Bible Verses About Depression
August 6, 2024Bible Verses About Idols
August 13, 2024The Ten Commandments are among the most well-known passages in the Bible.
Given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, these commandments formed the foundation of Israel’s covenant with God and revealed His standards for holy living.
Even today, many people ask:
- What are the Ten Commandments?
- Do Christians still follow them?
- Why did God give them?
- What can we learn from them today?
The Bible teaches that the Ten Commandments reveal God’s holy character and show people how to love God and love others.
👉 They remind us that God is perfectly holy and that we all need His grace.
⚡ What To Do Right Now
- Read the Ten Commandments carefully
- Ask God to reveal areas where you need to grow
- Thank Jesus for providing forgiveness through the cross
- Seek to obey God out of love, not merely obligation
- Remember that salvation comes through faith in Christ, not by keeping the law
👉 God’s commands are given for our good and His glory.
What Are the Ten Commandments?
The Ten Commandments were given by God to Moses after the Israelites were rescued from slavery in Egypt.
They are recorded in Exodus 20 and repeated in Deuteronomy 5.
The commandments teach people how to honour God and how to treat one another.
They include instructions such as:
- Worship God alone.
- Do not make idols.
- Do not misuse God’s name.
- Remember the Sabbath.
- Honour your father and mother.
- Do not murder.
- Do not commit adultery.
- Do not steal.
- Do not bear false witness.
- Do not covet.
These commandments reveal God’s standards of righteousness and provide guidance for living in a way that honours Him.
Why Did God Give the Ten Commandments?
God did not give the commandments to earn salvation.
Instead, they revealed His holiness and showed His people how to live as those who belonged to Him.
The law also exposes humanity’s need for a Saviour.
Romans 3:20 says:
“By the law is the knowledge of sin.”
The commandments show us that no one keeps God’s standards perfectly.
Rather than leading us to pride, they point us toward Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law perfectly on our behalf.
Jesus Summarised the Commandments
When Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest, He summarized the entire law with two commands.
Matthew 22:37–39 says:
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart… Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Jesus explained that every commandment ultimately points back to these two great principles:
- Love God.
- Love others.
When believers genuinely love God, obedience naturally follows.
Can Anyone Keep the Commandments Perfectly?
The honest answer is no.
Every person has sinned and fallen short of God’s perfect standard.
Whether through:
- lying
- selfishness
- anger
- pride
- envy
- or other sins,
everyone has broken God’s law.
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
This is why the Gospel is such good news.
Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live and offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins.
Obedience Is the Result of Love
Some people think Christianity is simply about following rules.
The Bible presents something much deeper.
Christians obey God because they love Him.
Jesus said:
John 14:15 says:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Obedience is not a way of earning God’s acceptance.
It is a response to the grace believers have already received through Christ.
God’s Grace Does Not Cancel Holiness
Because salvation is by grace through faith, some people assume obedience no longer matters.
The Bible teaches otherwise.
God’s grace forgives sin, but it also transforms lives.
As believers grow in their relationship with Christ, they increasingly desire to obey His Word.
Obedience becomes the fruit of a changed heart rather than an attempt to earn salvation.
