Why do I feel guilty even after I’ve repented?

How Do I Pray When I Don’t Know What to Say?
September 1, 2025Have you ever prayed for something over and over again and wondered why God has not answered?
Maybe you have prayed for healing, for your family, for your finances, for a relationship, for direction or for something you desperately need. You have asked God, waited, prayed again and still seem to be in the same place.
When this happens, it is easy to start wondering, “Does God hear me?”
You may even begin to think that God has forgotten you or that you have done something wrong.
But an unanswered prayer does not mean God has abandoned you.
The Bible shows us that God hears His people, but it also shows us that His answer does not always look the way we expect. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes we have to wait. Sometimes God says no because what we are asking for is not His will. There are also times when sin, wrong motives or a lack of faith can affect our prayers.
Understanding this can help us keep trusting God even when we do not understand what He is doing.
God Does Hear Our Prayers
When you pray, God is not ignoring you.
The Bible repeatedly shows us that God listens to those who call on Him. He knows what you are asking for, He knows what you are going through and He knows what you need even before you ask.
Jeremiah 29:12 — God Says He Will Listen
“Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.”
God wants His people to call on Him.
So if you have been praying and you have not seen an answer yet, do not assume that God did not hear you.
Sometimes hearing and answering are two different things.
A parent can hear their child’s request and still decide that the answer needs to be different from what the child wants.
God sees much more than we do.
Sometimes God’s Answer Is “Not Yet”
One of the hardest answers from God can be waiting.
We often want God to act immediately because we can see the problem right in front of us. God, however, sees the whole picture.
There may be things He is doing that you cannot see yet.
There may be things He is preparing you for.
There may be circumstances that need to change first.
Or there may simply be a timing that God knows is right even though you do not understand it.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 — There Is a Time for Everything
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”
Waiting does not necessarily mean God has said no.
Sometimes it simply means not yet.
God Does Not Always Give Us What We Ask For
This can be difficult to accept, but prayer is not about getting God to give us everything we want.
We can ask God for anything.
We can tell Him exactly what we hope will happen.
But God is still God.
He knows what we do not know, and His wisdom is greater than ours.
Isaiah 55:8–9 — God’s Ways Are Higher Than Ours
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Sometimes we may pray for something that we are completely convinced is right for us, only to discover later that God had a reason for not giving it to us.
We may not understand that reason immediately.
Sometimes we may never understand it fully in this life.
But trusting God means believing that He sees what we cannot see.
Sometimes God Says No
We do not always like the word no, especially when we have prayed with all our heart.
But a loving God does not have to give us everything we ask for.
Even Jesus experienced this when He prayed before His crucifixion.
Matthew 26:39 — Jesus Surrendered to the Father’s Will
“And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
Jesus asked for the suffering to be removed, yet He surrendered Himself to the Father’s will.
That teaches us something important about prayer.
We are allowed to ask.
We are allowed to tell God what we want.
We are allowed to ask Him to change a situation.
But we also have to be willing to trust Him with the answer.
God May Be Doing Something We Cannot See
Sometimes we look at an unanswered prayer and think nothing is happening.
But not seeing something does not mean nothing is happening.
God can be working behind the scenes in ways we do not understand.
He may be changing circumstances, preparing another person, changing our own heart or leading us somewhere we would never have gone on our own.
This is why faith is so important.
Faith means trusting God even when we cannot see the whole picture.
2 Corinthians 5:7 — We Walk by Faith
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
You may not be able to see what God is doing right now.
That does not mean He is doing nothing.
God Can Use the Waiting to Grow Us
Sometimes the waiting itself becomes part of what God uses to change us.
When everything happens exactly when we want it to, we do not always learn patience, perseverance or deeper trust.
Waiting can be difficult, but it can also draw us closer to God.
Romans 5:3–5 — Suffering Produces Perseverance
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
God can use difficult seasons to develop something in us that we could not have developed in the same way without going through them.
That does not mean God enjoys watching us suffer.
It means He can take something painful and use it for a greater purpose.
Sometimes We Need to Look at What We Are Asking For
The Bible also tells us that our motives matter when we pray.
