Can I Hear God?

There are many times when we wish God would simply speak to us and tell us what to do.

We might be facing a difficult decision, wondering whether we are on the right path, or desperately needing direction about something happening in our lives. Sometimes we may even ask, “God, are You trying to tell me something? How do I know if I can actually hear Your voice?”

The Bible shows us that God does speak to His people. However, learning to recognise God’s voice does not usually mean waiting for an audible voice to speak from heaven. God has given us His Word, His Holy Spirit and a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

The most important thing to remember is that God will never speak something that contradicts His Word. Scripture gives us the foundation for recognising what is from God and what is simply our own thoughts, emotions or desires.

Does God Still Speak Today?

God has always communicated with humanity in different ways.

There are times in the Bible when God spoke directly to people, including Moses, Samuel and Paul. He also spoke through prophets and, most importantly, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1–2 — God Has Spoken Through His Son

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;”

God has spoken to humanity in many different ways throughout history, but Jesus is the fullest revelation of who God is.

Today, we have the written Word of God that tells us about Jesus, His teachings, His character and His work.

When we want to know what God is like or what He wants from us, we should begin with what He has already revealed in Scripture.

The Bible Is the Main Way We Hear From God

If you want to hear God, one of the best places to begin is the Bible.

God has given us His Word so that we can know Him, understand His truth and learn how He wants us to live. We do not have to wonder whether Scripture is from God because the Bible tells us that it is God-breathed.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 — Scripture Is God-Breathed

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

The Bible teaches us, corrects us and helps us understand what is right.

This is why Scripture should always come before our feelings, impressions or personal experiences.

If we believe God has spoken something to us but that message goes against Scripture, we should reject the message rather than try to change the meaning of Scripture.

Hebrews 4:12 — God’s Word Is Living and Powerful

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Sometimes a Bible verse can speak directly into something we are going through.

We may read a passage we have read many times before and suddenly understand something we had never noticed. Scripture can correct us, encourage us, convict us and give us wisdom for situations we are facing.

That is one of the ways God uses His Word to speak into our lives.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Understand God’s Truth

When someone puts their faith in Jesus, they are not left to figure everything out alone.

God gives believers the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach His followers and remind them of His words.

John 14:26 — The Holy Spirit Teaches and Reminds Us

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s truth and reminds us of what Jesus has taught.

This does not mean that every thought that comes into our mind is from the Holy Spirit. We still need to test what we believe we are hearing against Scripture.

The Holy Spirit will never lead us away from God’s Word because He is not going to contradict the very Word of God He inspired.

Can God Put Something on Your Heart?

There are times when Christians describe feeling that God has put something on their heart.

Perhaps a particular Bible verse keeps coming to mind. Maybe you suddenly feel strongly that you should encourage someone, pray for someone or take a certain step of obedience.

God can certainly guide His people.

However, we should be careful about automatically calling every strong feeling or thought “God speaking.” We have our own emotions, desires, fears and ideas, and sometimes we can mistake those things for God’s voice.

This is why Scripture and prayer are so important.

If you believe God may be leading you in a certain direction, take the matter to Him and compare it with His Word. Ask whether what you are sensing agrees with God’s character and what Scripture teaches.

We Can Listen to God in Prayer

Prayer is not only about talking to God.

It is also about spending time with Him, seeking His will and being willing to listen.

Psalm 46:10 — “Be Still, and Know That I Am God”

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

There is value in slowing down and becoming quiet before God.

Our lives can become so busy that we rarely stop to pray, read Scripture or simply sit with God.

Being still does not mean that every quiet thought is automatically a message from God. It means making room in our lives to seek Him and allowing Him to work in us through His Word and Spirit.

God Can Use Other People to Guide Us

God can also use other Christians to give us wisdom and encouragement.

Sometimes another person will say something that gives us clarity about a situation we have been praying about. They may remind us of a biblical truth we had forgotten or give us wise advice when we are struggling to see something clearly.

Proverbs 15:22 — Wise Counsel Is Valuable

“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”

This is one reason it is important to have wise and godly people around us.

However, we should not simply accept everything someone tells us because they claim that God told them something about our life.

Their advice should still be tested against Scripture.

Godly counsel will not lead us into something that contradicts God’s Word.

Can God Use Circumstances to Guide Us?

God can also work through circumstances.

There may be times when a door opens or closes, an opportunity appears, or something happens that causes us to reconsider the direction we are taking.

God is completely capable of using circumstances to accomplish His purposes.

At the same time, we should be careful about assuming that every circumstance is a direct message from God.

Something going well does not automatically mean God is telling us to do it, and something going badly does not automatically mean God is telling us to stop.

This is why circumstances should be considered alongside prayer, Scripture and wisdom rather than used on their own.

Does God Speak Audibly?

Yes, God has spoken audibly to people in the Bible.

God spoke to Moses from the burning bush. He called Samuel when Samuel was a young boy, and Jesus spoke to Paul on the road to Damascus.

1 Samuel 3:10 — Samuel Heard God Calling

“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

God was able to speak directly to Samuel, and Samuel heard Him.

God is still able to speak audibly today if He chooses because nothing is impossible for Him.

However, the Bible does not promise that every Christian will hear an audible voice from God.

We should not think that we are failing to hear God simply because we have never heard an audible voice.

God has already given us His written Word, and He has given believers the Holy Spirit.

How Do I Know If a Voice Is From God?

