What Does Sanctification Mean?
September 2, 2025
What are baptism and communion?
September 2, 2025When many people hear the word “church,” they picture a building with a cross on the front, rows of chairs, a pastor preaching, worship music and people gathering together on a Sunday.
But the Bible gives us a much bigger picture of what the church actually is.
The church is not simply a building.
It is not a denomination.
It is not an organisation owned by a particular group of people.
The church is made up of people who belong to Jesus Christ.
This is important because you can walk into a church building without actually being part of the church in the biblical sense. At the same time, a Christian who cannot get to a church building is still part of the body of Christ.
The church is God’s people.
It is people who have put their faith in Jesus, been brought into relationship with God and called to live together as followers of Christ.
Quick Answer: What Is the Church?
The church is the community of people who belong to Jesus Christ.
The New Testament describes believers as the body of Christ, with Jesus as the head. Christians are called to worship God together, encourage one another, care for each other, learn God’s Word, pray, serve, share the gospel and live out their faith.
A church building can be a place where Christians meet, but the building itself is not the church.
The church is the people.
Matthew 18:20 — Jesus Is With His People
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Jesus shows us that His presence is not dependent on a particular building.
Christians can gather in a church building, a home, a hall or somewhere else entirely.
What makes the gathering meaningful is that believers are gathering in His name.
Where Does the Word “Church” Come From?
The word “church” in the New Testament refers to an assembly or gathering of people.
This helps us understand why the church should not simply be thought of as a physical building.
When the early Christians gathered together, they were the church.
They did not need a special building to become God’s people.
They belonged to Christ wherever they gathered.
Acts 2:46–47 — The Early Church Met Together
“And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”
The early Christians met in different places.
They worshipped together, shared meals, prayed and cared for one another.
Their faith was not something they kept completely separate from everyday life.
They lived it together.
Is the Church a Building?
No.
A church building is simply a place where Christians gather.
There is nothing wrong with having a dedicated building for worship, teaching and fellowship, but the building itself is not the church.
The people are.
1 Corinthians 3:16 — God’s Spirit Dwells Among His People
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
Paul was speaking to believers about their identity as God’s people.
The presence of God is not limited to a particular building.
Through the Holy Spirit, God dwells with His people.
This means that Christianity is much bigger than attending a building once a week.
Who Is the Head of the Church?
Jesus Christ is the head of the church.
The church does not ultimately belong to a pastor, priest, denomination, ministry leader or individual congregation.
It belongs to Jesus.
Colossians 1:18 — Christ Is the Head of the Body
“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
This gives us an important perspective.
Church leaders have responsibilities, but they are not the head of the church.
Jesus is.
When a church becomes centred around a particular person rather than Christ, it can easily lose sight of what the church is supposed to be.
What Does It Mean That the Church Is the Body of Christ?
The Bible describes Christians as different parts of one body, with Jesus as the head.
This is a beautiful picture because it shows that Christians are not all supposed to be exactly the same.
We have different personalities, experiences, abilities and spiritual gifts.
Yet we belong to the same body.
1 Corinthians 12:27 — Christians Are the Body of Christ
“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
One person may be gifted at teaching.
Another may be gifted at encouraging people.
Someone else may be gifted at serving behind the scenes.
Another person may have a gift for helping people who are hurting.
The church needs different people using their gifts to serve God and others.
Does Every Christian Have a Place in the Church?
Yes.
The Bible teaches that every believer has a part to play.
You do not have to stand on a stage to be valuable to God.
Some of the most important things Christians do happen quietly.
A person who visits someone who is lonely matters.
Someone who prays faithfully matters.
A person who who cooks a meal for a family going through a difficult time matters.
Someone who teaches children about Jesus matters.
The one who encourages a struggling Christian matters.
God can use all of these things.
1 Corinthians 12:18 — God Places Each Member Where He Wants Them
“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”
You do not have to compare your role with somebody else’s.
God has given different people different gifts and responsibilities.
The important thing is to use what He has given you faithfully.
Why Does the Church Gather Together?
One of the main reasons Christians gather is to worship God together.
But worship is not the only purpose.
The church also exists to teach God’s Word, encourage believers, pray together, serve others, share the gospel and help Christians grow in their relationship with Christ.