We can ask God for something while our hearts are focused entirely on ourselves.
That does not mean every prayer needs to be perfect before God will hear it. We are human, and we often come to God with mixed motives.
But Scripture does warn us about asking with selfish intentions.
James 4:2–3 — Wrong Motives Can Affect Prayer
“Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
This is something worth honestly asking ourselves when we pray.
“God, am I asking for this because it is genuinely good, or because I simply want what I want?”
Prayer is not about trying to control God.
It is about bringing our desires to Him and allowing Him to shape our hearts according to His will.
Unconfessed Sin Can Affect Our Prayers
The Bible also teaches that deliberately holding onto sin can affect our relationship with God.
This does not mean that you have to become perfect before God will listen to you.
If that were the case, none of us could pray.
We all sin.
The issue is whether we are willing to acknowledge our sin and turn toward God or whether we are deliberately choosing to hold onto it while refusing to repent.
Psalm 66:18 — Cherished Sin Can Hinder Prayer
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:”
God wants honesty from us.
If there is something in your life that you know is wrong, you can bring it to God instead of hiding from Him.
Confess it.
Ask for forgiveness.
Ask Him to help you change.
What If God Has Not Answered Because I Have Not Prayed Correctly?
Sometimes we can become obsessed with finding the perfect prayer.
We wonder whether we used the right words, prayed for long enough or had enough faith.
But prayer is not a formula that forces God to act.
Jesus did not teach His disciples to use magical words.
He taught them to come to the Father.
Matthew 6:7–8 — God Knows What You Need
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”
God already knows what you need.
You do not have to convince Him to care.
You do not have to find the perfect combination of words.
Come honestly.
What If I Have Prayed With Faith?
You may be thinking, “But I have prayed with faith. Why hasn’t God answered?”
This is a really important question.
Having faith does not mean believing that God must give us exactly what we ask for.
Faith means trusting God Himself.
We can believe that God is able to heal and still trust Him if healing does not happen.
We can believe that God can change a situation while still trusting Him if the situation takes a different direction.
We can believe that God can provide while still trusting Him during a season of waiting.
Our faith is ultimately in God, not in getting the particular outcome we want.
Paul Prayed and God Said No
The apostle Paul gives us a powerful example of this.
Paul asked God three times to remove what he called a “thorn in the flesh.”
God did not give Paul the answer he wanted.
Instead, God told him that His grace was sufficient.
2 Corinthians 12:8–9 — God’s Grace Is Sufficient
“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul prayed.
God heard him.
But God did not remove the problem.
Instead, God gave Paul grace to live through it.
That is important because sometimes we assume that if God has not removed something, He must not be listening.
Paul’s experience shows that God can answer prayer in a completely different way from what we expected.
Sometimes God Gives Strength Instead of Removing the Problem
We often pray, “God, take this away.”
Sometimes God does.
But sometimes His answer is, “I will be with you through it.”
That can be difficult because we naturally want the pain to end.
Yet God can give us strength, peace, wisdom and endurance while we are still walking through the situation.
Philippians 4:13 — Christ Gives Strength
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
This verse is not saying that God will give us everything we want.
It is about learning to live with strength from Christ in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.
God can strengthen you even when the situation has not changed.
What If God Seems Completely Silent?
There may be seasons when you pray and hear nothing.
You read your Bible.
You pray again.
You wait.
Still nothing seems to happen.
That can be one of the hardest parts of faith.
But God’s silence is not proof that He has abandoned you.
Psalm 34:18 — God Is Close to the Brokenhearted
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
If you are hurting because you feel like God is silent, you can tell Him that.
You do not have to pretend you are okay.
You can pray, “God, I don’t understand why You haven’t answered me. I still trust You, but I am struggling.”
That is an honest prayer.
Keep Praying Even When You Are Waiting
One of the worst things we can do when God seems silent is give up completely.
Keep talking to Him.
Keep seeking Him.
Keep reading His Word.
Keep bringing your requests before Him.
Jesus taught His followers to keep praying and not lose heart.
Luke 18:1 — Do Not Give Up in Prayer
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”
You may not see the answer today.
You may not see it tomorrow.
