Can Christians Struggle With Anxiety or Depression?
August 31, 2025If you have heard Christians talk about being “born again,” you may have wondered what they actually mean. Does it mean becoming a better person? Is it something that happens when you become a Christian? And how do you know if you have been born again?
The phrase comes directly from something Jesus said to Nicodemus. Being born again is not about physically starting your life over. Jesus was talking about a spiritual transformation that happens when we come to Him and receive new life through the Spirit.
What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
Being born again means receiving new spiritual life from God.
When we are born physically, we enter the world with a physical life. Jesus explained that we also need spiritual life from God. This new birth is not something we accomplish by simply becoming a nicer person or trying harder to follow religious rules. It is a work God does in us.
John 3:3 — Jesus Says We Must Be Born Again
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Jesus was explaining that entering God’s kingdom requires more than simply knowing about God or following religious traditions.
We need to be spiritually changed.
Why Did Jesus Say We Need to Be Born Again?
Jesus said these words to a man named Nicodemus, who was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus knew the Scriptures and had religious knowledge, yet Jesus told him that he still needed to be born again.
This shows us something important. Knowing about God is not the same as having a relationship with Him.
You can know Bible verses, attend church and understand Christian teaching while still needing to surrender your life to Christ.
John 3:4 — Nicodemus Did Not Understand
“Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”
Nicodemus initially understood Jesus’ words in a physical way.
Jesus was talking about something spiritual.
Being Born Again Is a Spiritual Birth
Jesus explained that the new birth is not another physical birth. It is a work of the Holy Spirit.
John 3:5–6 — Born of Water and the Spirit
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Our physical birth gives us physical life, but Jesus says we need spiritual birth as well.
The Holy Spirit gives new spiritual life to those who come to Christ.
Is Being Born Again the Same as Becoming a Christian?
Yes. In biblical terms, becoming a Christian involves being spiritually made alive through faith in Jesus Christ.
It is not simply deciding to become a better version of yourself. Christianity is about being reconciled to God through Jesus and receiving the new life He gives.
2 Corinthians 5:17 — A New Creation in Christ
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
When you belong to Christ, God begins a new work in your life.
This does not mean that you become perfect overnight. It means that your relationship with God has changed, and He begins transforming you from the inside out.
How Are We Born Again?
We are born again through the work of God and receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Bible teaches that salvation is not something we earn through good works. We cannot make ourselves spiritually alive by trying harder.
Ephesians 2:8–9 — Salvation Is by Grace Through Faith
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Our salvation is God’s gift.
We respond to Him in faith, trusting in Jesus Christ rather than trying to earn our way into God’s favour.
What Does Faith in Jesus Mean?
Faith is more than simply believing that Jesus existed.
The Bible calls us to believe in Jesus, trust Him and confess Him as Lord. Genuine faith changes the direction of our lives because we are choosing to follow Christ.
Romans 10:9–10 — Believe and Confess Christ
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Being born again begins with turning to Jesus in faith.
We recognise that we need Him, believe in Him and place our trust in what He has done for us.
Does Being Born Again Mean You Become Perfect?
No.
This is an important point because some people expect that becoming a Christian means they will never struggle with sin, temptation, doubt or difficult emotions again.
That is not what the Bible teaches.
Being born again begins a new life with God, but we continue to grow. God changes us over time as we learn to follow Him.
Philippians 1:6 — God Continues His Work in Us
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
God does not expect you to have everything figured out on the day you come to Him.
He begins a work in you and continues shaping you as you grow.
What Changes When You Are Born Again?
Being born again changes our relationship with God.
Before coming to Christ, we are separated from God because of sin. Through Jesus, we can be forgiven and reconciled to Him.
Colossians 1:13–14 — We Are Brought Into Christ’s Kingdom
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”
The Christian life is not simply about following a list of rules.
It is about belonging to Christ and allowing Him to change the way we live.
Does the Holy Spirit Have a Role in Being Born Again?
Yes. Jesus specifically connected being born again with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit gives spiritual life and works within believers as they begin their new life with God.
Titus 3:5 — Renewal by the Holy Spirit
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
This reminds us again that we cannot create spiritual life through our own efforts.
God saves us according to His mercy, and His Spirit brings renewal.
What Happens to Our Old Life?
