Does God Care About My Suffering?
November 11, 2024
Has God Left Me?
November 11, 2024When you are sick, in pain, exhausted, or dealing with something that seems impossible to fix, one of the most natural questions to ask is, “Can God heal me?”
The Bible gives us a clear answer: Yes, God can heal. Scripture repeatedly shows God’s power over sickness, disease, injury, and suffering. Jesus healed the sick throughout His earthly ministry, and the Bible teaches us to bring our needs to God in prayer.
But there is an important truth we also need to understand.
God’s ability to heal does not mean that every person will experience physical healing in this present life. Sometimes God heals immediately and sometimes healing comes through medical treatment, time, rest, support, or rehabilitation. Sometimes a person lives with an illness or disability for many years despite sincere prayer. And ultimately, for those who belong to Christ, complete freedom from sickness and death belongs to the future resurrection and the restoration God promises.
So if you are asking God to heal you and you have not been healed yet, do not assume that God has rejected you or that you simply did not have enough faith.
The Bible gives us room to pray boldly for healing while also trusting God when His answer is different from what we hoped.
Quick Answer
Yes, God can heal you. Healing is clearly within God’s power, and Scripture gives many examples of Him healing people.
We should absolutely bring sickness and suffering to God in prayer. At the same time, the Bible does not teach that healing is guaranteed in this life or that a person’s faith determines whether God must perform a miracle.
Sometimes God heals miraculously and sometimes He works through ordinary means, including doctors and treatment. Sometimes He gives strength to endure an ongoing condition. And one day, Christ will completely defeat sickness, suffering, and death.
Our hope is therefore not only in being healed from a particular condition. Our ultimate hope is in God Himself.
God Has the Power to Heal
The Bible consistently presents God as the Creator who has authority over His creation.
Exodus 15:26 — “I Am the LORD That Healeth Thee”
“And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”
God revealed Himself as the One who heals.
This does not mean that every sickness is automatically removed whenever we ask. The rest of Scripture makes it clear that God’s purposes and timing are not always what we expect.
But it does establish something important: healing is not beyond God’s power.
If you are facing something that seems impossible, you are not asking a God who lacks the ability to help.
Jesus Healed Many People
The ministry of Jesus gives us some of the clearest examples of God’s compassion toward people who were suffering.
Matthew 4:23–24 — Jesus Healed the Sick
“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.”
Jesus did not treat suffering people as inconveniences.
He showed compassion and exercised authority over sickness.
The Gospels record Jesus healing blind people, people who could not walk, people with skin diseases, people who were suffering from severe illness, and even people who had died.
These miracles demonstrated His authority and pointed people toward His identity.
Jesus Cares About People Who Are Suffering
Healing in the Gospels was not simply about demonstrating supernatural power.
Jesus repeatedly showed compassion toward suffering people.
Matthew 14:14 — Jesus Had Compassion
“And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.”
This gives us an important picture of Jesus.
He saw people who were suffering, and He had compassion.
If you are sick, you do not have to wonder whether your pain matters to God.
Your illness does not make you a burden to Him.
Jesus Is Able to Heal
There are many individual accounts of Jesus healing people who came to Him in faith.
Matthew 8:2–3 — “I Will; Be Thou Clean”
“And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”
Notice the man’s words:
“Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.”
He believed Jesus had the power to heal. He also recognised that healing was ultimately under Jesus’ authority.
That is a helpful pattern for our own prayers.
We can come to God with confidence that He can heal while still submitting the outcome to His wisdom.
Does God Always Heal?
This is where we need to be careful.
The Bible gives us many examples of miraculous healing, but it does not teach that every Christian will be physically healed whenever they pray.
One of the clearest examples is the apostle Paul.
2 Corinthians 12:7–9 — “My Grace Is Sufficient for Thee”
“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul prayed repeatedly for his suffering to be removed.
The answer he received was not the physical relief he requested.
Instead, God promised sufficient grace.
This is important because it shows us that an unanswered prayer for physical healing is not proof that God has abandoned someone.
Paul was an apostle who loved and served Christ, yet he experienced ongoing suffering.
Does Lack of Healing Mean I Don’t Have Enough Faith?
No.
This is an important distinction.
The Gospels sometimes connect healing with faith, and Christians should certainly trust God. But Scripture does not give us a formula saying that if someone is not healed, their faith must be inadequate.
Paul is an obvious example.
He prayed sincerely. He had faith in Christ. Yet his particular request for his suffering to be removed was not granted in the way he wanted.
We therefore should never look at someone who remains sick and conclude, “You just need more faith.”
That can place an enormous burden on someone who is already suffering.
Faith means trusting God—not controlling God.
You Can Pray Boldly for Healing
Recognising God’s sovereignty does not mean we should stop asking Him for healing.
The Bible encourages us to bring our needs to God.
James 5:14–15 — Prayer for the Sick
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
James encourages believers to pray for those who are sick.
Prayer is not pointless.
We can ask God boldly and specifically for healing while leaving the outcome in His hands.
A prayer might be as simple as:
“Lord, You know what I am going through. I believe You have the power to heal me. Please heal my body, give wisdom to those treating me, and give me strength while I wait. Help me trust You regardless of what happens.”
God Can Work Through Doctors and Medicine
Sometimes people mistakenly think that seeking medical treatment meansemember that His love surrounds you, that He cares deeply for your well-being, and that His healing power is always available. In His time and way, He is faithful to bring you the healing you seek.
