The Bible has a lot to say about women, and when you read Scripture from beginning to end, one thing becomes very clear: women matter to God.

Women are not an afterthought in the Bible. They were created by God, made in His image, loved by Him, and given important roles throughout His story. We see women showing courage, wisdom, faith, compassion, strength and obedience, sometimes in circumstances that were incredibly difficult.

Whether you are a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, friend, widow, or single woman, your value does not come from the role you happen to have in life. Your value comes from God.

Quick Answer

The Bible teaches that women are created in the image of God and have dignity, value and purpose. Scripture shows women faithfully following God, caring for others, serving Christ, teaching, supporting ministry, demonstrating courage and being used by God in significant ways.

At the same time, the Bible does not say that a woman’s worth comes from her appearance, marital status, motherhood, career or achievements.

A woman’s deepest identity is found in God and, for the Christian, in Christ.

Genesis 1:27 says:

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

From the very beginning, both men and women are described as being made in God’s image.

Women Were Created in God’s Image

One of the most important truths about women is found right at the beginning of the Bible.

God created humanity in His image, and He created both male and female.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
— Genesis 1:27, KJV

Your value did not begin when someone noticed you.

It did not begin when you became a wife or mother.

It did not begin when you achieved something.

And it certainly does not disappear when you grow older, lose a relationship, change careers, struggle financially, or fail at something.

Your value comes from the God who created you.

That is important because the world can be very loud about what a woman is supposed to look like, accomplish, own or become. God’s Word gives us a much deeper foundation.

God Cares About the Woman You Are Becoming

The Bible certainly cares about our outward actions, but it also places great importance on the condition of our hearts.

Peter writes:

“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
— 1 Peter 3:3–4, KJV

This passage is not saying that women are forbidden from looking after their appearance. The point is that outward appearance should not become the foundation of our worth.

Beauty changes.

Age changes.

Circumstances change.

But godly character has lasting value.

A woman who grows in faith, wisdom, kindness, humility and love is becoming beautiful in a way that cannot be measured by a mirror.

A Woman’s Worth Is Not Her Appearance

We live in a culture that can put enormous pressure on women to look a certain way.

There is always another standard to reach. Another person to compare yourself with. Another reason to feel as though you are not beautiful enough, successful enough, young enough, thin enough or accomplished enough.

But Scripture points us somewhere else.

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”
— Proverbs 31:30, KJV

The Bible does not say beauty has no value at all. It says beauty is temporary.

A woman’s relationship with God is far more important than her appearance.

You don’t have to spend your life trying to become someone else before you can believe that God sees you as valuable.

Women in the Bible Were Strong and Courageous

The Bible gives us many examples of women who demonstrated remarkable courage.

Esther risked her life to approach the king and speak on behalf of her people.

Ruth remained faithful to Naomi when she could have walked away and returned to a more familiar life.

Deborah served as a judge in Israel and encouraged Barak to obey God’s command.

Mary willingly accepted the extraordinary calling God gave her to become the mother of Jesus.

Mary Magdalene faithfully followed Jesus and was among the women who witnessed His crucifixion and resurrection.

Priscilla worked alongside her husband Aquila and helped explain the way of God more accurately to Apollos.

These women were not all living the same kind of life. They came from different circumstances and had different responsibilities, but God was able to work through each of them.

God Can Use Women in Important Ways

Sometimes women can feel as though they have to fit into one particular mould to be valuable to God.

But Scripture gives us a much bigger picture.

Women appear throughout the Bible as wives, mothers, daughters, widows, leaders, servants, disciples, businesswomen and faithful followers of God. They prayed, served, supported ministry, cared for others, taught, showed courage and testified about what God had done.

Luke 8:1–3 gives us an example of women actively supporting Jesus’ ministry:

“And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.”
— Luke 8:1–3, KJV

These women were part of Jesus’ ministry and used what they had to serve Him.

Your circumstances may look completely different from theirs, but the principle remains: God can use your life.

