August 13, 2024Sex is something the Bible talks about much more than people sometimes realise. It isn’t treated as dirty or unimportant, but neither is it treated as something that exists simply for entertainment or personal pleasure.
God created sex, and He created it with a purpose. The Bible connects sexual intimacy with marriage, faithfulness, love, commitment and becoming “one flesh.”
At the same time, the Bible is very clear about sexual sin. So if you’re wondering what God actually says about sex, rather than what our culture says about it, Scripture gives us a clear place to start.
Quick Answer
The Bible teaches that sex is a good gift from God, but God designed sexual intimacy for marriage between a man and a woman.
Sex outside marriage, adultery and other forms of sexual immorality are consistently treated as sin in Scripture. Christians are called to honour God with their bodies and pursue sexual purity.
But if you’ve sinned sexually, that does not mean God is finished with you. Sexual sin can have serious consequences, but there is forgiveness and restoration through Jesus Christ when we genuinely repent and turn to Him.
The Bible’s teaching about sex is not about God wanting to take away something good. It is about following the design of the One who created it.
God Created Sex
Sex was not invented by the world.
God created it.
We see this right at the beginning of the Bible when God creates man and woman and establishes marriage.
Genesis 2:24
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
The Bible presents becoming “one flesh” as part of God’s design for marriage.
Sexual intimacy is therefore not something God accidentally allowed or something Christians need to be embarrassed about. It is part of God’s good creation.
The problem isn’t sex itself.
The problem comes when we take something God created and use it outside the boundaries He gave us.
Sex Is Designed for Marriage
The Bible consistently connects sexual intimacy with marriage.
Hebrews 13:4
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
This verse gives us an important distinction.
The marriage bed is described as honourable and undefiled, while sexual immorality and adultery are condemned.
So when people ask, “Is sex itself sinful?” the answer is no.
Sex within the marriage covenant is not sinful. It is something God created and can be a beautiful part of marriage.
The Bible’s concern is not that people enjoy sex.
It is that sexual intimacy is taken outside the covenant God designed for it.
The Bible Says to Flee Sexual Immorality
The New Testament doesn’t tell Christians to simply manage sexual temptation.
It tells us to flee from sexual immorality.
1 Corinthians 6:18–20
“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
That is strong language.
Paul doesn’t say, “See how close you can get to sin without technically crossing the line.”
He says, “Flee.”
There are times when the wisest response to sexual temptation is to get away from it rather than trying to prove how strong you are.
Sexual Purity Is God’s Will
God’s desire for Christians is not simply that they avoid consequences.
He wants us to live in holiness.
1 Thessalonians 4:3–5
“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God.”
Sexual purity is part of our sanctification.
Following Christ affects what we do with our bodies, our relationships and our sexuality.
This is why Christianity cannot separate faith from the way we live.
Sex Outside Marriage
The Bible uses the word “fornication” to describe sexual immorality, including sexual relations outside marriage.
1 Corinthians 6:9–11
“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
There is something incredibly important at the end of this passage.
Paul says, “And such were some of you.”
In other words, some of the Christians receiving this letter had lived in sexual sin.
Their past did not have to remain their identity.
They had been washed, sanctified and justified through Jesus Christ.
That is the hope of the Gospel.
What About Sex Before Marriage?
The Bible does not present premarital sex as God’s design.
Sexual intimacy belongs within marriage.
That may sound very different from what our culture teaches. Today, sex is often presented as something people can casually share if both people want it.
But Christians are called to follow God’s Word rather than simply adopting whatever the culture around us considers normal.
1 Corinthians 7:2
“Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”
Paul connects marriage with the proper place for sexual intimacy.
If you’re dating someone and you’re wondering whether sex before marriage is okay because you love each other, the Bible’s answer isn’t based on how strong your feelings are.
Love does matter.
But love doesn’t change God’s boundaries.
What About Adultery?
Adultery is also clearly condemned in Scripture.
Exodus 20:14
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
Jesus went even deeper when He taught about the heart behind sexual sin.
Matthew 5:27–28
“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
Jesus shows us that sexual purity isn’t only about what our bodies do.
Our hearts and minds matter too.
This doesn’t mean that noticing someone is attractive is automatically sinful. Attraction itself is not the same thing as deliberately entertaining lust.
