Greed is more than simply wanting money.
It is an unhealthy desire for:
- wealth
- possessions
- success
- power
- or anything else that takes the place of God in our hearts.
Instead of finding satisfaction in God, greed always demands more.
The Bible calls believers to pursue contentment, generosity, and trust in God’s provision.

What the Bible Says About Greed

Jesus warned that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.
Luke 12:15 says:
“Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
Our identity and security should never rest in material things.
Greed Is a Form of Idolatry
The Bible goes even further by describing greed as idolatry.
Colossians 3:5 says:
“Mortify therefore… covetousness, which is idolatry.”
When people place money, success, or possessions above God, those things become idols.
God alone deserves first place in our hearts.

The danger comes when people love money more than they love God.
First Timothy 6:10 says:
“For the love of money is the root of all evil.”
When greed controls a person’s life, it often leads to:
- dishonesty

- and spiritual compromise.
God calls believers to trust Him instead.
Be Content With What God Has Given You
One of the greatest remedies for greed is contentment.
Hebrews 13:5 says:
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have.”
Contentment does not mean lacking ambition or refusing to work hard.
It means trusting that God knows what you need and faithfully provides according to His wisdom.
True contentment comes from Christ rather than possessions.
Practice Generosity
Generosity directly opposes greed.
God blesses His people so they can bless others.
Second Corinthians 9:7 says:
“God loveth a cheerful giver.”
When believers give willingly and joyfully, they demonstrate that their trust is in God rather than money.
Generosity reflects God’s own character.
Store Up Treasure in Heaven
Jesus reminded His followers that earthly wealth is temporary.
Matthew 6:19–20 says:
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth…
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
The greatest investments are those that have eternal value.
Believers honour God by using earthly resources to serve His kingdom and help others.