Women Are Called to Follow Christ

The most important calling for a woman is not to fit somebody else’s idea of what a woman should be.

It is to follow God.

Jesus did not call women to live for the approval of the world. He called His followers to love God, believe His Word, love others, serve faithfully and live for His kingdom.

Galatians 3:28 says:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
— Galatians 3:28, KJV

This verse is not saying that men and women are identical in every respect or that every distinction between men and women disappears. It is teaching something incredibly important about our standing in Christ: our gender does not make one believer more valuable than another before God.

Men and women alike need Jesus, and all are saved by grace through faith in Christ.

Men and women alike are called to love God and live faithfully for Him.

The Bible’s Picture of a Godly Woman

Proverbs 31 gives us one of the best-known descriptions of a godly woman in Scripture.

And it is worth noticing how much more there is to this woman than simply being beautiful or being a wife and mother.

She is hardworking, wise, generous, cares for her household, considers the needs of others, makes decisions, works with her hands and she speaks with wisdom.

Proverbs 31:25–26 says:

“Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”
— Proverbs 31:25–26, KJV

That is a beautiful picture.

Strength and honour.

Wisdom and kindness.

Those qualities are valuable whether a woman is raising children, working outside the home, caring for family, serving in ministry, studying, living alone, married, single, young or old.

A Godly Woman Does Not Have to Be Perfect

Sometimes passages about godly women can make us feel like we have another impossible standard to reach.

We read about the Proverbs 31 woman and think, “I could never do all of that.”

But Scripture is not giving you a checklist that you must complete perfectly before God will love you.

The Christian life is about growing.

You will have weaknesses, make mistakes and you will have seasons where you feel strong and seasons where you feel exhausted. There may be times when you struggle with fear, insecurity, anger, grief or uncertainty.

That doesn’t mean God has given up on you.

Bring those things to Him.

Ask Him to help you grow.

A godly woman is not a woman who never struggles. She is a woman who keeps turning toward God.

Women Can Be Wise

Wisdom is one of the qualities Scripture repeatedly praises.

Proverbs 31:26 says:

“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”

Notice that wisdom and kindness are mentioned together.

Being wise doesn’t mean always having the perfect answer. It means learning to think according to God’s truth and allowing that truth to shape the way you speak and live.

A woman can be intelligent and still need wisdom from God.

She can be experienced and still need guidance.

She can be confident and still pray, “Lord, help me know what to do.”

James 1:5 gives this encouragement to every believer:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
— James 1:5, KJV

You are allowed to ask God for wisdom.

Women Can Be Strong Without Becoming Hard

Proverbs 31:25 says:

“Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Biblical strength is not the same thing as never crying, never needing help or pretending that nothing hurts.

Sometimes strength looks like continuing to trust God when you are hurting.

Strength is admitting that you need help.

Sometimes it means setting a healthy boundary.

Strength means forgiving someone without pretending that what they did was acceptable.

Sometimes it means getting back up after you have fallen.

And sometimes strength simply means making it through another difficult day while holding on to God.

Godly strength is not about becoming hard-hearted. It is strength that can exist alongside compassion, humility and love.

Women Can Serve God in Different Seasons

Your life will change.

There may be a season when your main responsibility is caring for children. There may be a season of work, study, marriage, singleness, caring for an ageing parent, serving in church, building something new, recovering from hardship or simply learning how to walk closely with God.

Don’t assume that God can only use you in one particular season.

Your circumstances may change, but you can continue to live faithfully before God.

There is also no biblical requirement that every woman must have the same life.

Marriage is not what gives a woman value.

Motherhood is not what gives a woman value.

A career is not what gives a woman value.

And being single does not make a woman incomplete.

Your relationship with God is more important than any earthly title.

Women and Motherhood

The Bible has many beautiful things to say about motherhood, and Scripture honours women who cared for and raised children faithfully.

But motherhood should never become a measurement of whether a woman is valuable.

Not every woman will become a mother.

Some women are mothers who are struggling, some are grieving children, some long to have children but cannot or some have lost children.

Some have chosen a different path.

