfect. People are still people, and churches can have problems. However, healthy Christian fellowship can help remind us that we are not meant to carry everything alone.
Remember That God Is Patient With You
You may be frustrated because you thought you would be spiritually stronger by now.
Perhaps you expected yourself to pray more, understand the Bible better or trust God more easily.
Remember that spiritual growth is a process.
Philippians 1:6 — God Continues His Work
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
God is not finished with you.
You may not be where you want to be yet, but that does not mean God is not working.
Sometimes we look back months or years later and realise that God was changing us in ways we could not see at the time.
What If I Feel Like God Is Not Listening?
This can be one of the hardest parts of feeling far from God.
You pray, but it seems as though nothing is happening.
The Bible contains many prayers from people who felt this way.
Psalm 13:1–2 — How Long, O Lord?
“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”
David openly asked God where He was.
Yet the Psalm does not end with David abandoning God.
Psalm 13:5–6 — Trusting God’s Mercy
“But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”
David moved from questioning to trusting.
That is something we can do too.
You can bring your questions to God without walking away from Him.
God Wants You to Draw Near to Him
If you feel far from God, you may be waiting for Him to somehow make the first move.
But Scripture gives us a very simple invitation.
James 4:8 — Draw Near to God
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
The answer to feeling far from God is not to run further away.
Draw near.
Pray.
Open His Word.
Confess what needs to be confessed.
Worship even when you do not feel like it.
Ask Him to reveal what is happening in your heart.
Keep seeking Him.
You Can Come Back to God Today
Perhaps you have been away from God for a long time.
Maybe you used to pray every day, read your Bible regularly and feel close to Him, but somewhere along the way life became overwhelming and your relationship with God slowly became less important.
If that is where you are, you can come back.
You do not need to wait for a special moment.
Joel 2:12–13 — Return to the Lord
“Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.”
God is gracious and merciful.
If you have wandered, turn back toward Him.
What Should I Do When I Feel Far From God?
If you feel far from God, start with something simple.
Talk to Him honestly about how you feel. Open your Bible and spend time in His Word, even if you do not feel particularly motivated. Ask Him to search your heart and show you whether there is anything you need to repent of. If there is, confess it and turn away from it.
At the same time, do not assume that every season of spiritual dryness means you have done something wrong. Sometimes life is simply difficult, and our emotions become exhausted.
Keep praying.
Keep seeking.
Keep trusting.
Keep gathering with other believers.
Keep reminding yourself of what God’s Word says rather than allowing your feelings to tell you who God is.
Psalm 27:14 — Wait on the Lord
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Sometimes getting close to God again does not happen through one dramatic moment.
It happens through many small decisions to keep turning toward Him.
God Has Not Forgotten You
If you are feeling far from God right now, I want you to remember that feeling distant does not mean that God has forgotten you.
He knows where you are.
He knows what you are carrying.
He knows the questions you are asking and the things you have not even been able to put into words.
Isaiah 41:10 — Do Not Fear, God Is With You
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
You do not have to find your way back to God by yourself.
Turn toward Him, and ask Him to help you.
If you have sinned, repent.
If you are hurting, tell Him.
If you are confused, ask Him for wisdom.
If you feel nothing, keep seeking Him anyway.
And if you have simply become distracted by life, begin making space for God again.
The important thing is to keep coming back.
God Is Still There
There may be seasons when you feel close to God and seasons when you feel like you are walking through a spiritual desert.
But God does not change with your emotions.
Malachi 3:6 — God Does Not Change
“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
God is still God when you feel close to Him, and He is still God when you feel far away.
His love has not suddenly disappeared.
His promises have not changed.
His character has not changed.
So if you feel far from God today, do not give up.
Turn toward Him again.
Open your Bible.
Pray honestly.
Confess what needs to be confessed.
Let go of the things that are pulling you away.
And keep walking with Him, even when you cannot feel Him as strongly as you would like.
Sometimes faith is not about feeling God’s presence. Sometimes faith is choosing to trust that He is there because His Word says He is.
And when you keep seeking Him, you may discover that He was closer than you realised all along.
