Why Doesn’t God Answer My Prayers?
September 1, 2025
Does God Hear Everyone’s Prayers?
September 1, 2025Have you ever sat down to pray and suddenly realised you have no idea what to say?
Maybe your heart is hurting, your mind is overwhelmed, or there is so much going on that you cannot even put your feelings into words. Sometimes you may want to pray, but all you can manage is silence, tears or a simple, “God, please help me.”
If that has happened to you, please know that you are not doing prayer wrong.
You do not have to find the perfect words before you can come to God. He already knows what is happening in your heart, and He understands what you are trying to say even when you cannot explain it yourself.
Prayer is not a performance where God is judging how well you speak. It is coming before your Father honestly and spending time with Him.
God Already Knows What Is in Your Heart
One of the most comforting things about prayer is that God already knows what you are carrying before you say anything.
You do not have to explain every detail to Him because He already knows your thoughts, your fears, your pain and the things you need.
Isaiah 65:24 — God Hears Before We Call
“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”
That does not mean we do not need to pray.
It means we can come to God without worrying that we need to explain ourselves perfectly. He already understands.
Sometimes the only words you can manage are, “God, I need You.”
That is enough to begin.
You Do Not Need Perfect Words to Pray
Some people become nervous about prayer because they think they need to know exactly what to say.
You do not.
God is not looking for impressive vocabulary or a perfectly structured prayer. He wants an honest heart.
You can speak to Him in ordinary language. You can tell Him what is happening, what you are afraid of, what you need and what you do not understand.
You can even tell Him that you do not know how to pray.
That is still prayer.
Psalm 62:8 — Pour Out Your Heart to God
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
Notice that Scripture says to pour out your heart.
It does not say to make your prayer sound impressive.
God wants you to come as you are.
The Holy Spirit Helps Us When We Do Not Know What to Pray
There are times when our emotions are so strong that we genuinely do not know what to ask God for.
Maybe you are dealing with grief.
Maybe you are frightened about something that is happening in your life.
Maybe you are facing a decision and have no idea what the right choice is.
Maybe you are simply exhausted and cannot find the words.
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us in those moments.
Romans 8:26 — The Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
This is such an encouraging verse because God knows that there will be times when we are weak.
He does not expect us to always know exactly what to pray.
The Holy Spirit helps us.
Your tears can become part of your prayer.
Your silence can become part of your prayer.
Even when you can only sigh and sit quietly before God, He understands what is happening inside you.
You Can Use the Lord’s Prayer When You Do Not Know What to Say
Jesus gave His disciples a model for prayer.
If you are completely stuck and do not know where to begin, you can use the prayer Jesus taught His followers as a guide.
Matthew 6:9–13 — The Lord’s Prayer
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Jesus gave us a beautiful pattern here.
We can begin by focusing on who God is. We can ask for His will, bring our needs to Him, ask for forgiveness, seek His help with temptation and trust Him for protection.
You do not have to repeat these exact words every time you pray.
Instead, let them give you somewhere to begin.
You Can Pray Scripture
Another wonderful way to pray when you cannot find your own words is to pray the words of Scripture.
The Psalms are especially helpful because they contain prayers of praise, fear, grief, anger, repentance, hope and trust.
There are Psalms for almost every season of life.
When you find a verse that expresses what you are feeling, you can simply bring those words before God.
For example, if you are feeling afraid, you might pray:
Psalm 56:3 — When I Am Afraid, I Will Trust in You
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
You can turn that verse into your own prayer:
“God, I am afraid right now, but I choose to trust You. Please help me remember that You are with me.”
You are not required to invent beautiful words.
Sometimes Scripture gives us the words we need.
You Can Tell God Exactly How You Feel
God already knows how you feel, so you do not need to hide it from Him.
If you are angry, tell Him.
If you are sad, tell Him.
If you are confused, tell Him.
If you are disappointed, tell Him.
If you are grateful, tell Him.
The Psalms show us that God’s people have always brought honest emotions before Him.
David cried out to God when he was afraid, overwhelmed and discouraged. He did not pretend everything was fine when it was not.
That gives us permission to be honest with God too.
Psalm 34:17–18 — God Is Near to the Brokenhearted
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
You can cry out to God.
You do not have to hide your brokenness from Him.
You Can Keep Your Prayer Simple
Sometimes we make prayer harder than it needs to be.
If you do not know what to say, start with something simple.
You could pray:
“God, I don’t know what to say, but I need You.”
Or:
“Father, please help me understand what to do.”
Or:
“Jesus, I am hurting and I need You to help me through this.”
There is nothing wrong with a short prayer.
You do not have to pray for twenty minutes every time you speak to God. A short, sincere prayer is still a prayer.
At other times, you may find that once you begin talking to God, everything you have been holding inside starts to come out.
Both are okay.
You Can Sit Quietly Before God
Prayer does not always have to mean talking.
There may be times when you simply need to sit quietly before God.
You might not have any words.
You may be crying.
You may feel completely exhausted.
