Bible Verses About Knowing God

Knowing about God and actually knowing God are not necessarily the same thing. You can learn what the Bible says about God, know stories about Him and understand Christian beliefs, yet still need to consider what it means to have a genuine relationship with Him.

The Bible repeatedly calls people to know God. This is more than having information about Him. Knowing God involves trusting Him, seeking Him, listening to His Word, loving Him and allowing your relationship with Him to change the way you live.

God has made Himself known through His creation, through Scripture and ultimately through Jesus Christ. He does not ask us to discover Him through guesswork. He has revealed who He is and has invited us into a relationship with Him.

To know God means more than knowing facts about Him. The Bible describes knowing God as a relationship marked by faith, trust, love, obedience and growing understanding of His character.

We come to know God through Jesus Christ, through His Word, through prayer and through walking with Him. Knowing God is not about becoming perfect. It is about continually drawing closer to Him and allowing Him to transform your life.

God Wants Us to Know Him

God does not hide Himself from humanity. Throughout Scripture, He reveals His character, His will and His purposes.

Jeremiah 9:23–24 — Knowing God Is Worth Boasting About

“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.”

God tells us that knowing Him is more valuable than human wisdom, strength or wealth.

This does not mean that wisdom, strength or possessions are automatically wrong. It means that none of those things compare with knowing the Lord.

Knowing God Comes Through Jesus

The New Testament makes it clear that Jesus Christ is central to knowing God.

John 14:6–7 — Jesus Reveals the Father

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.”

Jesus does not merely teach people about God. He reveals the Father.

If we want to know what God is like, we should look carefully at Jesus—His words, His actions, His compassion, His holiness, His treatment of people and His willingness to give His life for sinners.

Eternal Life Is Knowing God

Jesus connected eternal life with knowing God.

John 17:3 — Eternal Life Is Knowing God

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

This is a remarkable description of eternal life. Jesus does not describe it simply as living forever. He connects eternal life with knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ.

Christianity is therefore not simply about following a list of rules. At its centre is reconciliation with God and a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

Knowing About God Is Different From Knowing God

It is possible to know many facts about someone without having a relationship with them.

You might know where someone lives, what they do for work and what their interests are, but that does not necessarily mean you know them personally.

The same principle can apply to our understanding of God. We can memorise Bible verses and learn Christian theology while still needing to personally respond to God in faith.

This is why Scripture repeatedly speaks about seeking God, trusting Him and walking with Him rather than simply gathering information.

We Know God Through His Word

The Bible is one of the primary ways God has revealed Himself to us.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 — Scripture Teaches Us About God

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

God’s Word teaches us who He is, what He has done, what He desires and how He calls us to live.

If you want to know God better, spending time in Scripture is essential. The Bible is not simply a collection of inspirational sayings. It tells the story of God’s work throughout history and reveals His character and purposes.

We Know God Through Jesus’ Life and Teaching

The Gospels are especially important when we want to understand what God has revealed through Christ.

John 1:18 — Jesus Makes God Known

“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

Jesus came to make the Father known.

When we read about Jesus welcoming sinners, showing compassion to hurting people, confronting hypocrisy, serving others, teaching truth and willingly going to the cross, we are seeing God’s character revealed through the Son.

Knowing God Involves Trust

A relationship with God involves trusting Him, including when we do not understand everything that is happening.

Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust in the Lord

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Trust does not mean that you will always understand what God is doing. There will be circumstances that raise questions you cannot immediately answer.

Knowing God means learning to trust His character even when you do not have every explanation.

Knowing God Involves Seeking Him

The Bible repeatedly encourages people to seek the Lord.

Jeremiah 29:13 — Seek God With Your Whole Heart

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

This verse was originally spoken to the people of Judah during their exile in Babylon, so it should not be separated from that historical context. Yet it reflects a broader biblical truth seen throughout Scripture: God calls His people to seek Him genuinely rather than treating Him as an afterthought.

Seeking God involves turning our attention toward Him, learning His Word, praying, obeying what He has revealed and wanting to know Him more deeply.