Being born again does not mean you forget everything about your past.
It means your past no longer has to determine who you are.
When you come to Christ, you are forgiven and given a new identity in Him.
Galatians 2:20 — Living a New Life in Christ
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
Your old way of living does not have to remain your future.
Christ begins changing your heart and teaching you how to live differently.
What If I Still Struggle With Sin After Being Born Again?
You may still struggle with sin after becoming a Christian.
Being born again does not mean you will never be tempted or make mistakes again. The difference is that you now belong to Christ and are learning to turn away from sin rather than making peace with it.
1 John 1:8–9 — Christians Still Need God’s Forgiveness
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
When you sin, do not run away from God.
Confess it, repent and turn back to Him.
God’s desire is to transform you, not to leave you trapped in shame.
How Do I Know If I Have Been Born Again?
The Bible gives us signs that God’s Spirit is working in the life of a believer.
You begin to desire God, become aware of sin and want to turn away from it, begin to love what is good and want to follow God’s ways.
You develop a desire to know God’s Word and grow closer to Him.
None of this means you will do these things perfectly. Spiritual growth takes time.
1 John 3:14 — Love for Others
“We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”
A changed heart begins to produce changed desires.
As God works in us, we should increasingly see the evidence of His work in the way we live and treat others.
What Does Repentance Have to Do With Being Born Again?
Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.
When we come to Christ, we are not simply asking Him to forgive our sins while planning to continue living however we want. We are surrendering our lives to Him.
Acts 3:19 — Repent and Turn to God
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”
Repentance does not mean you will never fail again.
It means your heart has changed direction. Instead of wanting to remain separated from God, you want to come back to Him.
Can You Be Born Again Without Changing?
Being born again produces change, although that change may happen gradually.
A person who truly comes to Christ should not remain completely unchanged forever.
The Holy Spirit begins working within us, and we learn to put away our old ways and live according to God’s will.
Galatians 5:22–23 — The Fruit of the Spirit
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
As we grow in Christ, His character should increasingly become visible in our lives.
This growth takes time, and every Christian’s journey looks different, but God is continually working in those who belong to Him.
Is Being Born Again an Emotional Experience?
It can be emotional, but it does not have to be.
Some people have a powerful experience when they come to Christ. Others simply recognise that they need Jesus and quietly place their faith in Him.
Your salvation is not based on how emotional you felt when you became a Christian.
It is based on Christ and your faith in Him.
Romans 5:1 — We Have Peace With God Through Faith
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
You do not need to feel a certain way before you can belong to Christ.
Trust Him.
What Does Being Born Again Mean for Your Future?
Being born again gives us a new relationship with God now and the hope of eternal life with Him.
Jesus did not come simply to make our earthly lives more comfortable. He came to save us from sin and bring us into a relationship with God.
John 3:16 — God’s Gift of Salvation
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God’s love is at the centre of the message of salvation.
He sent Jesus so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life through Him.
How Do I Become Born Again?
If you have realised that you need Jesus, you can come to Him in faith.
You do not need a special ceremony or perfect words, you simply need to genuinely turn to God, confess your need for Him and put your trust in Jesus Christ.
God wants you to know you can always pray and speak to Him honestly.
You might pray something like:
“God, I know that I need You. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again. Please forgive me, change my heart and help me follow You. I put my trust in Jesus and give my life to You. Amen.”
The words themselves are not what saves you. Salvation comes from God’s grace through faith in Jesus.
What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
To be born again means to receive new spiritual life through God.
Jesus explained that we need to be born of the Spirit, and the Bible teaches that this new life comes through God’s grace and our faith in Jesus Christ. It is not something we earn by being good enough or religious enough.
Being born again begins a new relationship with God. It does not mean that you will instantly become perfect or never struggle again. Instead, God begins changing you from the inside out as you learn to follow Him.
John 3:7 — Jesus’ Words About the New Birth
“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
Jesus made it clear that the new birth is necessary.
If you have never given your life to Christ, you can come to Him today. You do not have to fix yourself first. You do not have to become good enough before approaching God.
Come to Him as you are, put your trust in Jesus and allow Him to begin His work in you.
Being born again is not about becoming a perfect person. It is about receiving new life from God and beginning a new life with Him through Jesus Christ.. He is inviting you into a new life with Him today.