Hebrews 10:24–25 — Christians Should Encourage One Another
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Christianity was never intended to be completely isolated.
We need other believers.
Sometimes we need someone to pray for us, we need encouragement.
Sometimes we need someone to tell us the truth when we are going in the wrong direction.
And sometimes other people simply need us to be there for them.
Does a Christian Have to Attend Church?
The Bible strongly encourages Christians to gather together, and regularly meeting with other believers is an important part of Christian life.
However, there are situations where someone may not be able to attend a traditional church service.
A person may be sick, caring for someone, isolated, persecuted, living somewhere without a healthy church, or dealing with circumstances that make attending difficult.
Being unable to attend a church building does not mean that God has rejected someone.
At the same time, Christians should be careful not to use “I don’t need church” as an excuse to completely isolate themselves from other believers.
We were made for Christian community.
What Should a Church Actually Do?
A healthy church should help people know Jesus and grow in their relationship with Him.
It should teach Scripture accurately, encourage believers, care for people who are hurting, serve the community and share the gospel.
Jesus gave His followers the command to make disciples.
Matthew 28:19–20 — The Church Is Called to Make Disciples
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
The church is therefore not simply somewhere we go to hear a sermon.
It is a community of people who are learning to follow Jesus and helping others do the same.
Should the Church Care About People in Need?
Absolutely.
Jesus repeatedly taught His followers to care about people who were struggling.
The church should not only talk about loving people.
It should actually love them.
That includes caring for the poor, helping people who are vulnerable, supporting those who are struggling and showing compassion to people who are hurting.
James 1:27 — Caring for Those in Need
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
James makes it clear that genuine faith should affect the way we treat other people.
Christianity is not simply about what we say we believe.
Our faith should show itself in how we live.
Should Christians Take Care of One Another?
Yes.
The early church shared their lives with one another and helped people who were in need.
Acts 4:32–35 — The Early Christians Cared for One Another
“And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things which were sold,
And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.”
This passage describes an early Christian community that genuinely cared about one another.
It does not mean every Christian throughout history has been commanded to sell everything they own and give it away.
Rather, it shows the kind of love and generosity that should exist among God’s people.
When another Christian is struggling, we should care.
Should Church Leaders Be Served or Serve Others?
Church leadership is meant to be about serving people, not controlling them.
Jesus specifically warned His disciples against the kind of leadership that seeks power over others.
Mark 10:43–45 — Greatness Comes Through Serving
“But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Jesus Himself is the example.
He did not use His position to exploit people.
He served them.
Christian leadership should reflect that same heart.
This does not mean leaders should have no authority or responsibility. Scripture gives church leaders genuine responsibilities. But biblical authority should always be exercised in a way that reflects Christ.
What About Bad Churches or Hypocritical Christians?
This is a very real question.
Many people have been hurt by churches.
Some have experienced hypocrisy, manipulation, abuse, judgement, spiritual control or leaders who did not live according to what they preached.
The Bible does not tell us to pretend these things are acceptable.
Jesus Himself strongly confronted religious hypocrisy.
Matthew 23:27–28 — Jesus Condemned Hypocrisy
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”
Jesus was not afraid to confront religious leaders who looked righteous on the outside while their hearts were far from God.
So if you have been hurt by a church, it is important to understand that the actions of people do not change who Jesus is.
A church can fail.
A pastor can fail.
A Christian can fail.
Jesus does not.
Does a Bad Experience With Church Mean Christianity Is False?
No.
It can certainly make it harder to trust Christians, especially if someone has experienced serious hurt.
But Christianity is ultimately about Jesus, not the perfect behaviour of every person who claims to follow Him.
Christians are still human beings.
We make mistakes.
We sin.
Sometimes we hurt people.
That does not make those actions acceptable, but it does explain why Scripture continually calls Christians to repentance, forgiveness, humility and growth.
Romans 3:23 — Christians Still Need God’s Grace
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
The church is not a gathering of perfect people.
It is a gathering of people who need Jesus.
Is the Church Supposed to Judge Everyone?
Christians are called to use wisdom and discernment, and there are times when the church must confront serious sin.
However, Jesus repeatedly warned His followers against self-righteous and hypocritical judgment.
Matthew 7:3–5 — Examine Yourself First
“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”
The church should be a place where truth matters, but truth should not be separated from humility and love.
