Bible Verses About Changing Yourself For The Better
January 21, 2025Everyone goes through seasons when they need encouragement. There are times when you feel tired, discouraged, uncertain about the future or simply struggling to find the motivation to keep going. Sometimes you need a reminder that God is still with you, even when your circumstances have not changed.
The Bible gives us encouragement that goes much deeper than motivational words. Scripture reminds us that God is faithful, that He gives strength to the weary, that He is near to His people and that difficult circumstances do not mean He has stopped working.
Biblical inspiration is not about pretending that life is easy. It is about finding hope in God when life is difficult and remembering His character when our feelings are changing.
Quick Answer
The Bible encourages us by reminding us that God is faithful, present and able to strengthen us when we are weary. Scripture calls us to put our hope in God, trust Him through difficult circumstances and continue faithfully even when we cannot see what He is doing.
You do not have to pretend that everything is fine to have faith. The Bible contains people who experienced grief, fear, exhaustion, uncertainty and discouragement, yet continued bringing those things to God.
God Gives Strength to the Weary
There are times when we simply feel exhausted. We may be physically tired, emotionally drained or spiritually discouraged.
The Bible does not shame people for being weary. Instead, Scripture reminds us that God gives strength to those who have none left.
Isaiah 40:29–31 — God Gives Strength to the Weary
“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
This passage is a reminder that our strength does not have to come entirely from ourselves.
There will be seasons when you feel like you cannot keep going in your own strength. That is exactly the kind of situation in which learning to depend upon God becomes important.
God Is With You When Life Feels Uncertain
Sometimes what makes a difficult season especially frightening is not knowing what is going to happen next.
God does not always tell us everything that is ahead. However, Scripture repeatedly reminds us that His presence goes with His people.
Joshua 1:9 — Be Strong and Courageous
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua was facing a major responsibility and an uncertain future. God’s encouragement was not simply that everything would be easy. It was that God would be with him.
Sometimes that is the encouragement we need most. We may not know exactly what tomorrow will bring, but we can know that God is not limited by our uncertainty.
Put Your Hope in God
The Bible does not tell us that we will never feel discouraged. In fact, the Psalms contain many honest expressions of sadness, fear and uncertainty.
Psalm 42:11 — Hope in God
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
The psalmist is speaking honestly about how he feels. He is not pretending that everything is fine.
Yet he also speaks truth to himself: “hope thou in God.”
There is something powerful about that pattern. We can acknowledge what we are feeling without allowing our feelings to become the final authority over what we believe.
God Can Work Through Difficult Circumstances
Some of the most difficult seasons of our lives can leave us wondering whether anything good can possibly come from them.
The Bible does not say that everything that happens is good. There are genuinely painful and evil things in this world. But Scripture teaches that God is able to work through circumstances for the good of those who love Him.
Romans 8:28 — God Works for Good
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
This does not mean that everything that happens to us is good. It means that God is able to work even through difficult circumstances and accomplish His purposes.
That can give us hope when we cannot yet see what God is doing.
God Has Not Forgotten You
When life is difficult for a long time, it can become tempting to believe that nothing will ever change. Discouragement can make the present feel like it will be the future forever.
The Bible repeatedly reminds us that God sees beyond the moment we are currently experiencing.
Psalm 31:14–15 — My Times Are in God’s Hands
“But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.
My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.”
We may not know what the future holds, but God does.
Trusting Him does not mean that we know exactly when circumstances will change. It means that we can place our lives in His hands rather than allowing uncertainty to convince us that there is no hope.
God’s Plans Are Bigger Than What We Can See
One verse often quoted when people need encouragement is Jeremiah 29:11.
Jeremiah 29:11 — God’s Promise to His People
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
This verse was spoken to the people of Judah during their exile in Babylon. It was a promise concerning God’s faithfulness to them as a people and His purposes for them beyond their present circumstances.
It should therefore not be treated as a guarantee that every individual Christian will receive a particular earthly outcome or that life will always go according to our plans.
But it does reveal something important about God’s character: His purposes were not defeated by the difficult season His people were experiencing.
That can encourage us to trust God even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.
You Don’t Have to Pretend You Are Always Strong
The Bible contains many people who experienced deep discouragement.
David expressed distress throughout the Psalms. Elijah became exhausted and discouraged. Job experienced devastating loss. Moses became overwhelmed by the responsibility God had given him.