Jesus is addressing the intentional cultivation of sexual desire toward someone who is not one’s spouse.
What About Pornography?
The Bible doesn’t use the modern word “pornography,” but its teaching about lust, sexual purity and what we allow into our hearts gives Christians important principles to follow.
Jesus said:
“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
Pornography deliberately encourages sexual desire outside the relationship God designed for it.
It can also turn people into objects for sexual gratification rather than treating them as human beings made in God’s image.
For a Christian, the question isn’t simply, “Can I watch this without getting caught?”
The better question is, “Does this honour God?”
Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
What we repeatedly put before our eyes and minds matters.
What About Lust?
Sexual attraction is not automatically sinful.
God created men and women with the capacity to experience sexual attraction. Temptation itself is not the same thing as sin.
But deliberately feeding lust is different.
Jesus warned about lust because what we allow to grow in our hearts eventually affects the way we live.
This is why sexual purity involves more than simply controlling physical behaviour.
It also involves learning to guard our thoughts, our eyes and our imagination.
What About Masturbation?
The Bible does not directly mention masturbation by name, so we should be careful not to claim that Scripture gives a verse specifically saying, “Masturbation is a sin.”
However, that doesn’t mean Christians should ignore the biblical principles surrounding it.
If masturbation involves pornography, deliberate lust, fantasising sexually about another person, or feeding desires that Scripture tells us to control, those things should be taken seriously.
Christians should ask honestly what is happening in their hearts and minds rather than looking only for a technical rule.
Galatians 5:16
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
The goal isn’t simply to find the smallest possible list of things we can technically get away with.
The goal is to honour Christ.
Sex Within Marriage Is Good
It is important not to turn an article about sexual purity into an article that makes sex sound dirty.
The Bible doesn’t do that.
Within marriage, sexual intimacy is presented positively.
Proverbs 5:18–19
“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”
This passage is openly positive about sexual desire within marriage.
God created marital intimacy to include affection, pleasure and mutual delight.
Christian marriage is not supposed to be cold or ashamed of sexual intimacy.
Sex Is About More Than Physical Pleasure
The Bible describes marriage as a covenant, not simply a romantic arrangement.
Sex within marriage is connected with becoming one flesh.
That means sex involves more than bodies.
It involves intimacy, vulnerability, trust and commitment.
This is one reason casual sex can cause pain. The physical act can be separated from the commitment and covenant God intended to surround it.
God’s boundaries are not random.
They reflect what He created sex to be.
Sex Is Not a Measure of Your Worth
Our culture can make people feel as though their sexual experience determines their value.
It doesn’t.
You are not more valuable because you are sexually experienced, you are not less valuable because you are a virgin and you are not more desirable because someone wants to sleep with you.
And you are not worthless because you have made sexual mistakes.
Your worth comes from God.
Genesis 1:27
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
Your body and your sexuality matter, but they do not determine your entire identity.
What If I’ve Already Had Sex Outside Marriage?
This is where I really want to be careful, because some people reading this may be carrying a lot of shame.
Maybe you had sex before you became a Christian, maybe you’ve slept with someone you weren’t married to, maybe you’ve committed adultery, maybe you’ve been involved in pornography or another form of sexual sin or made decisions you deeply regret.
The answer isn’t to pretend those things didn’t happen.
The answer is repentance and grace.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God’s forgiveness is real.
If you have sinned, confess it to God. Turn away from the sin and turn toward Christ.
Don’t allow shame to convince you that you have to stay trapped in your past.
Forgiveness Doesn’t Mean Sin Doesn’t Matter
Grace doesn’t mean sexual sin is unimportant.
Sin can have consequences.
Sex can create emotional attachments. Adultery can destroy marriages. Sexual decisions can affect families and relationships. Pornography can become deeply destructive. Sexual sin can also leave people carrying guilt, confusion or wounds for years.
So we shouldn’t minimise it.
But we also shouldn’t believe that our worst mistake is stronger than Jesus.
Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”
If you have genuinely repented and placed your faith in Christ, you don’t have to spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for something Jesus has forgiven.
Repentance means turning around.
It means you don’t continue deliberately walking toward the same sin while calling it grace.
But it also means you don’t stay chained to shame after you’ve turned to Christ.