We should remember that we also need God’s grace.
What Is the Church’s Relationship With Jesus?
The Bible uses the beautiful picture of the church as the bride of Christ.
This shows how deeply Jesus loves His people.
Ephesians 5:25–27 — Christ Loves the Church
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
Jesus did not come simply to create a religious organisation.
He gave Himself for His people.
The church belongs to Him.
That should change how Christians think about one another.
If Jesus loves His church, we should care about the people He has called us to love.
What Is the Church Supposed to Be Like?
The church should be marked by love.
That does not mean Christians will always agree.
People come from different backgrounds and have different personalities, experiences and opinions.
But love should remain at the centre.
John 13:34–35 — Jesus Commanded His Followers to Love One Another
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
Jesus said that people should be able to recognise His followers by their love.
That is a powerful responsibility.
The church should be a place where people experience truth, but also compassion.
It should be a place where people are encouraged to grow, not crushed when they fall.
It should be a place where people can find community, prayer, support and a deeper understanding of God.
Does the Church Exist to Make People Comfortable?
The church should certainly be a place where hurting people can find compassion and encouragement.
But its purpose is not simply to make everyone comfortable.
Following Jesus sometimes means being challenged.
God’s Word sometimes confronts attitudes and behaviours that need to change.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 — Scripture Teaches and Corrects Us
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
A healthy church should not be afraid of biblical truth.
But biblical truth should be communicated with the same grace and love that Jesus showed.
We need both.
Does the Church Have a Mission?
Yes.
Jesus gave His followers a mission to take the gospel into the world.
Acts 1:8 — Christians Are Called to Be Witnesses
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
The church is not meant to turn inward and only care about itself.
Christians are called to share the good news about Jesus.
That can happen through preaching, conversations, missions, serving others, personal testimony, acts of kindness and many other ways.
What Does the Church Have to Do With Your Purpose?
The church can be an important place where Christians discover and use the gifts God has given them.
God has created each person with different abilities and opportunities to serve.
1 Peter 4:10 — Use Your Gifts to Serve Others
“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
Your gift is not only for your own benefit.
God can use what He has given you to bless someone else.
Maybe you are good at encouraging people, or teaching, maybe you are compassionate, good at helping or have a creative gift.
Maybe you have a creative gift that can be used to communicate the gospel.
There are many ways to serve God.
Does the Church Have to Look the Same Everywhere?
No.
Churches can look very different from one another.
They may worship differently, have different styles of music, meet in different kinds of buildings and have different traditions.
Christians also come from many different cultures and backgrounds.
What matters is that a church remains faithful to Jesus and His Word.
Revelation 7:9 — God’s People Come From Every Nation
“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;”
God’s people are not limited to one culture or nation.
The church is much bigger than any individual congregation.
What Is the Church Really?
The church is people.
It is people who belong to Jesus Christ.
It is people from different backgrounds, cultures, personalities and experiences who have been brought together through faith in Him.
The church is not perfect because the people in it are not perfect.
There will be disagreements, mistakes and be times when people who claim to represent Jesus behave in ways that do not reflect Him at all.
But that does not change what the church is supposed to be.
The church is supposed to point people toward Jesus.
It is supposed to teach God’s Word, encourage believers, care for people who are hurting, serve those in need, share the gospel and help Christians grow.
Most importantly, the church belongs to Christ.
Ephesians 2:19–22 — Believers Are Part of God’s Household
“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”
That is what the church really is.
It is God’s people being built together in Christ.
You do not have to be perfect before you can belong or have everything figured out.
You do not have to know every answer.
The church is made up of people who need Jesus.
And as we follow Him together, we are called to love one another, carry one another through difficult seasons, use the gifts God has given us and point each other back to Him.
The church is not ultimately about a building.
It is not about a denomination, a particular pastor.
It is about Jesus and the people who belong to Him.
Colossians 1:17–18 — Jesus Is Above All
“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
When we remember that Jesus is the head of the church, everything else falls into its proper place.
The building is not the most important thing.
The denomination is not the most important thing.
The pastor is not the most important thing.
We are not the most important thing.
Jesus is.
And the church exists to know Him, worship Him, follow Him and make Him known.ip God, grow together, and serve the world.
