The Bible contains clear warnings about seeking supernatural knowledge or spiritual guidance through psychics, mediums, divination and other occult practices.

The Bible records supernatural events, but that does not mean every supernatural claim or spiritual practice is from God.

The important question for Christians is not simply, “Are psychics real?”

The more important biblical question is:

“Does God want His people seeking spiritual guidance from psychics?”

According to Scripture, the answer is no.

The Bible repeatedly instructs God’s people to seek Him for wisdom, guidance and truth rather than turning to mediums, spiritists, divination or other forbidden spiritual practices.

The Bible forbids God’s people from seeking psychics, mediums, divination and communication with spirits as a source of supernatural knowledge or guidance.

Deuteronomy 18:10–12 — God Warns Against Divination and Mediums

“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”

This is one of the clearest passages in the Bible on the subject.

God specifically warns His people against practices involving divination, familiar spirits, witchcraft, sorcery and necromancy.

Modern psychic practices can take different forms, but when someone is seeking supernatural knowledge, spiritual guidance or communication with spirits through these means, Scripture’s warnings are directly relevant.

What Is a Psychic According to the Bible?

The modern word “psychic” does not appear in the Bible in the same way that we use it today.

Instead, Scripture uses terms such as:

• divination
• familiar spirits
• mediums
• spiritists
• sorcery
• witchcraft
• necromancy

A modern psychic may claim to communicate with deceased people, receive messages from spirits, predict the future, reveal hidden information or provide supernatural guidance.

The Bible addresses these kinds of practices through its warnings against divination and consulting spiritual sources outside of God.

Leviticus 19:31 — Do Not Turn to Mediums or Spiritists

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”

Notice the instruction:

“Neither seek after wizards.”

The issue is not merely whether the person is telling the truth.

God tells His people not to seek them out.

Does the Bible Say Psychics Are Real?

This question requires some care.

The Bible does not say that every person who claims to be a psychic is genuine, nor does it say that every person is necessarily pretending.

Some people may deliberately deceive others.

Others may sincerely believe that they are receiving supernatural information.

Scripture also teaches that there is a spiritual realm and warns that spiritual deception is real.

Therefore, Christians should not assume that an unusual spiritual experience must be from God simply because it appears supernatural.

1 John 4:1 — Test the Spirits

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

The Bible does not tell Christians to accept every spiritual experience.

It tells them to test the spirits.

But even more importantly, Scripture already gives God’s people a clear instruction about divination and consulting mediums:

God’s people are not to seek these practices.

Are All Psychics Fraudulent?

A psychic could be deliberately deceiving people.

A person could also sincerely believe that their abilities are genuine.

The important point is that Christians are not instructed to experiment with occult practices to find out whether they work.

Ephesians 5:11 — Have No Fellowship With Darkness

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

The Christian response is not to investigate occult practices out of curiosity.

It is to remain separate from practices that Scripture warns against.

What Is Divination?

Divination is the attempt to obtain hidden or supernatural knowledge through spiritual or occult means.

This can involve attempts to discover:

• what will happen in the future
• hidden information
• spiritual messages
• guidance from supernatural beings
• information about deceased people

The Bible repeatedly warns God’s people against this kind of practice.

Deuteronomy 18:14 — Israel Was Told Not to Practise Divination

“For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.”

The contrast is clear.

Other nations sought supernatural knowledge through divination.

God told Israel not to do the same.

Why Does God Forbid Psychics?

One reason Scripture gives is that God wants His people to seek Him for guidance rather than attempting to obtain supernatural knowledge through forbidden sources.

Isaiah 8:19 — Should People Not Seek Their God?

“And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”

This verse asks a powerful question:

“Should not a people seek unto their God?”

Instead of seeking supernatural answers from forbidden sources, God’s people are directed back toward God Himself.

What Does the Bible Say About Talking to the Dead?

The Bible specifically warns against consulting the dead through mediums and spiritists.

Deuteronomy 18:11 — Consulting the Dead Is Forbidden

“Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.”

