What the Bible Says About Prayer
Throughout the Bible, faithful men and women prayed during every season of life.
They prayed when they were:
- joyful
- afraid
- confused
- thankful
- grieving
- and seeking direction.
Prayer was never limited to emergencies.
It was an ongoing relationship with God.
Philippians 4:6 says:
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
God invites believers to bring every concern to Him because He cares deeply for them.
Pray With Honesty
God already knows what is in our hearts.
He does not require impressive words or long speeches.
Instead, He desires sincerity.
Whether your prayer is filled with praise, questions, gratitude, or tears, you can come before Him honestly.
Prayer strengthens our relationship with God because it helps us depend on Him rather than ourselves.
Jesus Taught His Disciples How to Pray
When Jesus’ disciples asked Him how to pray, He gave them an example often called the Lord’s Prayer.
This prayer teaches believers to:
- honour God
- seek His will
- depend on Him daily
- ask for forgiveness
- forgive others
- and seek His protection.
Rather than being a prayer to repeat without thought, it serves as a model that helps shape our conversations with God.
Jesus Taught Us to Pray Privately
Jesus also taught that prayer should not be done to impress other people.
Instead of praying to be seen by others, He instructed His followers to spend private time with their Heavenly Father.
Matthew 6:6 says:
“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
This does not mean Christians should never pray with others, as the Bible also records believers praying together. Rather, Jesus was teaching that our prayers should come from sincere hearts that seek God instead of human praise.
Immediately after this teaching, Jesus gave His disciples an example of how to pray.
Matthew 6:9–13 says:
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
This prayer is often called the Lord’s Prayer. Rather than giving us words to repeat without thinking, Jesus provided a model that teaches us to:
- honour God first
- seek His will above our own
- depend on Him for our daily needs
- confess our sins
- forgive others
- ask for His protection
- end by praising Him.
👉 The Lord’s Prayer teaches us the priorities that should shape our conversations with God.
Pray According to God’s Will
Prayer is not about convincing God to do what we want.
It is about bringing our desires before Him while trusting His wisdom.
Sometimes God answers immediately.
Other times He answers differently than we expected.
Because God sees the beginning and the end, His answers are always shaped by His perfect knowledge, love, and purposes.
Pray Continually
Prayer is not limited to church services or special occasions.
The Bible encourages believers to remain in regular conversation with God throughout the day.
Whether you are:
- working
- driving
- studying
- caring for your family
- or making important decisions,
you can continually seek God’s guidance and thank Him for His presence.
Prayer Changes Us
Although prayer does not always change our circumstances immediately, it often changes us.
As we spend time with God, He develops:
- faith
- patience
- wisdom
- peace
- and trust.
Prayer draws believers closer to God and helps align their hearts with His will.
