Bible Verses For Students
January 19, 2025Bible Verses For Sadness
January 19, 2025Addiction can make people feel trapped.
Whether it’s:
- alcohol
- drugs
- pornography
- gambling
- overeating
- unhealthy habits
- or destructive behaviours
addiction often leaves people feeling:
- ashamed
- powerless
- exhausted
- spiritually distant
But the Bible shows something important:
👉 Struggle is real — but bondage does not have to stay permanent.
God does not ignore people who are struggling.
And addiction is not stronger than God’s power to help, restore, and change someone over time.
⚡ What To Do Right Now
- Stop hiding the struggle
- Bring it honestly to God
- Remove things that keep pulling you back into temptation
- Focus on one day at a time
- Ask God for strength instead of relying only on willpower
👉 Freedom usually happens through consistent surrender, not instant perfection
What the Bible Says About Addiction
The Bible may not always use the modern word “addiction,” but it clearly talks about:
- bondage
- slavery to sin
- lack of self-control
- destructive desires
Scripture repeatedly warns against anything that begins to control a person.
For example:
“I will not be brought under the power of any.” (1 Corinthians 6:12)
👉 God did not create you to be ruled by destructive habits.
The Bible also shows:
👉 change is possible through God’s help.
This does not mean the struggle disappears overnight.
But it does mean:
- healing is possible
- growth is possible
- freedom is possible
through surrender, truth, support, and dependence on God.
How to Fight Addiction Biblically (Practical Steps)
1. Stop hiding the struggle
Addiction grows stronger in secrecy.
Shame often keeps people silent, isolated, and trapped.
What to do:
- Be honest with God
- Confess the struggle
- Reach out to a trusted Christian if needed
- Stop pretending everything is fine
👉 Healing usually begins when honesty begins
2. Stop relying on willpower alone
Many people keep trying to “just be stronger.”
But addiction often exposes deeper:
- pain
- emptiness
- wounds
- unhealthy coping patterns
The Bible teaches:
👉 real strength comes from God.
What to do:
- Pray honestly for strength
- Depend on God daily
- Ask for help instead of fighting everything alone
Philippians 4:13 says:
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
👉 God’s strength matters more than human effort alone
3. Remove what keeps pulling you back
Temptation becomes harder to resist when you constantly stay close to it.
What to do:
- Remove triggers where possible
- Limit access to destructive habits
- Change unhealthy patterns and environments
- Be intentional about what influences your mind
👉 Wisdom means creating distance from what weakens you spiritually
4. Focus on daily surrender, not instant perfection
Many people quit because they expect immediate change.
But growth is often gradual.
What to do:
- Take it one day at a time
- Keep returning to God after setbacks
- Stay consistent even when progress feels slow
👉 A setback does not mean God has given up on you
5. Replace destructive habits with godly ones
Empty space often pulls people back into old behaviours.
What to do:
- Fill your mind with scripture
- Stay connected to God daily
- Build healthier routines
- Spend time around supportive believers
👉 Freedom is not just stopping something destructive — it’s building a different life