This is one of the most important questions to ask.

There are many voices competing for our attention. We have our own thoughts and emotions, the opinions of other people and the influence of the world around us.

So how do we know whether something is actually from God?

The first test is Scripture.

God will never tell you to do something that He has already told you is wrong.

If a thought encourages you to lie, hurt someone, take revenge, live in sexual immorality, worship something other than God or disobey His commands, you can know that it is not from God.

God does not contradict Himself.

Jesus Said His Sheep Know His Voice

Jesus used the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep to describe the relationship between Himself and His followers.

John 10:27 — “My Sheep Hear My Voice”

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

Jesus says that His sheep hear His voice and follow Him.

This is not necessarily talking about hearing an audible voice.

It points to knowing Jesus and recognising His truth well enough to follow Him.

The more we know God’s Word, the more familiar we become with His character and His ways.

A person who spends time in Scripture will become much better equipped to recognise teachings and ideas that do not belong to God.

God’s Voice Will Never Lead You Into Sin

God may convict us.

He may correct us.

He may ask us to do something difficult.

He may lead us somewhere we would not have chosen for ourselves.

But He will never lead us into sin.

James 1:13 — God Does Not Tempt Us With Evil

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:”

If something we believe we are hearing encourages us to disobey God, we should not follow it.

God’s guidance will always agree with His character and His Word.

Sometimes God’s leading may challenge us, but it will not contradict Him.

Does Hearing God Always Feel Peaceful?

Some Christians believe that if they feel peaceful about something, it must be from God.

Peace can certainly be something God gives us, but we should be careful about making peace our only test.

We can feel peaceful about something that is actually wrong. We can also feel anxious about something God is calling us to do simply because it is outside our comfort zone.

Think about the people in the Bible whom God called to do difficult things. Moses had fears about speaking. Jonah did not want to go where God told him to go. Mary had to accept a calling that would completely change her life.

Following God does not always feel comfortable.

What matters most is whether what we believe God is leading us toward agrees with His Word.

God Can Give Us Peace in Difficult Situations

Although peace should not be our only test for God’s voice, God can absolutely give us peace when we are trusting Him.

Philippians 4:6–7 — The Peace of God

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

God’s peace can guard our hearts and minds even when our circumstances are difficult.

Sometimes we may not know exactly what is going to happen, but we can still know that God is with us.

That kind of peace comes from trusting Him rather than having every question answered.

What If I Am Not Sure Whether God Is Speaking?

If you are unsure, you do not have to rush.

Take it to God in prayer.

Read Scripture.

Ask God for wisdom.

Talk to mature Christians who know the Bible and can give you godly counsel.

Give yourself time to test what you are sensing instead of immediately assuming that every thought is a message from God.

James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

God does not become frustrated when we ask Him for wisdom.

If you genuinely want to follow Him, you can bring your uncertainty to Him.

You can pray honestly and say, “God, I want to hear You. Please help me understand what is from You and what is from me. Give me wisdom and help me recognise Your truth.”

What If God Seems Silent?

There may also be seasons when you feel like God is not speaking at all.

You may pray and feel like nothing is happening. You may read the Bible and wonder why you cannot seem to find the answer you need.

That does not mean God has abandoned you.

Sometimes we expect God to give us an immediate answer when He is actually teaching us to trust Him.

Remember that God’s silence does not mean God’s absence.

You may not hear what you were hoping to hear, but God has already spoken clearly through His Word.

Deuteronomy 31:8 — God Will Not Leave You

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”

God does not leave us simply because we cannot feel His presence.

There will be times when faith means continuing to trust Him even when we do not have the answer yet.

How Can I Become Better at Hearing God?

If you want to become more familiar with God’s voice, start by becoming more familiar with God’s Word.

Spend time reading the Bible rather than only looking for a specific answer to a problem. Learn about Jesus and His character. Pray regularly and be honest with God about what you are feeling. Ask Him for wisdom and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your heart.

Most importantly, obey what God has already shown you.

We sometimes want God to tell us the next ten steps while we have not yet followed the step He has already given us.

If Scripture tells us to forgive someone, love our neighbour, turn away from sin, care for others and trust God, we do not need another special revelation before obeying.

We already know what God has said.

So, Can I Hear God?

Yes, you can hear God, but hearing God does not necessarily mean hearing an audible voice.

God has spoken through His Son, Jesus Christ, and He has given us His written Word. The Holy Spirit works in the lives of believers, helping us understand God’s truth and reminding us of what Jesus taught. God can also use wise people, circumstances and prayer as part of His guidance.

The most important thing is to test everything against Scripture.

If you think God is telling you something, do not be afraid to slow down and ask questions. Open your Bible. Pray about it. Ask God for wisdom. Look at whether what you are sensing agrees with His character and His Word.

Jesus said:

John 10:27 — “My Sheep Hear My Voice”

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”

The goal is not simply to hear a voice.

The goal is to know Jesus so well that we recognise His truth and are willing to follow Him.

God is not trying to make His children confused. He wants us to know Him, trust Him and walk with Him.

If you genuinely want to hear God, start with the place where He has already spoken clearly: His Word.

As you spend time with Him through Scripture and prayer, allow Him to shape your heart, strengthen your faith and teach you to recognise His ways.

And remember, you do not have to be afraid that you will miss God because you did not hear an audible voice.

If you belong to Christ, He knows you, He is with you, and He has given you His Word to guide you.
