Bible Verses About Gossip
August 1, 2024Bible Verses About Discernment
August 1, 2024The Bible repeatedly warns believers about false teachers.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, God cautions His people against those who twist His Word, spread false doctrine, and lead others away from the truth.
False teachers may appear:
- sincere
- convincing
- knowledgeable
- charismatic
- or even religious.
However, appearances alone are not enough.
The Bible instructs believers to test every teaching against God’s Word rather than accepting it simply because it sounds appealing.
👉 Truth is found in God’s Word, not in human opinions.
⚡ What To Do Right Now
- Read the Bible regularly
- Test every teaching against scripture
- Pray for wisdom and discernment
- Learn sound biblical doctrine
- Stay connected with faithful, Bible-teaching believers
👉 Knowing God’s truth is the best defence against deception.
What the Bible Says About False Teachers
False teachers have existed throughout history.
Some intentionally deceive people.
Others sincerely teach error because they do not understand God’s Word correctly.
Whatever their motives, false teaching can lead people away from the Gospel and distort the truth about God.
Jesus warned His followers:
Matthew 7:15 says:
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
This warning reminds believers that false teachers often appear trustworthy on the outside while spreading harmful doctrine.
False Teaching Twists God’s Word
One of the primary characteristics of false teachers is that they distort scripture.
Rather than submitting to God’s Word, they reshape it to support their own ideas, desires, or agendas.
Second Peter 3:16 warns that some people twist the scriptures to their own destruction.
For this reason, believers should always read the Bible carefully and consider passages within their proper context.
Test Every Teaching
The Bible never encourages blind acceptance of spiritual teaching.
Instead, believers are instructed to examine everything carefully.
Acts 17:11 praises the Bereans because they searched the scriptures daily to determine whether what they were hearing was true.
This example teaches us that every sermon, book, podcast, video, or Bible study should be measured against God’s Word.
Scripture—not human opinion—is the final authority.
False Teachers Often Appeal to Human Desires
False teaching frequently becomes popular because it tells people what they want to hear.
Rather than calling people to repentance and obedience, some teachers promise:
- prosperity
- comfort
- success
- or self-fulfilment
while ignoring the Bible’s teaching about holiness, repentance, and following Christ.
The Gospel calls people to trust Jesus, deny themselves, and faithfully follow Him.
Discernment Protects Believers
God has not left His people defenceless.
Through the Holy Spirit and the truth of scripture, believers can recognise teachings that do not align with God’s Word.
Discernment grows as Christians:
- study the Bible
- pray for wisdom
- remain humble
- and continue growing in spiritual maturity.
The better we know God’s truth, the easier it becomes to recognise error.
Love the Truth
Avoiding false teaching is not only about identifying error.
It also involves developing a deep love for God’s truth.
As believers grow in their understanding of scripture, they become more firmly established in their faith and less likely to be led astray by deceptive teaching.
