What the Bible Says About Family
The family was God’s idea.
Before governments, churches, or nations existed, God created the family as the foundation of society.
Genesis 2:24 says:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Marriage became the foundation from which families would grow.
God designed families to provide:
- love
- support
- instruction
- protection
- and encouragement.
Although every family is affected by sin, God’s design remains good.
Love Should Be the Foundation
The Bible teaches that love should shape every family relationship.
Colossians 3:14 says:
“And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”
Love is more than an emotion.
Biblical love chooses to:
- forgive
- serve
- encourage
- and remain faithful.
When family members practice this kind of love, relationships become stronger and healthier.
Parents Have a Responsibility
God gives parents an important responsibility.
Children are not only to be cared for physically but also guided spiritually.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says:
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…”
Parents are called to teach their children about God through:
- conversation
- example
- instruction
- and daily life.
Faith is not meant to be limited to church services.
It should be lived out in the home.
Children Are Called to Honour Their Parents
The Bible gives responsibilities to children as well.
Exodus 20:12 says:
“Honour thy father and thy mother…”
Honouring parents includes:
- showing respect
- listening to wise instruction
- expressing gratitude
- and treating them with kindness.
This command remains important throughout life.
Forgiveness Strengthens Families
Every family experiences conflict because every family includes imperfect people.
Without forgiveness, bitterness can grow.
Ephesians 4:32 says:
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Forgiveness does not always remove the consequences of wrongdoing.
However, it creates opportunities for healing and restoration where repentance and reconciliation are possible.
God Can Heal Broken Families
Many people come from families marked by:
- divorce
- addiction
- abuse
- conflict
- or separation.
The Bible does not ignore these realities.
Instead, it points people toward the hope found in God.
Although earthly families may fail, God remains faithful.
He is able to bring healing, wisdom, comfort, and restoration as we trust Him and follow His ways.