But that does not mean you should stop seeking God.
Look for What God May Be Teaching You
When we are waiting for an answer, it is natural to keep asking, “God, when will You fix this?”
There is nothing wrong with asking that.
But another question can sometimes help us see the situation differently:
“God, what are You doing in me while I am waiting?”
Maybe God is teaching you patience.
Maybe He is teaching you to trust Him.
Maybe He is showing you something about yourself.
Maybe He is leading you in a completely different direction.
Maybe He is using this season to bring you closer to Him.
We may not understand the purpose immediately, but we can still ask God to use the situation for His glory.
God Is Still Good When He Says No
One of the hardest things about unanswered prayer is learning that God’s goodness cannot be measured by whether He gives us what we ask for.
If God only felt good when He said yes, our faith would always depend on circumstances.
But God is good because of who He is.
He is faithful.
He is loving.
He is wise.
He is trustworthy.
Psalm 100:5 — The Lord Is Good
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
God’s goodness does not disappear when His answer disappoints us.
You can be disappointed with what is happening and still trust God’s character.
What Should I Do When God Doesn’t Answer My Prayer?
If you are waiting for an answer right now, keep coming to God.
Be honest with Him about how you feel. Ask Him to show you if there is anything in your life that needs to change, but do not automatically assume that unanswered prayer means you have done something wrong.
Keep reading Scripture because God’s Word gives us truth when our feelings are uncertain.
Keep praying, even when you do not know what to say.
Ask God for wisdom rather than only asking Him to change the circumstances.
And most importantly, keep trusting who God is.
Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust God Even When You Do Not Understand
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
You may not understand what God is doing.
You do not have to.
Trusting God does not mean having all the answers.
It means believing that He does.
What If My Prayer Is Never Answered the Way I Want?
This is perhaps the hardest part.
Sometimes we wait for an answer that does not come in the way we hoped.
A person may not be healed.
A relationship may not be restored.
A door may remain closed.
A situation may not change.
When that happens, it is okay to grieve.
Faith does not mean pretending that disappointment does not hurt.
But even when God does not give us the answer we wanted, we can still hold onto Him.
Paul learned that God’s grace was sufficient even when his thorn was not removed.
Jesus showed us how to surrender our own desires to the Father’s will.
And Scripture continually reminds us that God remains faithful.
God Has Not Forgotten You
If you have been praying for something for a long time, please do not assume that God has forgotten you.
He sees you.
He knows what you are carrying.
He knows how long you have been waiting.
He knows the prayers you have prayed over and over again.
Psalm 27:13–14 — Wait for the Lord
“I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Waiting is hard.
But waiting does not mean you are forgotten.
Sometimes faith means continuing to trust God before you can see the answer.
Why Doesn’t God Answer My Prayers?
There is not always one simple reason why a prayer seems unanswered.
Sometimes God’s answer is yes.
Sometimes it is not yet.
Sometimes the answer is no because what we are asking for is not God’s will.
Sometimes God is using the waiting to grow our faith, character and dependence on Him.
And Scripture also tells us to examine our hearts because wrong motives, cherished sin and disobedience can affect our prayers.
But an unanswered prayer does not automatically mean God does not love you.
It does not automatically mean you do not have enough faith.
And it does not mean God has forgotten you.
God sees the whole picture when we can only see one small part.
So keep praying.
Keep seeking Him.
Keep reading His Word.
Keep trusting His character even when you do not understand His timing.
And when you cannot understand why God has not answered, you can always come back to this:
God is still God.
He is still good.
He still sees you.
And He is still with you.
Romans 8:28 — God Can Work Through What We Cannot Understand
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
That does not mean that everything that happens is good.
It means God can work through even the things that hurt us and bring them into His greater purpose.
You may not see what He is doing yet.
But you can keep walking with Him while you wait.
Sometimes the answer to your prayer is not simply a changed circumstance.
Sometimes God is changing you, strengthening your faith, drawing you closer to Him and preparing you for something you cannot see yet.
So don’t give up praying.
Keep bringing your heart to God. Keep trusting Him. And keep believing that even when you cannot see what He is doing, He has not stopped working.
