What Does The Bible Say About Tarot Cards
June 5, 2024Have you ever wondered what the Bible really says about psychics?
Maybe you’ve watched a psychic reading and wondered how they could possibly know such personal information. Maybe you’ve heard someone say that a psychic spoke to a loved one who had died. Or perhaps you’ve wondered whether some psychics really have a supernatural gift.
The Bible gives us a very clear answer.
God forbids His people from seeking psychics, mediums, fortune-tellers, diviners, and those who claim to communicate with the dead.
This isn’t something the Bible leaves open for Christians to experiment with.
And there is an important reason why.
The supernatural messages associated with these practices are not coming from God. Scripture warns us about deceiving spirits and demons, and it tells us that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.
So even when a psychic appears to give comforting, accurate or supernatural information, that does not mean the message is from God.
Quick Answer: What Does the Bible Say About Psychics?
The Bible is against psychics and forbids Christians from seeking them.
God specifically warned His people not to consult mediums, spiritists, wizards, diviners or anyone claiming to communicate with the dead.
“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”
— Leviticus 19:31
Deuteronomy gives an even stronger warning:
**“There shall not be found among you any one that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.”**
— Deuteronomy 18:10–12
God doesn’t tell His people to find a trustworthy psychic.
He doesn’t tell us to test which psychics are genuine.
He tells us not to seek them.
Why Are Psychics Against the Bible?
A psychic claims to receive information through supernatural means.
They may claim to communicate with spirits, receive messages from angels, speak with deceased loved ones, see the future or receive special knowledge about someone’s life.
But the Bible tells us that there are deceiving spiritual forces at work in the world.
Paul warned:
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”
— 1 Timothy 4:1
The Bible doesn’t describe these spirits as harmless.
They are seducing spirits.
They deceive.
They lead people away from God.
This is why Christians should never assume that something is good simply because it appears supernatural.
The Bible Shows Us a Spirit Behind Fortune-Telling
One of the clearest examples is found in Acts 16.
Paul and Silas encountered a girl who was making money for her owners through fortune-telling.
But Scripture tells us exactly what was behind it:
“And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.”
— Acts 16:16
Notice what Luke says.
She had a spirit of divination.
This wasn’t presented as a gift from God.
And Paul didn’t try to communicate with the spirit or use the information it provided.
Instead, he commanded the spirit to leave her.
“And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.”
— Acts 16:18
That should make us stop and think.
The Bible gives us an example of supernatural fortune-telling that was connected to a spirit, and the response of a follower of Jesus was to cast the spirit out, not listen to it.
Where Do Psychics Get Their Messages?
This is an important question.
If someone is claiming to receive supernatural messages, Christians need to understand that not every spiritual being is from God.
The Bible teaches that demons are real and that they deceive people.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:12
Psychics may describe what they experience using words such as spirit guide, angel, higher power, energy or even the name of a deceased loved one.
But Christians should not automatically believe that the being communicating with them is who it claims to be.
A demon can deceive.
The Bible tells us that Satan himself can disguise himself as an angel of light:
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
— 2 Corinthians 11:14
If Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, Christians should not assume that a supernatural being is good simply because it appears loving, comforting or angelic.
What If a Psychic Says They Are Speaking to an Angel?
This is one of the reasons psychic practices can be so deceptive.
Someone may say:
“My spirit guide is an angel.”
Or:
“An angel is giving me this message.”
But the Bible tells us that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.
So an appearance of an angel does not automatically mean that the message is from God.
We are not supposed to seek spiritual messages from unknown spirits and then decide whether they sound good.
We are supposed to test everything against the Word of God.
God has already warned us not to seek these sources.
What If a Psychic Says They Are Speaking to a Loved One Who Died?
This can be particularly painful and confusing.
A psychic may tell someone:
“Your mother is here.”
“Your father wants you to know he’s okay.”
“Your grandmother has a message for you.”
For someone who is grieving, hearing something like this can feel incredibly real.
But Christians should not assume that the voice or spirit communicating through a psychic is actually their deceased loved one.
The Bible specifically forbids consulting mediums and seeking communication with the dead.
“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God?”
— Isaiah 8:19
That last question is the answer we need:
“Should not a people seek unto their God?”
If you miss someone who has died, take that grief to God.
You don’t need a psychic to communicate with them.
And you shouldn’t trust a spirit simply because it claims to be someone you loved.
Demons Can Pretend to Be Something They Are Not
This is where we need to take spiritual deception seriously.
The Bible doesn’t teach us that demons are harmless spirits waiting to help us.
It teaches that Satan deceives.
He can disguise himself as an angel of light.
There are deceiving spirits.
There are doctrines of demons.
And there is a spirit of divination associated with fortune-telling in Acts 16.
So when someone opens themselves up to psychic practices, they are opening themselves up to something God has specifically told them to stay away from.
A spirit might present itself as an angel.
It might present itself as a loved one.
It might present itself as a helpful guide.
It might give information that sounds convincing.
But that doesn’t make the spirit trustworthy.
The question isn’t simply, “Was the information accurate?”
The question is, “Does God want me seeking information this way?”
And Scripture says no.
But What If the Psychic Knows Personal Things?
This is where many people become convinced that psychics must be genuine.
They might say:
“The psychic knew my mother’s name.”
“They knew what happened in my family.”
“They knew something that nobody else could have known.”
