God’s purpose for our lives is rooted in love, service, and a deep relationship with Him. Let’s look at what Scripture teaches about discovering His plan and how to follow it with confidence and joy.

God Wants Us to Love Him

The first step in knowing what God wants you to do is to love Him fully. Jesus said in Mark 12:30:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

God’s greatest desire is for you to have a personal relationship with Him—built on love, trust, and surrender. When you put God at the center of your life, His will becomes clearer, and His peace begins to guide your steps.

And one of the ways we show our love for Him is in how we treat others.

God Wants Us to Love Others

Right after commanding us to love God, Jesus added:

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)

Loving others isn’t just about being nice—it’s about reflecting God’s love to the world. When you serve, encourage, and care for people, you are living out God’s will in tangible ways.

That love flows naturally when we follow Jesus’ example.

God Wants Us to Follow Jesus

When Jesus called His disciples, He said:

“Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)

To follow Jesus means more than believing in Him—it means living as He lived, walking in obedience, and letting His teachings shape your daily life. Following Jesus isn’t always easy, but it is the clearest path to discovering God’s plan.

And as we follow Him, we’re called to share what we’ve received.

God Wants Us to Share the Good News

Jesus gave us the Great Commission:

“Go and make disciples of all nations … teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19–20)

Sharing the gospel doesn’t always mean traveling across the world. It can mean telling a friend about Jesus, encouraging your family with Scripture, or living in such a way that others see God’s love through you.

This outward focus continues through acts of service.

God Wants Us to Serve

Jesus modeled a life of service:

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)

When you serve—whether by helping a neighbor, supporting a friend, or volunteering—you reflect the heart of Christ. Service is not about recognition; it’s about becoming God’s hands and feet in a hurting world.

And as we serve, God also calls us to keep growing.

God Wants Us to Grow in Faith

Spiritual growth is central to God’s will. Romans 12:2 says:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Through prayer, Bible study, worship, and fellowship, your faith deepens. Growth doesn’t happen all at once, but step by step God transforms your heart and equips you for His purposes.

Part of that growth also means being a good steward of what He’s entrusted to you.

God Wants Us to Be Good Stewards

1 Peter 4:10 tells us:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Your time, talents, and resources are gifts from God. He calls you to use them wisely—for His glory and the good of others. Stewardship is not about what we lack, but about honoring God with what we already have.

And even when the path feels uncertain, He calls us to trust Him.

God Wants Us to Trust His Plan

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Sometimes God’s will doesn’t make sense in the moment. Life can feel confusing, and answers don’t always come quickly. But when we trust God, He promises to guide our steps. His plan is always good, even when we can’t see the full picture yet.

Embracing His Will for You

If you’ve been asking, “What does God want me to do?” the answer begins with loving Him, loving others, following Jesus, serving, growing in faith, stewarding your gifts, and trusting His plan.

You may not always know every detail of the future, but you can trust God to guide you one step at a time. When you align your life with His will, you’ll find the peace, purpose, and joy He created you for.

God Wants Us to Use Our Talents to Glorify Him

Every gift and ability you have comes from Him—and He gave them to you for a purpose.

1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Your talents—whether in art, teaching, music, hospitality, leadership, or any other skill—are opportunities to reflect God’s character and point others back to Him. He doesn’t waste what He has placed in you; instead, He calls you to use those gifts in ways that bless others and magnify His name.

When you use your talents for God’s glory, even the smallest act becomes an act of worship. Whether it’s singing in church, encouraging a friend with words, or running a business with integrity, your unique abilities can shine God’s light into the world.

The Bible teaches:
God created people intentionally and with meaning.

Jeremiah 29:11 says:

Ephesians 2:10 says believers are:

“created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”

This means:

• your life is not random
• God has intentions for how you live
• and believers are called to live for Him

The Bible also shows:
purpose is connected to obedience and relationship with God.

Many people search for purpose only through:

• success
• relationships
• achievements
• or personal goals

But scripture teaches:
true purpose begins with God.

What Purpose Does NOT Mean

Many people misunderstand purpose.

Purpose does not mean:

• becoming famous
• constantly feeling fulfilled
• having every detail of life figured out
• or receiving a dramatic calling immediately

The Bible shows that many faithful people:

• lived ordinary lives
• served faithfully in small ways
• and followed God step by step

Purpose is often found through:

• faithfulness
• obedience
• consistency
• and spiritual growth

God often reveals direction gradually over time.

How to Discover Purpose Biblically (Practical Steps)

1. Focus on knowing God first

Many people chase purpose while ignoring relationship with God.

But scripture teaches:
purpose begins with Him.

What to do:

• Pray consistently
• Read scripture regularly
• Spend time growing spiritually

John 17:3 says:

“This is life eternal, that they might know thee…”

Knowing God is foundational to purpose

2. Stop waiting for a perfect plan before acting

Some people feel stuck because they want complete clarity first.

But the Bible often shows God guiding people gradually.

What to do:

• Take faithful steps where you are now
• Use the opportunities already in front of you
• Stay obedient in small things

Movement often brings clarity

3. Use the gifts God has given you

God gives people different:

• abilities
• strengths
• opportunities
• and ways to serve others

What to do:

• Ask:
  • “How can I serve God and others with what I already have?”
• Stop dismissing your abilities
• Use your gifts faithfully

Purpose often involves serving others

4. Stop comparing your journey to others

Comparison creates:

• discouragement
• insecurity
• envy
• and confusion

• Focus on your own walk with God
• Stop measuring purpose by social media or success
• Trust God’s timing for your life

God’s plan for your life may look different from someone else’s

5. Stay faithful during unclear seasons

There are seasons where purpose feels unclear.

But uncertainty does not mean God abandoned you.

What to do:

• Continue praying
• Keep growing spiritually
• Stay faithful even during waiting seasons

Final Thought

Purpose is not about:

• becoming perfect
• having every answer
• or building the “perfect” life

It is about:

• knowing God
• walking faithfully with Him
• serving others
• and living according to His truth

There may be seasons where you feel:

• uncertain
• overlooked
• confused
• or discouraged

But scripture reminds believers:
your life still matters to God.

You do not need to:

• compare yourself constantly
• force every answer
• or figure out your entire future overnight

You need to:

• stay close to God
• trust Him daily
• continue growing spiritually
• and keep taking faithful steps forward

Over time, something begins to happen.

Direction becomes clearer
Confidence grows
Faith deepens
Your understanding of purpose matures

And instead of constantly feeling lost…
you begin learning how to walk intentionally with God.
