Alcohol is mentioned many times throughout the Bible.
Because of this, many Christians ask questions such as:
- Is drinking alcohol a sin?
- Did Jesus drink wine?
- Does the Bible forbid alcohol?
- What about getting drunk?
- Should Christians choose not to drink?
The Bible gives a balanced answer.
It does not forbid the drinking of alcohol altogether, but it strongly condemns drunkenness, addiction, and anything that controls us instead of God.

What the Bible Says About Alcohol
The Bible speaks about alcohol in both positive and negative ways.
Wine was commonly used in biblical times.
For example:
- Jesus turned water into wine at Cana (John 2:1–11)
- Jesus used wine at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:27–29)
- Paul told Timothy to use a little wine for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23)
- wine is described as one of God’s provisions (Psalm 104:14–15).
At the same time, the Bible repeatedly warns against drunkenness and the misuse of alcohol.
Drunkenness Is Sin
While the Bible does not forbid every use of alcohol, it clearly forbids drunkenness.
Ephesians 5:18 says:
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
Drunkenness leads people away from wisdom, self-control, and obedience to God.
Scripture repeatedly warns that those who continually live in drunkenness are living contrary to God’s will (Proverbs 23:29–35; Galatians 5:19–21; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10).
Christians Should Practice Self-Control
One of the fruit of the Spirit is self-control.
God calls believers to remain clear-minded and spiritually alert.
Alcohol should never become something that controls our lives.
First Corinthians 6:12 says:
“All things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
Anything that masters us becomes a spiritual danger.
Consider Other People
The Bible teaches that Christian freedom should always be guided by love.
Even if something is not sinful in itself, believers should consider whether their actions could cause someone else to stumble.
Romans 14:21 says:
“It is good neither to… drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth.”
For some Christians, choosing not to drink may be the most loving decision in certain situations.
Some Christians Choose Total Abstinence
The Bible records several people who completely abstained from alcohol for specific reasons.
For example:
- the Nazirites (Numbers 6:1–4)
- John the Baptist (Luke 1:13–15)
- and others who dedicated themselves to special service.
The Bible honours these choices.
However, it does not command every believer to abstain from alcohol completely.
Wisdom Should Guide Every Decision
The question should not simply be:
“Can I drink?”
A better question is:
“Will this choice glorify God?”
Believers should prayerfully consider:
- whether alcohol will help or hinder their walk with Christ
- whether it could lead them into temptation
- whether it could influence someone else negatively
- and whether it honours God.
Whatever we choose, our desire should be to glorify Him.
How to Respond Biblically (Practical Steps)
1. Seek God’s wisdom
Ask Him to guide your decisions.
What to do:
- Pray regularly
- Read scripture
- Follow God’s wisdom

2. Avoid drunkenness
Remain sober and self-controlled.
What to do:
- Know your limits
- Never pursue intoxication
- Choose self-control
👉 God calls believers to be sober-minded.
3. Think about others
Consider your influence.
What to do:
- Avoid causing others to stumble
- Show love
- Be willing to limit your freedom
👉 Love places others before ourselves.
4. Don’t let anything control you
Keep Christ first.
What to do:
- Guard against addiction
- Depend on the Holy Spirit
- Live wisely
👉 Jesus should be Lord over every area of life.
5. Glorify God in everything
Make every decision for His honour.

- Examine your motives
- Choose what pleases God
- Walk faithfully

The Bible teaches that alcohol itself is not forbidden, but drunkenness is clearly condemned.
Christians are called to exercise wisdom, self-control, and love in every decision they make.
Some believers choose to drink in moderation.
Others choose complete abstinence.