What If You’re Struggling With Sexual Sin?
Some Christians feel trapped in a cycle.
They sin, they feel guilty and they promise God they’ll never do it again.
Then they fall again.
Then the shame gets worse.
If that’s you, don’t give up.
Take the struggle seriously, but don’t believe that repeated failure means you should stop trying to obey God.
Look honestly at what leads you into temptation.
Maybe it’s certain websites, social media, conversations, situations, relationships, pornography, being alone late at night, or deliberately allowing your thoughts to go somewhere you know they shouldn’t.
You may need to change your environment, establish boundaries, confess your struggle to a trustworthy mature Christian, or seek professional help if the behaviour has become compulsive.
And above all, keep coming back to Christ.
God Wants You to Honour Him With Your Body
1 Corinthians 6:19–20
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Your body matters to God.
That means sexual choices matter too.
Christian sexual purity isn’t about being terrified of your body or ashamed of sexuality.
It is about recognising that your body belongs to God and asking, “How can I honour Him with this?”
What Does the Bible Say About Sex?
Here are some of the key Bible passages about sex, marriage and sexual purity.
Genesis 2:24
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
God’s design for marriage involves becoming one flesh.
Exodus 20:14
“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
Adultery is clearly condemned.
Proverbs 5:18–19

Marital sexual intimacy is presented as something to enjoy.
Matthew 5:27–28

Jesus teaches that sexual purity involves the heart, not only physical behaviour.
1 Corinthians 6:18

Christians are called to actively turn away from sexual immorality.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20
“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you…”
We are called to honour God with our bodies.
1 Thessalonians 4:3–4
“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication…”
Sexual purity is part of God’s will for His people.
Hebrews 13:4

God honours marriage and calls His people to sexual faithfulness.
2 Timothy 2:22
“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace…”
We are told not only what to run away from, but what to run toward.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
There is forgiveness for those who confess and turn to God.
What Should You Do If You’re Being Sexually Tempted?
Don’t wait until you’re right on the edge of giving in before you decide what you’re going to do.
Make wise choices beforehand.
Guard what you watch.
Be careful about the situations you repeatedly put yourself in.
Don’t deliberately feed thoughts that you know are leading you toward sin.
If you’re dating, establish boundaries before you’re caught up in the moment.
And when temptation comes, pray.
1 Corinthians 10:13
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able…”
God is faithful.
You don’t have to believe that temptation automatically means you’re going to fall.
Sometimes the way out is as simple as leaving the room, turning off the phone, ending the conversation, blocking the account or walking away from the situation.
Flee means flee.
Sex and Christianity
Being a Christian doesn’t mean pretending you don’t have sexual desires.
It means learning to bring those desires under the Lordship of Christ.
You may still experience attraction, temptation and you may still struggle.
But you don’t have to let every desire control you.
Galatians 5:24–25
“And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
Following Jesus affects every part of our lives, including our sexuality.
God’s Design Is Not About Shame
If you’ve grown up hearing Christianity discussed in a way that made sex sound disgusting or shameful, I want you to see the difference between biblical purity and shame.
Biblical purity says, “God created sex, and it is good within His design.”
Shame says, “Sex is dirty, and there is something wrong with you for having sexual desires.”
Those are not the same message.
God created the human body, marriage and sexual intimacy.
But He also gave us boundaries because He knows what He created and knows what is good for us.
His commands are not there because He hates our pleasure.
They are there because He is God.
Final Encouragement
The Bible’s teaching about sex is actually much bigger than a list of things you can and cannot do.
It is about learning to trust God’s wisdom.
God created sex, so we don’t have to be embarrassed about the fact that it exists.
But because He created it, we also need to respect the boundaries He has given us.
Sex is designed for marriage.
Adultery is sin.
Sexual immorality is sin.
Lust matters.
What we do with our bodies matters.
But if you’ve failed sexually, don’t run away from God.
Run toward Him.
Repent.
Ask for forgiveness.
Make changes where changes are needed.
And keep walking with Christ.
Your past does not have to be the end of your story.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Jesus offers forgiveness, transformation and a new beginning.
You don’t have to follow the world’s definition of sexuality.
You can trust God’s design, honour Him with your body, and learn to live in the freedom that comes from following Him.
