The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ is coming back.
His return is not presented as a metaphor, merely a spiritual idea or something Christians are supposed to ignore because we cannot know exactly when it will happen. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus’ return is presented as a real future event and an important part of Christian hope.
At the same time, Scripture tells us that we do not know the exact day or hour of His return.
This means Christians are called to be ready without trying to predict a date.
The return of Jesus is ultimately a message of hope for those who belong to Him, while Scripture also teaches that His return will bring judgment and accountability.
Quick Answer: Is Jesus Really Coming Back?
Yes. The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ will return. His coming will be visible, powerful and unexpected, and Christians are called to remain watchful and ready.
Jesus Himself taught that He would return.
After His ascension, the angels also told His disciples that the same Jesus who had gone into heaven would come again.
Acts 1:10–11 — Jesus Will Return
“And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
The wording is important.
The angels did not say that someone similar would return.
They said “this same Jesus” would come.
What Does the Bible Say About Jesus Coming Back?
The New Testament repeatedly teaches that Jesus will return.
His return is connected with resurrection, judgment, the gathering of His people and the establishment of His kingdom.
It is therefore not a minor teaching found in only one obscure passage.
The return of Christ is woven throughout the New Testament.
John 14:2–3 — Jesus Promised to Come Again
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Jesus gave this promise to His disciples before His crucifixion.
He told them that He would go away, but He also promised that He would come again.
Will Everyone See Jesus When He Returns?
Scripture describes Jesus’ return as a visible event.
The Bible does not portray His second coming as something that quietly happens without anyone knowing.
Matthew 24:30 — They Will See the Son of Man Coming
“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
Jesus describes His return as something accompanied by power and great glory.
The passage also says that the tribes of the earth will see Him.
Jesus Will Return in Glory
The first coming of Jesus involved humility.
He was born in Bethlehem and lived among ordinary people.
His second coming is described very differently.
Matthew 16:27 — Jesus Will Come in the Glory of His Father
“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”
Jesus connects His return with glory, angels and judgment.
His second coming will reveal His authority in a way that His first coming did not.
When Is Jesus Coming Back?
This is one of the biggest questions people have about the second coming.
The Bible gives us an answer that may frustrate anyone looking for a specific date:
We do not know.
Jesus explicitly said that the exact day and hour are unknown.
Matthew 24:36 — No One Knows the Day or Hour
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”
Jesus did not give His disciples a date to calculate.
Instead, He instructed them to remain ready.
Why Can’t We Know the Exact Time?
God has deliberately not given humanity the exact date of Christ’s return.
That means Christians should be extremely cautious about anyone who claims to have calculated the precise day.
Matthew 24:44 — Be Ready
“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
Jesus’ emphasis is not on figuring out the date.
It is on being prepared.
Jesus Will Come Unexpectedly
The Bible compares the timing of Jesus’ return to a thief arriving unexpectedly.
The comparison is about the unexpected nature of the timing, not about Jesus being dishonest or doing something wrong.
1 Thessalonians 5:2 — The Day of the Lord Comes as a Thief in the Night
“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”
The point is that people will not be able to predict the exact moment.
This is another reason Scripture calls believers to remain spiritually alert.
Will Jesus’ Return Be Powerful?
Yes.
The New Testament describes Jesus descending from heaven with a command, a voice and a trumpet.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 — The Lord Will Descend From Heaven
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”
This is a dramatic description.
Paul does not describe the return of Christ as an insignificant or hidden event.
What Happens to Believers When Jesus Returns?
Paul explains that believers who have died will be raised, followed by believers who are still alive.
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 — Believers Will Be With the Lord
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
Paul ends the passage with an incredibly comforting statement:
“so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
The ultimate hope is not simply escaping the earth.
It is being with Jesus.
Why Does the Return of Jesus Give Christians Hope?
The return of Christ is meant to give believers hope.
Paul actually tells Christians to encourage one another with the teaching about Jesus’ return.
