How Many Books Are In The Bible
June 5, 2024Where To Get A Free Bible
June 14, 2024This is a question many people ask when reading the Bible:
👉 Did God allow multiple wives?
Why did some men in the Bible have more than one wife?
Is polygamy sinful?
What does scripture actually teach about marriage?
When people read about men like:
- Abraham
- Jacob
- David
- and Solomon
having multiple wives,
it can seem confusing.
But it’s important to understand:
👉 the Bible sometimes records behaviour without approving it.
So let’s look carefully at what scripture actually teaches.
⚡ The Clear Answer
👉 The Bible records men having multiple wives, but it does not present this as God’s ideal design for marriage.
From the beginning,
the biblical pattern for marriage is:
- one man
- and one woman
joined together in covenant.
The Bible repeatedly shows that having multiple wives often led to:
- jealousy
- conflict
- division
- heartbreak
- and spiritual problems.
The clearest biblical teaching about marriage comes from:
- Genesis
- the teachings of Jesus
- and the New Testament.
God’s Original Design for Marriage
The foundation for biblical marriage begins in Genesis.
Genesis 2:24 says:
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Notice:
- “wife”
not - “wives.”
God created:
- Adam
- and Eve
not multiple wives for Adam.
👉 This establishes the original design for marriage.
Why the Bible Records Multiple Wives
Some people assume:
- if the Bible records something,
then God approved of it.
But scripture also records:
- sin
- failure
- violence
- idolatry
- and disobedience
without approving those actions.
The Bible honestly records human behaviour —
including flawed decisions made by imperfect people.
Problems Caused by Multiple Wives in the Bible
Again and again,
the Bible shows painful consequences connected to polygamy.
Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar
Conflict developed between:
- Sarah
- and Hagar
leading to:
- jealousy
- hurt
- and family division.
Jacob’s Family
Jacob’s marriages created:
- rivalry
- competition
- jealousy
- and tension within the household.
Solomon
Solomon had many wives,
and scripture says they eventually:
👉 turned his heart away from God.
1 Kings 11:4 says:
“His wives turned away his heart after other gods…”
This became a major spiritual downfall in Solomon’s life.
What Jesus Said About Marriage
When Jesus taught about marriage,
He pointed back to creation.
Matthew 19:4–6 says:
“He which made them at the beginning made them male and female…”
Jesus then repeats the Genesis teaching about:
- two becoming one flesh.
Again, the pattern is:
👉 one man and one woman.
Jesus points believers back to God’s original design.
What the New Testament Teaches
The New Testament consistently presents marriage in singular terms.
Ephesians 5:31 says:
“They two shall be one flesh.”
The New Testament also describes church leaders as:
1 Timothy 3:2
“The husband of one wife…”
The overall New Testament pattern strongly supports:
👉 faithful monogamous marriage.
Why Did God Allow It in the Old Testament?
This is where many people struggle.
The Bible shows that God sometimes allowed certain practices because of:
- human sinfulness
- cultural conditions
- and hardened hearts
without those things being His perfect design.
Jesus explained something similar regarding divorce in Matthew 19.
God often worked through imperfect people and imperfect situations —
but that does not mean every action reflected His ideal will.
Does the Bible Ever Command Multiple Wives?
No.
The Bible records polygamy,
but it never commands believers to have multiple wives.
Instead,
when scripture clearly teaches about marriage,
the consistent pattern points toward:
👉 covenant faithfulness between one husband and one wife.
What Marriage Is Meant to Reflect
Biblical marriage is about more than:
- legal structure
- culture
- or personal desire.
Marriage is meant to reflect:
- covenant
- faithfulness
- unity
- sacrifice
- and love.
Ephesians 5 compares marriage to:
👉 Christ’s relationship with the church.
This reflects:
- devotion
- faithfulness
- and covenant love.
Christians Should Approach This Topic With Wisdom
This topic can become:
- emotional
- cultural
- and personal.
Some people come from:
- cultures where polygamy exists
- complicated family backgrounds
- or difficult situations.
Christians should approach this topic with:
- biblical truth
- humility
- compassion
- and wisdom.
Not:
- mockery
- pride
- or harsh judgment.
Final Thought
The Bible does record men having multiple wives.
But when scripture is viewed as a whole,
the clearest biblical pattern is:
👉 one man and one woman joined together in covenant marriage.
From:
- Genesis
- to Jesus’ teachings
- to the New Testament
the Bible consistently points back to God’s original design.
The stories involving multiple wives often reveal:
- conflict
- division
- emotional pain
- and spiritual consequences.
This reminds believers:
👉 not everything recorded in the Bible is meant to be copied.
God’s design for marriage reflects:
- faithfulness
- unity
- commitment
- and covenant love.
And ultimately,
biblical marriage points people toward:
👉 God’s faithful relationship with His people.
