Bible Verses about Sin
August 30, 2024Being young can be an exciting time, but it can also be confusing. There are so many decisions to make, so many voices telling you who you should be, and so much pressure to figure out what you’re going to do with your life.
The Bible has a lot to say about youth. It doesn’t treat young people as though they have to wait until they’re older before their lives can have meaning. God knows young people, cares about them and calls them to seek Him, grow in wisdom and live faithfully right where they are.
If you’re young and wondering whether God can use your life, the answer is yes. You don’t have to wait until you’re older, more experienced or have everything figured out before you start following Him.
Quick Answer
The Bible encourages young people to seek God, listen to His Word, grow in wisdom, live with purity, choose their friendships carefully and be an example to others.
One of the clearest verses about youth is 1 Timothy 4:12:
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
Your age does not make you unimportant to God. You can know Him, serve Him, make wise choices and encourage other people while you are young.
The Bible also reminds young people that youth is temporary, which makes it important to use this season well. Rather than simply following the crowd or waiting for life to begin later, you can start building your relationship with God now.
You Are Not Too Young to Follow God
Sometimes young people feel as though they aren’t old enough to really understand their faith or do anything meaningful for God.
But Scripture gives us a different picture.
Paul specifically encouraged Timothy not to allow his youth to become a reason for others to disregard him.
1 Timothy 4:12
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
Timothy was young, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t be an example.
Notice what Paul tells him to focus on. His words, his conduct, his love, his faith and his purity were what mattered.
That is still a wonderful reminder for young people today.
You don’t have to be the oldest person in the room to have an influence. You can show kindness. You can stand up for what is right. You can encourage someone who is struggling. You can choose not to follow the crowd. You can take your faith seriously.
You can live for God now.
Remember Your Creator While You Are Young
One of the clearest passages about youth is found in Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 12:1
“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”
The writer isn’t telling young people to waste their youth because they will have time to seek God later.
Quite the opposite.
He says to remember your Creator now.
There is something valuable about developing a relationship with God while you’re young rather than continually telling yourself that you’ll get serious about faith someday.
You don’t know exactly what life will bring. You don’t know what opportunities, challenges, relationships or responsibilities will come your way.
But you can begin with God.
God’s Word Can Guide Young People
Young people have plenty of decisions to make. Friendships, relationships, education, work, social pressure and questions about the future can all become overwhelming.
The Bible gives us wisdom for navigating life.
Psalm 119:9
“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”
God’s Word gives us something solid to stand on when the world around us is constantly changing.
That doesn’t mean the Bible will give you a specific answer to every decision you have to make. But it gives you principles for living, helps you understand God’s character and teaches you how to recognise what is right and what is wrong.
When you don’t know what to do, start by looking at what God has already said.
Youth Is a Time to Grow in Wisdom
Being young isn’t about already knowing everything.
It’s a time to learn.
It’s a time to grow.
It’s a time to make mistakes, learn from them and develop wisdom.
The Bible repeatedly encourages us to pursue wisdom rather than simply doing whatever feels right in the moment.
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
You don’t have to have your entire future worked out.
You can trust God one step at a time.
That doesn’t mean every decision will be easy or that God promises to reveal your entire future to you. It means you can seek His wisdom rather than believing you have to figure everything out alone.
Choose Your Friends Wisely
Friendships become especially important during youth because the people around us can have a significant influence on the choices we make.
The Bible doesn’t tell us to isolate ourselves from everyone who doesn’t share our faith, but it does warn us that our close relationships can influence our character.
Proverbs 13:20
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
The people you spend a lot of time with can encourage you toward good things or pull you toward things that aren’t good for you.
Choose friends who respect you, encourage you, tell you the truth and don’t pressure you into doing things you know are wrong.
And remember that being a good friend matters too.
You don’t only need godly people around you. You can also be the kind of friend who helps others grow.
Don’t Follow the Crowd
One of the hardest parts of being young can be the pressure to fit in.
You may know something is wrong but feel like everyone else is doing it.
You may worry that saying no will make you look strange.
You may be tempted to change who you are just so other people will accept you.
The Bible gives us a different way to live.
Romans 12:2
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Following God sometimes means being willing to stand apart from the crowd.
You don’t have to copy everyone else to have value.
You don’t need other people’s approval to know that your life matters.
Youth Can Be a Time of Strength
The Bible recognises that youth can bring physical strength and energy.
Proverbs 20:29
“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.”
Different stages of life have different strengths.
Young people may have energy, enthusiasm, opportunities and time ahead of them. Older people have experience and wisdom that come from years of living.
The Bible doesn’t tell us to look down on either stage.
Instead, there is something beautiful about different generations learning from and supporting one another.