1 Thessalonians 4:18 — Comfort One Another With These Words
“Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
The teaching about Christ’s return was not intended to create constant panic.
For believers, it was intended to provide comfort and hope.
Jesus Will Raise the Dead
The return of Christ is connected with resurrection.
The Bible teaches that death will not have the final victory over those who belong to Christ.
John 6:40 — Jesus Will Raise Believers on the Last Day
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Jesus repeatedly spoke about resurrection at the last day.
Jesus Will Bring Judgment
The return of Jesus is not only about comfort.
Scripture also teaches that His coming will involve judgment.
This is an important part of the biblical teaching that should not be ignored simply because it is uncomfortable.
Matthew 25:31–32 — The Son of Man Will Judge the Nations
“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:”
Jesus describes Himself as the one who will ultimately separate and judge the nations.
Jesus Will Judge With Righteousness
God’s judgment will not be arbitrary or unfair.
Scripture presents Jesus as a righteous judge.
2 Timothy 4:1 — Christ Will Judge the Living and the Dead
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;”
The return of Christ is therefore connected with His authority as Judge.
Will Jesus’ Return Be Good News for Christians?
For those who belong to Christ, the Bible presents His return as something to look forward to.
Titus 2:13 — The Blessed Hope
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
Paul calls the return of Jesus a “blessed hope.”
That phrase is important.
Christians are not merely waiting for the end of the world.
They are waiting for Christ.
Jesus Will Bring Salvation to Those Waiting for Him
The return of Jesus is also connected with the completion of salvation.
Hebrews 9:28 — Christ Will Appear a Second Time
“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
Jesus’ first coming dealt with sin through His sacrifice.
His return is presented as the next great stage in God’s plan.
Christians Are Called to Watch
Jesus repeatedly instructed His followers to remain watchful.
Matthew 24:42 — Watch for the Lord’s Coming
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”
Notice the reason Jesus gives for watching.
It is precisely because you do not know the hour.
If the date were known, constant watchfulness would not be necessary.
Christians Are Called to Stay Awake Spiritually
Jesus also warned His disciples against becoming spiritually careless.
Matthew 24:44 — Be Ready for His Return
“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
Being ready does not mean living in terror.
It means living faithfully.
What Does It Mean to Be Ready for Jesus?
Being ready for Jesus’ return is not about calculating dates or becoming obsessed with every headline.
It means living faithfully before God.
Jesus’ teaching repeatedly connects readiness with how we live.
Matthew 24:46 — Blessed Is the Servant Who Is Faithful
“Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.”
The faithful servant is found doing what he was supposed to be doing.
That gives us a practical picture of Christian readiness.
Should Christians Try to Predict Jesus’ Return?
No.
Jesus specifically warned His followers that the timing would not be known.
Anyone claiming absolute certainty about the exact date is going beyond what Scripture gives us.
Matthew 24:50 — The Master Will Come at an Unknown Time
“The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,”
The repeated biblical message is clear:
Stay ready rather than trying to predict.
What About Signs of Jesus’ Return?
Jesus did provide signs concerning the end times.
These include wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution and false prophets.
However, individual events should not automatically be treated as proof that Jesus is returning on a particular date.
Matthew 24:6 — Do Not Be Troubled
“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”
Jesus Himself warned His followers not to assume that every troubling event meant the end had immediately arrived.
False Christs Will Appear
Jesus also warned that people would make false claims concerning the Messiah.
Matthew 24:24 — Beware of False Christs and False Prophets
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
This is one reason Christians should remain grounded in Scripture rather than following every new end-times prediction.
Jesus’ Return Will Not Be Something People Can Secretly Control
Jesus’ teaching describes His return as unmistakable.
Matthew 24:27 — His Coming Will Be Like Lightning
“For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
Jesus uses an image that communicates suddenness and visibility.
His return will not depend on humanity recognising a secret timetable.