“How could they possibly know that if there wasn’t something supernatural happening?”
The Bible gives us reason to take supernatural deception seriously.
Acts 16 shows that fortune-telling can be connected with a spirit of divination.
So a Christian shouldn’t automatically assume that every psychic is simply making everything up.
But even if a psychic receives information through a supernatural source, that does not mean the source is God.
The Bible warns us about deceiving spirits.
And this is exactly why Christians should not seek information from them.
What About Psychic Predictions About the Future?
Psychics often claim to know what will happen in the future.
But a psychic is not God.
Demons are not God.
They are not all-knowing.
Only God has perfect knowledge of the future.
So when a psychic predicts something about your future, you should never treat that prediction as though it carries the authority of God’s Word.
A psychic may make a prediction based on information they already have, circumstances they observe, patterns they recognise or information available through spiritual deception.
But that is completely different from God revealing the future.
Don’t give a psychic’s prediction authority over your life.
God alone is the One who knows the future perfectly.
“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”
— Isaiah 46:10
What If a Psychic’s Prediction Comes True?
You might think:
“But what if they actually predicted something that happened?”
That still doesn’t make the practice acceptable to God.
Remember the girl in Acts 16.
The Bible didn’t tell Paul to listen to the spirit because it was giving accurate information.
He cast the spirit out.
That’s important.
Accuracy is not the test of whether something is from God.
The Bible has already told us that God’s people are not to seek divination.
So even if a psychic tells you something that later happens, that isn’t a reason to start trusting them.
Don’t let an accurate prediction pull you further into something God has warned you to avoid.
God Does Not Want You Looking for Answers From Psychics
Think about why people often turn to psychics.
They want answers.
They want to know what is going to happen.
They want reassurance.
They want to know whether a relationship will work.
They want to know whether their family will be okay.
They want to hear from someone they’ve lost.
They want to know what the future holds.
Those are very real desires.
But God doesn’t tell us to satisfy those desires through psychics.
He tells us to seek Him.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.”
— James 1:5
If you need wisdom, ask God.
If you need guidance, pray.
If you’re afraid about the future, trust Him.
If you’re grieving, bring your grief to Him.
You don’t need a psychic.
What About King Saul and the Medium?
King Saul gives us one of the clearest warnings in the Bible.
Saul was afraid and wanted answers about what was going to happen.
Instead of seeking God, he went to a woman who had a familiar spirit.
“Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her.”
— 1 Samuel 28:7
Saul wanted supernatural information.
But he went to the wrong source.
And 1 Chronicles later explains:
**“So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
And enquired not of the Lord.”**
— 1 Chronicles 10:13–14
That is the heart of the issue.
Saul sought counsel from a forbidden spiritual source instead of seeking the Lord.
That is exactly what Christians should avoid.
Does the Bible Say Christians Should Stay Away From Psychics?
Yes.
There isn’t a loophole that says Christians can use psychics as long as they are careful.
There isn’t an exception that says it’s okay if the psychic seems kind.
There isn’t an exception because the psychic says they work with angels.
And there isn’t an exception because they claim to be communicating with a deceased loved one.
God has told His people not to seek these things.
“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”
— Leviticus 19:31
If someone claims to communicate with spirits, tell the future, contact the dead or receive supernatural information, Christians should stay away.
What If I’ve Already Been to a Psychic?
If you’ve already gone to a psychic, don’t stay trapped in fear.
You don’t need another psychic to tell you what the first psychic meant.
You don’t need to find out whether their prediction was accurate.
You don’t need to go back for one final reading.
Instead, turn away from the practice and turn to God.
Confess your sin to Him.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
— 1 John 1:9
Jesus is not waiting for you to become perfect before you come to Him.
If you’ve been involved in something God has forbidden, you can repent and walk away.
What If I Have Psychic or Occult Materials?
If you’ve been involved in psychic or occult practices, don’t keep going back to them.
The book of Acts gives us an example of people who had practised magic and then turned away from it.
“Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men.”
— Acts 19:19
They didn’t hold onto their old practices as something to return to later.
They walked away.
If you have materials that are connected to psychic or occult practices, don’t treat them as something you need to keep “just in case.”
Leave that life behind.
What Should Christians Do Instead of Going to Psychics?
Seek God.
That’s really what this comes down to.
When you’re worried about your future, pray.
When you need wisdom, ask God.
When you’re grieving, bring your pain to Him.
When you’re confused, open His Word.
When you’re afraid, trust Him.
You don’t need to know everything that is going to happen tomorrow.
You need to know the One who already holds tomorrow.
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
— Psalm 56:3
Final Thoughts
The Bible is not neutral about psychics.
God is against divination, mediums, fortune-telling and seeking supernatural guidance from forbidden spiritual sources.
And Scripture gives us a reason to take this seriously.
Acts 16 shows a spirit of divination operating through fortune-telling.
1 Timothy warns about deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.
And 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.
So if a psychic says they are receiving messages from an angel, a spirit guide or a deceased loved one, don’t assume that the spirit is who it claims to be.
A supernatural experience is not automatically a godly experience.
Don’t seek messages from spirits.
Don’t seek communication with the dead.
Don’t seek predictions about your future.
And don’t let an apparently accurate psychic reading convince you that God has given you permission to continue.
God has already told you where to look.
Look to Him.
“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God?”
— Isaiah 8:19
Seek God, not psychics.