And some women are called to care for children in ways that do not involve giving birth to them.

God sees the woman, not simply the role.

Women and Marriage

The Bible has important teaching about marriage, including responsibilities for both husbands and wives.

But a woman’s identity is not ultimately found in whether she has a husband.

A husband cannot give you the value God has already given you.

And marriage does not remove your need for a personal relationship with God.

If you are married, honour God in your marriage or if you are single, honour God in your singleness.

If you are waiting, grieving, divorced, widowed or walking through a difficult relationship, God has not forgotten you.

Your circumstances may be painful, but they do not determine your worth.

Women Who Are Hurting

If you are reading this while feeling rejected, unwanted, overlooked or forgotten, I want you to remember something important.

People can treat you badly without changing what you are worth to God.

Someone else’s rejection does not mean God rejects you.

Someone else’s cruelty does not define you.

A failed relationship does not make you a failure.

A difficult past does not mean God cannot use your future.

Psalm 34:18 says:

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18, KJV

You don’t have to pretend that everything is fine before you come to God.

Bring Him the real you.

Bring Him your questions, grief, fear, disappointment and pain.

Women Can Make a Difference

You don’t have to be famous for your life to matter, you may never stand in front of thousands of people or have a large platform.

You may never receive recognition for the things you do.

But God sees faithfulness that other people don’t see.

He sees the woman who patiently cares for someone who needs her.

God sees the woman who prays for her family.

He sees the woman who encourages someone who is struggling.

God sees the woman who quietly serves.

He sees the woman who chooses kindness when she could respond with bitterness.

God sees the woman who keeps seeking Him even when life is difficult.

None of that is invisible to God.

Bible Verses About Women

Genesis 1:27 — Created in God’s Image

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

Women are created in God’s image and therefore have inherent dignity and value.

Proverbs 31:25 — Strength and Honour

“Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Godly strength is something to be valued, especially when it is joined with honour and faithfulness.

Proverbs 31:26 — Wisdom and Kindness

“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”

A godly woman’s words should be shaped by both wisdom and kindness.

Proverbs 31:30 — The Fear of the Lord

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

Outward beauty is temporary, but a life devoted to God has lasting value.

1 Peter 3:3–4 — Inner Beauty

“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

God cares about the character being formed within us.

Psalm 46:5 — God Is With His People

“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.”

This verse is speaking specifically about the city of God in its context, but it beautifully reminds us of the security found in God’s presence with His people.

Psalm 139:14 — Wonderfully Made

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”

Our existence is not meaningless. God is our Creator.

Galatians 3:28 — One in Christ

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Men and women alike have equal standing in Christ as those who belong to Him.

Luke 1:45 — Mary’s Faith

“And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

Mary’s response to God’s calling reminds us of the beauty of trusting God even when we do not know everything that lies ahead.

Titus 2:3–5 — Women Teaching Women

“The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

This passage shows the importance of older Christian women passing godly wisdom on to younger women.

What Does God Want Women to Know?

If you take away everything else from this article, I hope you remember this:

You were created by God.

You are made in His image.

Your worth is not determined by your appearance, your relationship status, your income, your achievements or other people’s opinions.

You don’t have to compete with every other woman around you.

You don’t have to become someone else before God can use you.

And you don’t have to have a perfect life to faithfully follow Him.

The women we see throughout Scripture were real women living in real circumstances. Some were afraid, faced loss, made mistakes, were overlooked by society or some were placed in situations that required extraordinary courage.

Yet God worked through them.

He can work through you too.

Final Thought

The Bible’s message to women is not that you need to become more impressive before you are valuable.

You already have value because God created you.

The question is what you will do with the life He has given you.

You can seek Him, grow in wisdom, develop godly character, use the gifts He has given you, can serve other people, you can stand firm when life is difficult.

You can learn from your mistakes and keep growing.

And above everything else, you can follow Jesus.

Your life does not have to look like anyone else’s.

God knows you, He sees you, and He is able to use even the ordinary parts of your life for His purposes.