Jesus Will Be King
The return of Jesus is connected with His reign as King.
Revelation 19:16 — King of Kings and Lord of Lords
“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Jesus’ return is therefore not simply the return of a teacher.
He returns as King.
Jesus Will Establish His Kingdom
The Bible speaks repeatedly about Christ’s kingdom and His authority.
Revelation 11:15 — The Kingdoms of This World Become Christ’s
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
The ultimate future described in Scripture is not chaos without purpose.
God’s kingdom triumphs.
Christ reigns.
Jesus Will Defeat His Enemies
Scripture presents Christ’s return as a decisive victory.
Revelation 19:11 — Jesus Is the Faithful and True
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”
The imagery is powerful.
Jesus returns as a righteous King and Judge.
Jesus Will Make All Things New
The biblical story ultimately moves beyond judgment toward the restoration of creation.
Revelation 21:1–4 — God Will Make All Things New
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
This gives Christians a much bigger picture of what they are ultimately hoping for.
The story does not end with Jesus returning.
It moves toward God’s ultimate restoration.
Will Jesus Really Come Back?
Yes.
The testimony of Scripture is consistent.
Jesus promised to return.
The angels confirmed it.
The apostles taught it.
The book of Revelation describes it.
Christians throughout history have therefore looked forward to the return of Christ as part of the hope of the Gospel.
Revelation 22:12 — Jesus Says He Is Coming Quickly
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
Jesus Himself speaks in the closing chapters of Scripture.
His message is still one of expectation.
He is coming.
What Should Christians Do While Waiting for Jesus?
The Bible does not tell Christians to stop living ordinary lives while waiting for Christ.
Instead, we are called to live faithfully.
That means loving God, loving others, obeying His Word, sharing the Gospel and remaining spiritually alert.
1 Peter 4:7–8 — Be Sober and Watch Unto Prayer
“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”
Peter connects awareness of the end with prayer and love.
That is very different from living in constant panic.
How Should We Respond If We Are Afraid of Jesus’ Return?
If the thought of Jesus returning makes you afraid, the answer is not to obsess over predictions.
The better response is to turn toward God.
Jesus’ return should cause us to examine our lives, repent where necessary and place our trust in Him.
1 John 4:17–18 — Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
The Christian response to judgment is ultimately grounded in God’s love and the work of Christ.

Here are some of the clearest passages about the return of Jesus.
Acts 1:11 — Jesus Will Return
“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
John 14:3 — Jesus Promised to Come Again
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Jesus Will Come With Power and Glory – Matthew 24:30
“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

What Is the Most Important Thing to Know About Jesus’ Return?
The most important thing is not knowing when Jesus will return.
It is knowing who Jesus is and being ready to meet Him.
Scripture does not give us permission to calculate a date that Jesus said we cannot know.
Instead, it calls us to faithfulness.
Matthew 24:46 — Be Found Faithful
“Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.”
The goal is not fear.
The goal is faithfulness.
Final Thought
The Bible leaves very little doubt about the central message:
Jesus Christ is coming back.
We do not know the exact day.
We do not know the exact hour.
Christians may disagree about some of the details surrounding the end times and the order in which particular events will occur. However, the fundamental teaching that Jesus will return is repeatedly affirmed throughout Scripture.
His return will be glorious.
His coming will be unexpected.
The dead will be raised.
Believers will be with Him.
Judgment will take place.
And ultimately, God’s purposes will be fulfilled.
For Christians, this should not produce a life consumed by fear.
It should produce a life of hope, holiness, faithfulness and expectation.
2 Peter 3:13–14 — Look for the New Heavens and New Earth
“Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”
The return of Jesus is not simply a prophecy about the end of something.
It is a promise of what God is bringing about.
So while we wait, we do not need to know every detail of the timeline.
We need to remain faithful to Christ.
And when Jesus says, “Surely I come quickly,” Scripture gives us the response:
Revelation 22:20 — Come, Lord Jesus
“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