You can simply sit there and know that you are in God’s presence.
However, it is important to remember that Christian prayer is not about trying to empty your mind or waiting for a mysterious voice to speak. We come before God, bring our hearts to Him and allow His Word to guide us.
Sometimes silence simply gives us the opportunity to stop rushing and remember that God is with us.
Psalm 46:10 — Be Still and Know
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
You do not always have to fill the silence with words.
Sometimes you simply need to be still before God.
You Can Write Your Prayer Down
If speaking feels difficult, try writing.
You can take a notebook and write exactly what you would say to God if you were speaking to Him.
It does not have to be neat.
It does not have to be organised.
You can write down everything that is on your mind.
You might even begin with:
“God, I don’t know how to pray about this, but this is what is happening…”
Then simply keep writing.
Writing your thoughts down can help you slow down and recognise what you are actually feeling. It can also become a record of your prayers that you can look back on later and see how God has worked in your life.
Prayer Is About Relationship, Not Performance
This is perhaps the most important thing to remember.
Prayer is not a performance.
God is not sitting there judging whether you used the right words.
He is your Father, and He wants you to come to Him.
Jesus warned against treating prayer like a performance for other people.
Matthew 6:6 — Pray to Your Father
“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”
Prayer is personal.
It is about you and God.
You do not need an audience.
You do not need impressive words.
You simply need to come to Him.
God Cares About What You Are Carrying
If you are struggling to pray because you are carrying anxiety, fear or stress, remember that God wants you to bring those things to Him.
You were never meant to carry everything by yourself.
1 Peter 5:7 — Cast Your Cares on God
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
God cares about what is happening in your life.
He cares about the things that keep you awake at night.
He cares about the things you are worried about.
He cares about the things you do not know how to fix.
You can bring them to Him.
What If All I Can Do Is Cry?
There may be moments when you sit down to pray and immediately start crying.
Please do not think that means you have failed at prayer.
Sometimes your tears are expressing something that words cannot.
God sees them.
Psalm 56:8 — God Sees Our Tears
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
God is not indifferent to your pain.
He sees you.
He knows what those tears mean even when you cannot explain them.
You can sit with Him in that moment.
You can cry.
You can whisper His name.
You can simply say, “Jesus, help me.”
And then rest in the knowledge that He understands.
What If I Do Not Know What God’s Will Is?
Sometimes the reason we do not know what to pray is because we are unsure what God wants us to do.
Maybe you are facing a major decision.
Maybe you are asking God whether you should stay, leave, wait, move forward or change direction.
You can ask God for wisdom.
James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
You do not need to know the answer before you pray.
You can simply ask God to give you wisdom and help you recognise the right path.
Then continue seeking Him through Scripture, wise counsel and prayer.
You Can Pray Even When You Feel Far From God
Sometimes we struggle to pray because we feel like God is far away.
Maybe you have sinned.
Maybe you have been away from Him for a long time.
Maybe you feel ashamed and do not know how to come back.
But you do not need to hide from God.
Come back.
Confess what you need to confess.
Ask for forgiveness.
Talk to Him honestly.
1 John 1:9 — God Forgives Those Who Confess
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God does not ask you to pretend that you have not sinned.
He asks you to come into the light.
You can begin with a very simple prayer:
“God, I have messed up. Please forgive me and help me come back to You.”
What If I Do Not Feel Anything When I Pray?
Not every prayer will come with a powerful emotional experience.
Sometimes you will feel close to God.
Other times you may feel nothing at all.
Your feelings are not the measure of whether God is present.
God’s presence and faithfulness do not depend on how you feel on a particular day.
There will be times when prayer feels easy and times when it feels like work. Continue seeking Him even in those quieter seasons.
Hebrews 13:5 — God Will Not Leave You
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
You may not always feel God’s presence, but you can trust His promise.
So How Do I Pray When I Don’t Know What to Say?
If you are sitting there right now and you genuinely do not know what to say, do not overthink it.
Start with the truth.
“God, I don’t know what to say.”
Then tell Him what is actually happening.
“I am scared.”
“I am hurting.”
“I am confused.”
“I am angry.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I need You.”
You can ask Him for help, wisdom, forgiveness, strength or peace.
You can pray Scripture when you cannot find your own words.
You can use the Lord’s Prayer as a guide.
You can write your prayer down.
You can sit quietly before Him.
And if all you can do is cry, remember that God understands what your heart is saying even when you cannot put it into words.
Romans 8:26 — God Helps Us When We Are Weak
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
You do not need the perfect prayer.
You do not need to know exactly what to say.
You just need to come.
God already knows what is in your heart, and He is not waiting for you to become good enough or eloquent enough before He will listen.
Bring Him your messy thoughts.
Bring Him your tears.
Bring Him your questions.
Bring Him your fears.
Bring Him your gratitude.
Bring Him everything.
Prayer is simply coming to God honestly and trusting that He cares.
And sometimes the most honest prayer you can pray is simply:
“God, I don’t know what to say, but I’m here. I need You.”