Knowing God Changes the Way We Live

The Bible does not present knowing God as something that leaves our lives unchanged.

If we genuinely come to know God, our understanding of His character should begin affecting the way we treat other people and the way we respond to sin.

1 John 2:3–4 — Knowing God and Obedience

“And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

John is not teaching that Christians earn a relationship with God by achieving perfect obedience. Scripture makes clear that salvation is by God’s grace through faith.

Instead, obedience is evidence that our relationship with God is real. If we know Him, we should increasingly desire to live according to His ways.

Knowing God Does Not Mean Being Perfect

This is important because Christians can sometimes believe that struggling with sin means they do not really know God.

Christians still make mistakes. We still have weaknesses, temptations and areas where God is working on us.

Knowing God does not mean reaching a state of sinless perfection. It means that our direction is changing as we grow in Christ.

Philippians 1:6 — God Continues His Work in Us

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Spiritual growth takes time. God continues working in us as we learn to trust Him, obey Him and become more like Christ.

Knowing God Involves Love

Jesus said that loving God is the greatest commandment.

Matthew 22:37–38 — Love God With All Your Heart

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.”

Knowing God is not merely an intellectual exercise. It involves our hearts, minds and lives.

As we learn more about God’s character, our response should increasingly include love, worship, gratitude and a desire to live for Him.

Knowing God Involves Prayer

Prayer is another important part of developing our relationship with God.

Prayer is not simply asking God for things. It is also a way of talking with Him, thanking Him, confessing our sins, asking for wisdom and bringing our concerns before Him.

Philippians 4:6–7 — Bring Everything to God in Prayer

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

As we pray, we learn to depend on God rather than believing we have to carry everything ourselves.

Knowing God Means Learning His Character

The more time we spend reading Scripture, the more we learn about God’s character.

The Bible describes God as holy, righteous, merciful, faithful, loving, just, patient and gracious. We also learn that God does not change according to our circumstances or emotions.

Exodus 34:6–7 — God Reveals His Character

“And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

This passage gives us a glimpse of how God described Himself. He is merciful and gracious, but He is also just.

Knowing God means learning to understand His character as Scripture actually reveals it rather than creating an image of God based only on what we would like Him to be.

We Can Know God Even When We Have Questions

Knowing God does not mean that you will never have questions.

There are difficult passages in Scripture, circumstances we do not understand and prayers that seem unanswered. Faith does not require pretending that those questions do not exist.

We can bring our questions to God while continuing to seek Him.

James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

God is not threatened by sincere questions. We can ask Him for wisdom and continue searching His Word.

Knowing God Takes Time

A relationship develops over time. The same is true of our relationship with God.

You may begin your Christian life knowing very little about Him. As you read Scripture, pray, worship, obey, ask questions and experience God’s faithfulness, your understanding can grow.

You do not need to understand everything before you can begin knowing God.

Start with what He has already revealed. Read about Jesus in the Gospels. Learn what Scripture says about God’s character. Talk to Him honestly in prayer. Ask questions when you do not understand something, and keep seeking Him.

How Can I Get to Know God Better?

If you want to grow in your relationship with God, start by spending regular time in His Word. Read Scripture not simply looking for a verse to make you feel better, but asking what the passage teaches about God, humanity, sin, salvation and the way God wants His people to live.

Pray honestly. You do not need impressive words. Tell God what you are thinking, ask Him for wisdom, confess your sins and thank Him for what He has done.

Pay attention to whether your relationship with God is changing the way you live. Are you becoming more willing to forgive? Is your relationship with God allowing you to trust Him? Are you becoming more compassionate toward others? Are you becoming more aware of sin and more willing to repent?

These things do not earn God’s love. They are part of the transformation that takes place as we walk with Him.

Jeremiah 9:23–24

You do not have to know everything before you can begin. You can start with the Bible, especially the life and teachings of Jesus, and ask God to help you understand what you are reading.

As you continue seeking Him, your understanding can grow. There may still be questions you cannot answer and seasons when God feels distant, but you can continue to seek Him and trust what He has revealed.