Their struggles did not mean God had abandoned them.
Psalm 34:18 — God Is Near the Brokenhearted
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
God is not only present when we are celebrating. Scripture repeatedly shows Him meeting people in places of weakness and distress.
You can therefore be honest with God about how you feel. You do not have to hide your exhaustion, sadness or uncertainty from Him.
Keep Going Even When You Cannot See the Results
Sometimes inspiration means simply continuing to do what is right when you cannot yet see the outcome.
Galatians 6:9 — Do Not Grow Weary in Doing Good
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
There may be seasons when you feel as though your efforts are producing nothing. You may wonder whether continuing to pray, serve, forgive, obey or persevere is making any difference.
This verse encourages us not to give up simply because we cannot yet see the result.
Faithfulness is still valuable when the outcome is not immediately visible.
God Can Give You Peace in the Middle of the Storm
Sometimes we think we will finally have peace once our circumstances change. But the Bible teaches that God’s peace can meet us while circumstances are still difficult.
Philippians 4:6–7 — Bring Your Worries to God
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Paul does not tell us to pretend that we have nothing to worry about. He tells us to bring our worries to God.
Prayer gives us somewhere to take the things we cannot control. It does not guarantee that every situation will immediately change, but it reminds us that we do not have to carry everything alone.
Remember What God Has Already Done
When we are discouraged, it can be easy to focus entirely on what is wrong now and forget what God has already done.
Throughout Scripture, God’s people were repeatedly encouraged to remember His faithfulness.
Psalm 103:2 — Do Not Forget His Benefits
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”
Remembering God’s faithfulness can strengthen us when our present circumstances feel uncertain.
Think about the ways God has carried you, answered prayers, provided what you needed, brought people into your life, forgiven you and sustained you through difficult seasons.
Remembering does not erase today’s problems, but it can remind us that today’s problems are not the whole story.
Take One Step at a Time
Sometimes discouragement becomes overwhelming because we are trying to solve everything at once.
The Bible teaches us to trust God with tomorrow rather than allowing tomorrow’s uncertainties to consume today.
Matthew 6:34 — Do Not Worry About Tomorrow
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Jesus was not teaching that planning for the future is wrong. He was teaching His followers not to allow tomorrow’s uncertainties to dominate today.
Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is simply take the next right step.
Pray today. Read God’s Word today. Do what is in front of you today. You do not have to solve your entire future before you can move forward.
Read Scripture When You Need Encouragement
When you are discouraged, Scripture gives you something more reliable than temporary motivation.
Your feelings can change from one day to another, but God’s character does not.
Romans 15:4 — Scripture Gives Hope
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
The Bible gives us examples of people who struggled, waited, failed, repented, endured hardship and continued trusting God.
Their stories remind us that difficult seasons are not unusual for God’s people.
Encourage Other People Too
Sometimes one of the best ways to find encouragement is to become an encouragement to someone else.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 — Encourage One Another
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
Someone around you may be struggling without telling anyone. A kind message, prayer, conversation or simple reminder that you care can make a meaningful difference.
Christian encouragement is not about giving people empty promises. It is about pointing them back to truth, reminding them of God’s character and helping them remember that they do not have to face difficult circumstances alone.
What If You Don’t Feel Inspired?
There may be days when you read encouraging Bible verses and still feel discouraged.
That does not mean you have failed spiritually.
Faith is not measured by whether you feel positive every moment. There are times when we continue trusting God while still feeling sad, tired or uncertain.
David could say, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” and still tell his soul to hope in God.
Sometimes encouragement comes quickly. Other times, it comes slowly through prayer, Scripture, rest, wise support and simply taking one faithful step at a time.

Final Thoughts
The Bible gives us something much deeper than temporary inspiration. It gives us hope that is rooted in God Himself.
When you are tired, God can give you strength. When you are uncertain, you can trust Him with what you cannot see. When you are discouraged, you can bring those feelings honestly to Him. When you do not know what the future holds, you can remember that your times are in His hands.
You do not have to pretend that everything is easy. You do not have to feel strong every day. Sometimes faith simply means continuing to trust God and taking the next step even when you cannot see the whole path ahead.
Keep returning to God’s Word. Keep bringing your worries to Him. Remember His faithfulness, and do not assume that the difficult season you are in today will define your entire future.