Enjoy Your Youth, But Remember God
The Bible doesn’t teach that being young is something you should simply endure until adulthood.
There is room for joy.
There is room for friendship.
There is room for enjoying life.
Ecclesiastes says:
Ecclesiastes 11:9
“Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.”
This is an important balance.
God isn’t against young people enjoying their lives.
But freedom doesn’t mean that our choices don’t matter.
We are still accountable to God for how we live.
You can enjoy your youth while still taking your relationship with God seriously.
Don’t Let Anyone Look Down on You Because of Your Age
Sometimes young people are dismissed simply because they’re young.
People may assume they don’t know anything.
They may refuse to listen to them.
They may think they have nothing valuable to contribute.
But 1 Timothy 4:12 shows that youth doesn’t automatically make someone’s faith or character unimportant.
The answer isn’t to become arrogant or demand that everyone listen to you.
Instead, let your life speak.
Be an example in the way you talk, the way you treat people, the way you handle temptation, the way you love others and the way you live out your faith.
Character gives credibility to your words.
Young People Can Serve God
You don’t have to wait until you have a career, a family or a certain amount of life experience before you can serve God.
There are many ways young people can serve.
You can encourage someone.
You can pray for someone.
You can help someone who is struggling.
You can volunteer.
You can share what you have learned from God’s Word.
You can use your gifts to bless other people.
You can simply be someone who consistently chooses to do what is right.
Serving God isn’t about having an impressive platform.
Often it looks like ordinary faithfulness.
God Can Work Through Young People
The Bible contains many examples of young people being part of God’s purposes.
David was young when he faced Goliath.
Samuel heard God calling him while he was still a child.
Timothy served alongside Paul while still being young enough that his age was something people noticed.
Mary was a young woman when God chose her to become the mother of Jesus.
Daniel and his friends remained faithful to God while they were young men living in a foreign culture.
These stories don’t mean that every young person will have the same experience or that God promises everyone a dramatic calling.
They do show us something important.
Being young does not put you outside God’s purposes.
Your Age Does Not Determine Your Worth
It can be easy for young people to compare themselves with others.
You might look at someone who seems more talented, more attractive, more successful or more popular and wonder what you have to offer.
But your value doesn’t come from being better than somebody else.
You were created by God.
Your worth isn’t determined by how many people like you, how successful you become, what you look like or how much attention you receive.
Psalm 139:13–14
“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
God knows you.
Your life matters to Him.
You don’t have to become someone else before you are worth loving.
Be Careful With Temptation
Youth can also be a season when you face strong temptations.
That doesn’t mean young people are uniquely sinful. Temptation is part of living in a fallen world, and people of every age can struggle with sin.
But learning how to deal with temptation early can help shape the direction of your life.
Paul told Timothy:
2 Timothy 2:22
“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
Notice that Paul doesn’t only say what Timothy should flee.
He also tells him what to pursue.
Righteousness.
Faith.
Love.
Peace.
Following God isn’t simply about making a list of things you aren’t allowed to do. It’s about becoming the kind of person who wants to live in a way that honours Him.
Don’t Be Afraid of Your Future
One of the biggest concerns young people can have is the future.
What am I going to do?
Will I make the right decisions?
Will I find the right career?
Will I have a family?
Where will I live?
What if I make the wrong choice?
Those questions can become overwhelming.
The Bible doesn’t promise that God will reveal every detail of your future ahead of time. But it does teach us to trust Him.
Psalm 37:5
“Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
You don’t need to know everything that is going to happen before you can take your next step.
Seek God.
Use wisdom.
Listen to good advice.
Pray.
Study His Word.
Make responsible decisions.
And trust Him with what you cannot see yet.
Learn From Older People
Although the Bible strongly encourages young people, it also recognises the value of wisdom that comes with age.
Young people don’t have to figure everything out by themselves.
There is something valuable about listening to people who have walked through life before you.
Proverbs 19:20
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
Find trustworthy people who love God and genuinely want the best for you.
Ask questions.
Listen.
Learn from their mistakes as well as your own.
You don’t have to reject wisdom simply because it comes from someone older than you.
Don’t Waste Your Youth
There is nothing wrong with enjoying your youth.
But your youth is also an opportunity that you won’t have forever.
The choices you make now can shape habits, relationships and patterns that continue into adulthood.
That doesn’t mean you have to be terrified of making one wrong decision. God is able to work with us even when we make mistakes.
It simply means your choices matter.
Use this season to learn.
Use it to grow.
Use it to build a strong foundation in Christ.
Use your energy to do things that matter.
And don’t keep telling yourself that you’ll start following God seriously later.
You can start now.