A necromancer in the biblical context was someone who sought to communicate with the dead.

The Bible does not encourage God’s people to attempt to establish contact with deceased relatives.

Instead, Scripture directs people toward God.

What About Saul and the Witch of Endor?

One of the most interesting biblical accounts involving communication with the dead is the story of King Saul and the woman at Endor.

Saul had previously removed mediums and spiritists from the land, but later sought out a woman who practised such things.

1 Samuel 28:7 — Saul Seeks a Medium

“Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman at Endor.”

Saul wanted information about the future because he was afraid.

Instead of seeking God faithfully, he turned to a forbidden spiritual practice.

1 Samuel 28:8 — Saul Consults the Woman

“And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.”

This account is sometimes used to argue that the Bible proves psychics can communicate with the dead.

However, the passage should not be used to encourage Christians to seek mediums.

Saul’s decision to consult the medium was part of his rebellion against God’s instructions.

1 Chronicles 10:13–14 — Saul Sought a Medium Instead of God

“So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

And enquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.”

This is one of the strongest passages in Scripture on the subject.

Saul’s problem was not merely that he received bad advice.

Scripture specifically says that he asked counsel from a familiar spirit instead of enquiring of the Lord.

That is the fundamental issue.

What Can Christians Learn From Saul?

Saul was frightened and wanted answers.

Instead of trusting God, he looked for supernatural information elsewhere.

This is one reason psychic readings can seem appealing to people today.

Someone may seek a psychic because they are:

• grieving
• frightened about the future
• confused about a relationship
• desperate for direction
• worried about finances
• struggling with uncertainty
• wanting to communicate with someone who has died

These feelings are understandable.

But the Bible’s answer is not to seek supernatural guidance from a psychic.

It is to seek God.

Psalm 32:8 — God Promises to Guide His People

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

God does not tell His people to find a psychic to discover their future.

He tells them to trust Him.

What Should Christians Do When They Need Guidance?

The Bible gives Christians a completely different approach to seeking answers.

Instead of visiting a psychic, Christians are encouraged to:

• pray
• seek God’s wisdom
• study Scripture
• ask mature believers for biblical counsel
• trust God
• follow God’s revealed truth

James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

This is a beautiful alternative to seeking a psychic.

If you need wisdom, ask God.

You do not need to find someone claiming supernatural abilities to tell you what God wants for your life.

Can God Give People Supernatural Knowledge?

Yes.

The Bible contains many examples of God revealing information supernaturally.

God spoke to prophets.

God gave dreams and visions.

God revealed things to His servants.

The important distinction is where the revelation comes from.

The Bible does not teach that supernatural revelation itself is automatically evil.

It teaches that God’s people must not seek supernatural knowledge through forbidden sources.

Hebrews 1:1–2 — God Has Spoken Through His Son

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;”

God is capable of communicating with people.

But that does not mean Christians should seek supernatural messages through psychics.

The source matters.

What Is the Difference Between a Prophet and a Psychic?

A biblical prophet did not simply decide to become someone who could predict the future.

A prophet was called and commissioned by God.

A psychic, by contrast, claims to provide supernatural information through methods that Scripture warns God’s people against.

The Bible therefore does not tell Christians:

“Find a psychic who can give you accurate information.”

It tells God’s people to seek God and His truth.

Jeremiah 23:16 — Do Not Listen to False Prophets

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.”

Even people claiming spiritual authority must be tested.

A person saying, “God told me this,” is not automatically speaking for God.

What About Psychic Predictions That Come True?

This can be one of the most confusing questions.

Someone might say:

“But a psychic told me something that came true. Doesn’t that prove they have a supernatural gift?”

Not necessarily.

A prediction could be coincidence, an educated guess, information obtained beforehand, deliberately vague, manipulated after the fact, or potentially connected to spiritual deception.

Christians do not need to determine exactly which explanation applies to every individual case before obeying Scripture.

The Bible already tells God’s people not to seek divination or consult forbidden spiritual sources.

Deuteronomy 13:1–3 — A Sign Alone Does Not Prove a Message Is From God

“If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,

And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;

Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

This passage is extremely important.

Even when something supernatural appears to happen, that does not automatically mean the source should be trusted.

Christians are called to judge spiritual claims according to God’s truth, not simply by whether a prediction appears to come true.

Can Psychics Tell You Your Future?

The Bible does not encourage Christians to seek knowledge of the future through divination.

God knows the future.

Human beings do not need to obtain secret knowledge through occult practices.

Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust God With Your Path

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Instead of trying to uncover every detail of the future, Christians are called to trust God with it.

You may not know what tomorrow holds.

But you can know the One who holds tomorrow.

What If You Are Afraid of the Future?

Fear about the future is one reason people may turn to psychics.

They want certainty.

They want someone to tell them whether their relationship will work, whether they will become wealthy, whether they will get a particular job, whether something bad will happen or what their future holds.

But the Bible repeatedly calls believers to trust God rather than attempt to uncover the future through forbidden practices.

Matthew 6:34 — Do Not Worry About Tomorrow

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

God does not promise that we will know everything about tomorrow.

He promises that He will be with us.

What If You Are Grieving Someone Who Has Died?

Grief can make the idea of visiting a medium especially tempting.

Someone may desperately want to hear from a deceased parent, child, spouse, friend or other loved one.

The desire to see or hear from someone you have lost is understandable.

But Scripture does not direct grieving people toward mediums.

Instead, it directs them toward God.

Psalm 34:18 — God Is Near the Brokenhearted

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

If you are grieving, you do not need a psychic to tell you that God sees your pain.

God Himself is near to the brokenhearted.

What If a Psychic Says They Have a Message From a Loved One?

The Bible’s warning about mediums still applies.

Even if the message sounds comforting, Christians should not seek or participate in communication with the dead through a medium.

The desire for comfort is real.

But the source of that comfort matters.

Isaiah 8:20 — Return to God’s Word

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

The Christian standard is God’s revealed truth, not whatever message happens to provide emotional reassurance.

What About Tarot Cards, Astrology and Other Practices?

Psychics are not the only spiritual practices the Bible warns Christians about.

Depending on how they are used, practices such as tarot readings, fortune telling, astrology for spiritual guidance, spirit communication, witchcraft and divination can fall within the kinds of practices Scripture warns against.

The important question is whether a person is seeking supernatural knowledge or spiritual guidance through a source other than God.

Galatians 5:19–21 — Witchcraft Is Among the Works of the Flesh

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Scripture consistently places occult practices in opposition to a life devoted to God.

What If You Have Already Seen a Psychic?

If you have visited a psychic before, you do not need to live in terror.

You can turn away from the practice and turn toward God.

The Bible offers forgiveness to those who confess their sins and turn to Him.

1 John 1:9 — God Forgives Those Who Confess

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Your past does not mean you are beyond God’s mercy.

If you have participated in psychic readings, tarot, mediumship, divination or other occult practices, the biblical response is not to remain trapped in fear or shame.

Confess it to God, turn away from it, and seek Him instead.

What If You Are Curious About Psychics?

Curiosity is not a reason to ignore God’s warnings.

You do not need to experiment with something spiritually dangerous simply to discover whether it works.

Ephesians 5:15–16 — Walk Carefully

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Christians are called to walk carefully and wisely.

That means taking God’s warnings seriously even when we do not completely understand everything happening in the spiritual realm.

What Does the Bible Say About Seeking Spiritual Guidance?

The Bible consistently points God’s people toward God Himself.

Psalm 119:105 — God’s Word Gives Direction

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

When you need direction, begin with God’s Word.

When you need wisdom, pray.

When you are afraid, trust Him.

When you are grieving, bring your pain to Him.

When you are uncertain about the future, place the future in His hands.

You do not need a psychic to tell you what God has already instructed you to seek from Him.
